lookin killer Jody! Man I thought my plugs are a PITA to change!, how do you turbo guys change plugs on them things? those pipes are sweeet.
they're not as bad as they look, and a lot easier than my Lightning was!!!!!! Added the drivers fender, Ron Davis custom radiator (they matched the mounts Mark had built for my original radiator), and the intercooler. I painted the intercooler the same dark gray as the engine compartment as it really shows through the front grille. I know some think that's a no-no, but should be fine for this car.

Beautiful work Jody ! Great colors with a ton of high tech and a splash of carbon accent - georgous. Can't imagine how tired you must be right now especially after all the sanding and buffing - so take care of yourself. We're all living the build right along side you (except for that walking around exhausted part) - THANKS for sharing and looking forward to S and D days !!!

thanks Steve, and everyone else for the nice comments. Neatly detailed and organized doesn't really cost anything but time, so this is something everyone can do to their car. I will say, as the turbo plumbing and the rest of the front end stuff gets added, it's becoming harder and harder to keep it organized and un-cluttered. I'm running out of room.............. :willy:

Great to see the progress on the car Jody. Just don't let jackass get you all riled up. You may have to have a back road shootout of your own on Power Tour with him, and he wouldn't like losing the best looking award let alone the cool car and fast car award either. Then again, he's usually just making up for something anyway, isn't he? Hmm.... I should stop. I gotta start collecting pictures of my own progress on my own car to get my own thread going.

well, both front fenders are on, and wired the front clip. Only thing left to wire is the a/c switch, horns, and front park/turn signals. Need more progress before these can be done. I converted to HID's since I had a kit in the shop and the car came with H4 halogen drop-out bulbs.

The plumbing is progressing; water and oil to turbo lines are done as well as all vacuum/wastegate plumbing. Things are starting to get crowded.

Jody -
What amazes me most about your car is how you have taken 10lbs of "stuff", put it in a 5 lb bag and still make it look incredibly clean. I am sure looking up from down below is a maze, but from top down, you have pulled off a miracle.
You are going to have to publish your own 3 Volume Service Manual for that thing!!

Don't forget about the radiator hoses! ;) Your IC has one in and one out right? That should be a little easier than 2 in & 2 out like you had planned for the Camaro.
Are the A/C lines already fabbed up?
Keep up the pace, you'll make it!

well, I started on the intercooler, air inlet, and radiator tubing today. Fabbed up the inlet first. Everything is just tacked as I have a guy who can copy my tacked together pieces and make it a one piece tube.

finished the intercooler to throttle body tubing (made it 2 piece as you cannot remove it as one piece), both radiator hoses, and the air inlets for both turbos. All that's left is the (2) turbo to intercooler lines, merging into one inlet; this will be the hardest part, so I saved it for last.............
Once finished I'll take all the individual lines I made and have them copied in stainless or steel as one-piece units, so no weld lines.

I ordered some Ring Brothers 1/4", 5/16", and 3/8" bolts/washers for the front sheetmetal stuff in the engine compartment, along with the hood hinges and latches. These look incredible..............
They're only $7.40 each, which is cheap considering the machining involved, and the fact that you only need 15-20 for the average car.
I liked the button head stainless bolts and washers I had on there.

OK, just picked up the piping after it was finish welded by a friend of mine, Warren at Midnight Performance in Rancho Cordova. I do all my dynoing at his shop. I originally built these pieces with the intention of having them copied in single pieces, but the compound angle and short distances between bends wouldn't allow most of them to be done as a single piece. That meant welding up what I had; since I can't operate my tig worth a darn I opted to let him weld them up for me.
The hardest piece was the crossover tube from the passenger side, merging with the drivers side into the intercooler inlet. I bought a merge collector and fitted the pieces up. Lots of cutting and really special angles..............

Here's the rest of the tubing. I'm going to final fit everything tonight and weld bracing brackets to a couple of the tubes that need it. Tomorrow they're off to the powdercoaters for titanium exhaust coating.

Hooked up the throttle this morning. I own a tig, but can't weld with it................... so I bought a Lokar cable mount and built a bracket to attach it to the fuel rail support. Turned out nice. got my front support panel back from the painter (thanks Jim!!!) so now the front end can be finished. Added some Marquez Design hood stops (these are very nice!), finished off most of my Ring Bros. bolts, and fitted the front grille and trim. Only thing left is the bumper, and I'll need a helper for that.
As a side note, you Camaro guys don't know how good you have it with the reproduction parts. The 64 Chevelle stuff is in many cases horrible; quality is crap, very disappointing. All I can get though.

