well, changed the iso setting and the camera is fine for me now. Took a couple of pics of the Recaro drivers seat; still waiting on the passenger bracket. This was the first thing in a long while that bolted on without mods, amazing. :faint:
I had Shawn Katt with Gearhead Garage recover them to match the rear seat. At the time we were doing an old-school look so I had him remove the headrests, but after Power Tour I'm going to have them put back on.
Thanks again to Terry at Griffin Motorwerke for the brackets (also where I bought the seats). Something fit...............

you're just looking at the pics, huh??!!! :) They are Recaros, aftermarket seats. They had headrests which we removed for the theme of the car at the time; that of course changed and the headrests are going back on.
Thanks!

well, finished up the a/c lines the other day, and replaced my Hotchkis uca's with some from Mark at SC&C. Needed Marks as I had no room for camber adjustment with the downtubes from the turbos. Nice stuff, did a quick alignment and will finalize when the wheels and tires arrive Wednesday.

Is there a crossbrace on that upper control arm that hits the bumper at full drop? Just asking because I had a similar set on a 1st gen F and I had to relocate bumpers to work.
Car looks sharp. Put small front and rear headrests it will look stock and save your neck in rearended.
Could not be coming together any better, well done, i look forward to viewing your updates.

no interference on this one, but I think Mark had modded the frame area for clearance before I got it.
The headrests are going back on after Power Tour.

I think he's referring to the bump stop for the uca at full suspension droop.
I believe that the SPC's don't have any provisions for the bump stops.
Btw the build is simply bad@$$. Can't wait for the wheels to get there so we all can see it completed. I know alot of us are following this build closely and are just as anxious as you LOL.

I used the bumpstops off the Hotchkis arms; they bolt under the ball joint, worked great.
Thanks for the nice words!

Did you crimp all the a/c line ends yourself? This is something I have to do and my local parts store doesn't do it anymore.

yes, I was able to borrow a tool to crimp them, so I cut them to length and crimped them myself.

tires and wheels showed up today. Let me just publicly thank Frank from GP Superstore and Scott from Forgeline; both went out of their way to take care of me, excellent communication throughout. It was a pleasure.
Here's a couple pics. I will take some nicer outside pics probably tomorrow, I need to re-do the alignment before taking it for a spin.
Here's the first wheel/tire mounted with the original wheel/tire combo up front.

I think the more modern version makes the car mor badass.
I don't like that they are black. I think a more gunmetal color would look much better.
Time was an issue and you got a set of wheels in record time.
After power tour you should play with photoshop and try a gunmetal color on them.

I agree 96z28ss, they would definately look better with a gunmetal grey center. The wheels are bad ass though. The other ones looked really good too if they would have worked. Two totally different looks.

Obviously in the minority here but I agree w/ these guys. The black to polished contrast on the spokes seems a bit out of place w/ the color of the car. No doubt they are badass wheels, but I think a slightly lighter spoked center would make them that much better.
Kick ass. Power Tour, here we come.

Looks Killer:thumbsup: , It's great that Frank and Forgeline came through for you...but it is also good for them. Your build is way up there in terms of quality and history. So what wheel company would not jump at the chance. Congrats on such a killer car. You really have taken a cool car to the next level. It is no longer the car that Stielow built but rather the car that Jody built! I love the new version (But the old version was killer too).

Well, I love it just the way it is. I really like the way the taller 19 is filling the rear wheel well. I never really thought 18s were tall enough on those cars with those big ole wheel wells. I believe it could be lower also.
The sizes look right to me, and the color works just fine. Problem with the gunmetal center is if you miss by a few shades it realy looks like you screwed up!
The big question is, what does Jody think?

I think you can sum this car up with one word: stunning!
The paint is stunning.
The engine is stunning.
The wheels are stunning.
The car is Stunning!
I hate to say it, but the only thing that needs updating, and it's only because you have gone so far with the car, is the interior.

I think you guys nailed it! I think the black wheel centers will play well off the black interior once it's on the ground. Agree that the rear needs to come down a little more... but the diamond edge detail in the wheels matches well with the high level of detail in every other area of the car. Just need a "Steven Rupp/lighted interior/shot from a ladder" pic to bring it all together in one visual...
btw I think the car should be nicknamed "Cialis" for obvious reasons!

Jody,
I wanted to say thank you for choosing the new wheel style for this project.
It really is a beautiful car and all your hard work and passion shows.
We are proud to be the wheel of choice for such a high profile car.
Please keep us updated on how things progress with the car and I am sure we will be seeing a lot more Mali2ude this summer.
Let me know if there is anything at all we can do for you.
It's been a pleasure working with you and Frank.

thanks guys. Yes the car is doing the entire Tour, but I did run into a snag. The front of the car has to come up; not because of crossmember or exhaust clearance which is the normal deal to encounter, have plenty of that. It's the friggin trans pan.
At the current ride height it's only 3.5" max off the ground. By far the lowest thing on the car by inches, it ;looks like it's going to be a real problem. Thing is I'm not sure how it got this way............... :goofy:
I had a deep aluminum pan that was nearly 5" deep, but I removed that for a shallow pan. This one is 3.3" deep and the stock steel pan is just over 3" deep, so 1/4" deeper at most. The rear crossmember did have to be moved forward in the car slightly but it stayed at exactly the same ride height. I swappwed the lower control arms to Hotchkis ones from stock when they came out, but with the shims in place they are exactly the same ride height as stock lowers according to the guy at Hotchkis I spoke with this morning. The new 18" tires might be 1/4" shorter or so, but this pan is way close to the ground. I don't think lifting the front a full inch would get me over the speed bumps we have in this state, and I don't remember this car having any ground clearance issues at all when Charley had it, but I need to call him.
I do remember the trans pan looked like it had been drug all over a concrete floor, so maybe that wasn't what happened, it was actually bottoming out on speed bumps, etc.

well, just spoke with Mark Stielow and he reminded me that the AFX spindles lower the car an inch or more, so there's where the ride height deal came from. I'm going to order some new springs and get the front end up a bit, and see where we stand.
Jody

Yep, going from B-spindles to AFX spindles lowered my car 5/8" in the front with no other changes, I would expect yours changed the same amount as we made the exact same swap.
Is there any provision for spring spacers in the Hotchkis lower arms? For my GW arms a few years ago I machined aluminum spacers to fit between the spring nest and the urethane spring isolator. A 1/2" spacer will bring the front ride height up 1"... if you can do it it would be cheaper & easier than getting new springs and having them powdercoated.

they have their shims in there, which gets it back to a stock lca height. I ordered some bb springs as they're only a bit stiffer (580#/in vs 500#/in) and are taller so I can get them where they need to be. That's tomorrows project along with a complete re-alignment.

lots of responses, thanks to all. I got the car back from Jim in paint the end of February and it's been a thrash since then. I honestly thought it could be done even faster, but there's a ton of things that have to be done to put them together. I pulled this thing apart in a day or two, but assembly is a lot slower.
As fun (and frustrating at times) as this was I am very glad it's at the end of this journey. Got about a week to do the tune and fix any issues that may show up once I start driving. Hopefully this thing will quit fighting me now..................... :D
This build with the updates in a thread was a blast, and your comments and posts helped me a lot along the way. I definitely appreciate it and may have another build thread going in the not so distant future.

unfortunately it has to come up some. It's too bad, the tires clear fine and the exhaust is not an issue as is often the case. The damned trans pan is an issue, and I'd like a bit more clearance.

well, it's not looking good for Power Tour, as this damned car is fighting and screaming till the very end. As soon as I solve one issue two more crop up. I think I'll run out of time.
Right now, no speedo and related, no trans shifting. VSS issue I'd guess, but not sure how to solve it yet. Then as it was idling all of a sudden both pipes started smoking a lot. My guess, oil from the turbo drains backing up or just too much oil period. I have a ported pump on this thing and about 45 psi at idle, maybe it's just too much. The drain lines are 5/8" i.d. and are kink-free downhill to the pan. It's run this long before and never done this, but of course it starts now. I have the proper oil restrictor fittings Precision supplied with the turbos, so I dunno........... :(
Haven't driven it more than 200 ft without some major issue cropping up like my valve covers melting.............. which of course caused a massive oil leak that drenched everything. Not the fault of the covers, I'm going to run the same ones on another LS build, just not on a turbo car with the headers right next to the covers. :D Everybody with them on normal motors have not had any issues, great pieces.
So as you see, I've got several big things to sort out, and honestly I'm burnt out on this car. It will get sorted, but I really set my goal of one month for teething pains; one week may not be enough.