Jody,
Car looks great. Just last night I dug out the old PHRs with the Malitude builds just to remember what it was like before. You changed the few things I didn't really like about the first version, like color, wheels, and spindles.
Speakin' of, could we get some pics of the front wheels with the Vintage Wheel Works, AFX spindles, and Touring Classics brakes? I have the spindles and brakes but really want to make sure the V40s will fit. Maybe an angle that shows the caliper clearance to the backside of the spokes? If you happen to know the wheel specs I would be interested in that as well even though I know what I need for my 1st gen. I think.
Things seem to be moving along well. Keep up the great work.

theres about 3/8" clearance between the outside of the calipers and the wheel. About 1/8" between the front upper edge of the calipers and the face of the wheel. I think these are 4.75" b.s., but not positive.

I gotta ask one question though (and I'm guessing you've been asking this 100 times before)... no question the build is awesome, and no question that the car was awesome in it's first iteration and it will be awesome in its second... but why start with a car like Mark's, and go from there? It would seem that it would have been a cheaper endeavor to start from scratch?
Not trying to be disrespectful... just plain curious as hell.

a fair question, and I'd guess you're right on the cost factor. I did not intend to do most of the things I've done. I was only going to re-paint the car when I bought it. Then I had a new FAST efi in my shop, and I was unimpressed with the Electromotive setup, so no big deal, let's swap it. To get the harness out required dropping the trans down and removing most the under dash wiring, so why not strip it and do the paint right. Then, as the car is stripped I'm looking at a 402 twin turbo LS2 engine I have sitting on a stand, and start thinking "why not"...................
Do you see where this is going??!!!!!! :faint: Now I'm in full runaway mode, buying different wheels, changing the color since I'm not a huge fan of red anyway, completely powdercoating and re-painting everything on the car; replacing almost all the trim (even though it was in good condition) because it wasn't "perfect".
I did keep 95% of his suspension, and kept his trans, dash, and steering column........... I'm not sure where I went wrong, but now thousands and thousands of dollars later, here I am.

Ain't that how we all do it.
We start with a minor adjustment, taking a few parts off and from there it just is snowballing.
Not that many do it in a short time as you have. For most guys it is a multiyear deal.
One remarkable thing with this years Power Tour is that both you and Scott will drive your own cars. That must be a first.

air cleaners showed up, and got the breather tanks mounted. I had some nice tanks Mark built that bolted in the wheelwells, but they didn't clear the new air filter location, so I bought some Stefs aluminum breather tanks and mounted them in the area next to the air filters. I drilled and tapped the valley cover on the LS2 behind the intake and ran two #10 lines to the tanks. That's pretty hidden, and is a baffled area of the engine, so there shouldn't be a lot of oil pushed up. I ordered some different breather caps from the tank with a nipple fitting on them, and ran a line from there to the air filter base. This way there will be no smoke or oil smell when the engine is running. I did this before on other cars, and was reminded by Charley, as I think they did this also recently to the Red Witch.
The coils just showed up, so I'm going to see if my mounting idea will work, right after I finish up the trans lines.

forgot to post where the oil filter ended up. That last pic didn't work as the front bumper brace interfered. So it ended up being bolted to that brace. Clears the tire easily, up behind the bumper, not hanging down at all.

fastened the intake down after the breathers were finished (had to move the manifold to get to the rear breather ends). Hooked up the fuel line, added 5 gallons of gas to the tank, and set the fuel pressure to 55 psi. Best part, no leaks!
Now I'm on to building some brackets to mount the coils.

working on mounting the coils today. You'd think it would be easy to find a place to put them, but it's not, at least not for me.................
First I made some spacers, and with some 1/4" all-thread I got the four coils for each side as compact as they possibly could be. Thanks to Tony (Nineball) for this idea, saw it on his red 69 Camaro.
http://www.camcojb.com/temp/malitude 624.jpg
For you Camaro and Chevelle guys you can use the above setup and build simple brackets and bolt them to the back of the heads. They're virtually hidden and pretty simple to do. But on my car the engine has been set back further than normal; Mark had modded the frame pads to slide the engine an addition 1.5" or so, and this makes the passenger head very close to the firewall. I wanted to keep this setback, so the rear of the heads was out. The problem from here was trying to get them in the same area on each side. Originally I wanted to put them in the wheelwells, but Chevelles don't have wheelwells........... :D They're so small you'd have to remove the the wheelwells to put them on or do any work on them. One the drivers side you could build a bracket to bolt to the side of the block to mount them; not on the passenger side, starter is in the way. On the passenger side they could be mounted to the front crossmember, no way on the drivers side. No frame room either side, etc. So this is what I came up with.
http://www.camcojb.com/temp/malitude 621.jpg
http://www.camcojb.com/temp/malitude 625.jpg
http://www.camcojb.com/temp/malitude 626.jpg
Added some braces and it's very solid. It's tucked up high out of the way of water, debris, etc. and still has plenty of room to get the wires and harnesses in there. Now on to the drivers side; similar deal but will need to be spaced a bit further out to clear the oil lines.