Jody I've had this issue with Precision turbos before. After sending the turbo back 3 times to get new seals, Pat and Harry both said just start the car and get into as much boost as you can right away. The turbo seals were just not seating like they should, and had smoke out the tailpipe. I setup the anti-lag and twostep in the ecu, started the car rev'd to 5000rpm and 20psi, they didn't smoke a lick after that. But cleaning out the exhaust was a PITA!!!
Hope you get the car sorted out and stay positive we're all behind you!!!

Jody if it was easy everyone would have bad ass cars. Some cars go smooth as silk and some fight the whole way.
Just a thought but what is the Id in the #10 fitting connected to the turbo. Some company make pretty small bore on the fitting which restricts flow alot.
Just a thought.
Don't give up, you have come way to far. When you make the Power Tour it well all be worth it.

Hope you get the car sorted out and stay positive we're all behind you!!!
that's possible, but will be a real pain in the ass since I don't have the car tuned and it doesn't want to upshift........... . It's real embarrassing driving around smoking like this. I just tried to lower the shift points as I logged the trans controller and it has a mph signal, just won't upshift so some other table must be over-riding it.

When you make the Power Tour it well all be worth it.
these are XRP pushlocks, which are actually bigger than standard braided in the same size. A #10 pushlock is a real 10/16 (5/8") id whereas in an it's smaller.
I had a return pump stop pumping on my GTO and I thought I'd blown the motor up......... :faint: And it is a real pain in the ass to get the oil out of the exhaust if this is what is happening.

jody, do not plug the speedo into the pcs speedo wire until all other parameters are tuned.
make sure you got tps, low thru high signal, and 12 volts to controller, as well as rpm and your good to go, leave speedo un hooked until the end.
i take it the computer is picking up the controller in the program, try putting it in manual mode and paddle shift up and down thru the gears. also the tranny solenoids should be humming when key is turned on

the tcm has a mph signal. I used the speedo signal out for the speedometer, so maybe the speedo just needs a re-cal. Gonna be tough to un-hook the speedo I think..............
The paddle shifter has no affect. Steve gave me a couple things to look at, but if I can't get the smoke under control it's not gonna happen. That was all I needed at this point............

well, the trans is shifting now. Thanks to Steve (Twist Machine) for telling me about scaling the tps voltage. Hadn't done that, but now it works. Speedo still doesn't read, and the paddle shifter doesn't respond, but at least the car is moving.
It's raining here today, but I went out anyway................ figured the car has been screwing with me, doesn't deserve to stay dry and clean. It's officially wiped out now, so I don't have to worry about it any more. :faint:
Good things
car drives nice as far as ride and handling. Quiet inside, comfy ride, firm but not stiff at all. Trans shifts nice.
Bad things
smoking fairly bad at idle/low speeds, seems to not do it at a higher cruise. It's not an engine problem, this was run in the GTO and was flawless. Pulled some plugs, perfectly clean. It appears the oil is getting past the turbos, and I'm sure the exhaust is full of it now. This happened on the GTO and I had to remove the entire exhaust and stand it up on end to drain it for 24 hours. Can't really get into any appreciable boost with the wet roads to see if it helps seat the oil rings/seals in the turbos.
BAD rear end howl on decel at lower speeds. Completely quiet at a steady cruise or accelerating, but obnoxious slowing down. Wish I would have drove the car before tearing it down a couple years ago, would have definitely had the rear section reset correctly or fixed, whichever the case.
So now it looks even less like Power Tour will happen, as these are big issues. I can live with the rear end noise, but the smoking is a no-go if I can't get it to stop. I'll be calling Precision on Monday.

well, you're just a bundle of good news.............. I narrowed it down to the drivers side by removing the pipes at the downpipes. The drain looks okay and downhill, but I disconnected it from the pan and had a bucket underneath and started the engine. No more smoke, drainage looks good out of the hose. So now it's either got a restriction/blockage at the pan, or it's not quite downhill at the pan.
I'll be back............... :unibrow:

here's the drivers side, which is having the problem. #10 pushlock (5/8" i.d.) with a mandrel 90 hose end off the turbo and a 45 degree mandrel hose end at the pan. The passenger side is identical and has no smoke.