I don't think the tire will turn that far to have the water hitting that area; definitely not driving down the road. I guess if your oil pan and starter gets wet in the rain then this would too, but I don't remember mine having that issue.

not sure it helps here.. but i had a simmilar issue on an electromotive injected car i did a few years back and the problem ended up being an ECU undervoltage issue when cranking.. so try and do a test with an additional batt close to the starter
we solved it with a small lead batt next to the ecu and a diode to prevent it supplying current back into the main circuit.. but still accept the charge when the alt was at 13.5V
just 2 cents that might come in handy

good idea, but I had the charger on the car. Voltage never dropped below 12.5 volts when cranking. Cranking voltage is an issue with efi though, good thing to know.

One of the obvious things that it shouldn't be but has happened to a few.
Do you have the right box for the engine?
You know they changed the crankwheel to 58 tooth on the LS2. If you have the old box that is set up for 24 tooth you can get the problem you have.

actually, I thought the same, but that's not true. The early LS2's were still 24X reluctor, which is what my 05 is. I do have the correct box, crank sensor, and just tried a new sensor, no luck. I have one last check, to see if the wire from the crank sensor back to the ecm has continuity, and if I can see any kind of a voltage coming in. Then, I'll have to send this back to Meaney, and I have no doubt he'll tell me it's fine...............

well, it's fired up now.................. :woot: A ton of thanks to John Meaney of BigStuff 3, as there's no way it would have been fixed without his help. I had loaned the computer to a friend of mine who is a BigStuff dealer, and he had changed config settings in a hidden dealer-only menu that we cannot see. John was nice enough to tell me how to get into it, and once I saw all the settings I knew what the issue was. Changed them back to LS stuff, and it fired right up.
Needs tuning, pretty fat, but at least it's running, and sounds good. Glad to know that I didn't do something wrong, but really glad to know it's fixed.

ok, not much as far as pics, but things are progressing. After the hidden config issue inb the BigStuff 3 that Mr. Meaney helped me solve, I then ran into an issue with the map sensor not reading correctly. I'd show 15" of vacuum and the computer showed 3-4", so the tuning was screwed up. I bought a new 2-bar map sensor and installed it, same thing. So I started thinking there was something in the computer.
Again, John to the rescue. He confirmed that I did not have the correct map sensor. I went to the dealer and bought a third one from a part number from John, everythings perfect. What's the odds of getting two incorrect sensors in a row? Don't know, but Malitude is living up to it's reputation................
Here's proof it's running, notice the nice gold color the headers are now. I'll be able to drive it once my new SC&C uca's arrive; needed them as I can't get enough camber with the Hotchkis arms because of the proximity of the downpipe to the control arms.

Solved another issue. I thought the dipstick was going to be a major pita, as there is no hole in the pan for it, and the hole in the block has been tapped and threaded. I ordered a Lokar ED-5008 LS1 flexible dipstick tube, and with some creative tweaking to the support bracket it works great. The o-ring still fit snug in the hole, and I added a bit of clear silicone just in case. I love the Lokar engine and trans dipsticks as they allow you to move them where they fit for you.

the intercooler is 3.5" in and out, but I couldn't fit anything larger than 3". I may have someone who knows more than me look at it later to see if there's a better way to do it. It has 2" coming out of the turbos, merging to a 3" into the intercooler, and 3" from the intercooler to the throttle body.

I know how you feel. I spent a lot of late nights trying to figure out the same thing. Almost gave up a few times. The intercooling was the hardest part of all the plumbing on my car. My turbos are 2.5". I went with two intercoolers with 2.5" in/out and merged them at the throttle. I still felt like I compromised some of the airflow.
Hey,Yeah, are you going to take it to any local car shows?

well, after aligning the car ran into a huge snag; the front wheels will not work. I used a 17X8" with the largest bs they offered at 4.75" but it's a no-go with the 245/45 tire. This combo works great on a Camaro, but not the early Chevelle.
So I once again called Frank at Prodigy/GP Superstore and he just happened to have a set of wheels with the proper offsets to work with the car. I'll post pics once I have them on the car. the mistake was that Mark Stielow had used a 17x8" with 5.25" bs and the wheels I bought offered a max of 4.75". I swapped to AFX spindles that got .300" or so back, but I was still 1/4" or so further out, and it flat won't work. The tires are rubbing at 15 degrees of wheel turn, which isn't much, even with 1 degree of camber....

Jody, A couple months back I bought a Cannon "S5" by far my most favorite camera ever. It has all kinds of accessorys and it can even convert your images that you took to black & white which my wife loves when she takes pics of the kids.

If you're looking for a small point a click I can't say enough about the:
CANON PowerShot I currently have a SD630.
I've had 6 of these now between work and home (me, wife, employees, etc.) I like 'em.