If I disconnect the drivers fitting at the pan and let the oil drain into a pan it pretty much doesn't smoke; a little, but I'm thinking that's oil in the downpipe. I can't leave it running more than a minute or so as it drains the engine oil pretty fast. As soon as I hook the fitting back up it smokes quite a bit more, but then again, I can also let it run longer, exhaust gets hotter, etc.

what are you using for PCV? Because if you have too much crankcase pressure that could be pressurizing the turbos and/or fighting the oil drain causing the oil to back up in the lines and leak past. Its happened to me before

I have two #10 breather lines to remote tanks. The tanks have breather caps with a 5/8" line to the air filters so any smoke will get pulled back in. I checked those lines already, no oil in the tanks at all yet.
This started happening at idle, so there shouldn't be any pressure to deal with anyway. I've yet to see any boost with this engine in this car, but it was broken in in my GTO, ran great, no problems.

what changed between now and then? intake? anything else?

nothing changed when it started to smoke. I've had the car running with this exact combo of parts for a couple weeks. It was sitting outside the shop, idling, charging the a/c. All of a sudden I noticed the smoke from the pipe, started completely without warning while idling. The engine sounded exactly the same.
When the other guy mentioned the no boost deal and the oil seal on the turbos it made me think; all the running had just been idling, tweaking the start, etc. while waiting for the wheels so I could drive the car. So it had been doing a lot of idling, but then again the engine has a few hundred miles on it as a boosted deal from my GTO, and was pretty much broken in, never smoked (other than when the scavenge pump for the turbos failed........... :faint: ). So since it wasn't a virgin start I wasn't too worried about letting it idle while I tweaked things.
It only smokes on one side. I just filled the tank and since the rain stopped I went out and tortured it a bit. Definitely got into boost several times in high gear to load it good. The smoking is not visible cruising down the road, at least I couldn't see it, and after a few miles I returned home. I let it idle for about 30 seconds before putting it in the shop and it had started to smoke again, albeit about half as much as before, noticeably less. So maybe the driving and loading the engine/turbo's is helping, but I just have a gut feeling there's something wrong with the one turbo oil seal. That cannot be fixed before Power Tour.

I had been thinking it was a seal before, but as I'm not the most knowledgeable in this area, I didn't want to say much. Could you have Precision ship out a new turbo to your beginning destination and get some guys to thrash install it before leaving? Just an idea. Oh, and since when does anyone need a working speedometer anyway? Especially on Power Tour.

I wouldn't mind, if I KNEW that the turbo was the issue. I suspect it is, but don't want to commit the money and effort to ship the car 2000 miles and find out that doesn't fix it.................. :willy:
The speedo may just need the calibration done. When I find an area with mile markers I'm going to try it.

Jody-
I was looking at your pics & trying to figure out if the drains were working against the bottom of the sump (however, they look like they go to the front end sides of the pan)- might they be backing up against oil in the sump? If so, would it be possible to put a check valve inline (uphill) on each return line?
I know it's a pain, but I'd do a 'weep' check on the hot side before removing it. I've found bad seals by running a Q-tip in the area where the oil will puddle inside the turbine housing. This could eliminate your drain system from being at fault.

I think the drains are fine. I spoke with a friend who is pretty much a guru on turboed LSX's (thanks Kurt Urban!!!!!!!!), and he thinks it's too much oil pressure at idle causing the issue. Often it's only one turbo that exhibits it and he used restrictors in the oil feed line to get the pressure at the turbo in the 5-9 psi range. Still plenty of oil, but eliminates the oiling issue at idle, which is where mine seems to be.
I guess as the turbos spool they naturally direct oil down the drain lines, but at idle they aren't moving fast enough to do that and can easily back up in the turbo itself and push oil past the seal. There is no liquid oil coming out the downpipe, so it's pretty minor. And it does not appear to smoke at all cruising down the road, only at idle. It just doesn't take much oil in a hot exhaust pipe to get smoke though...........

I was thinking the same thing (pressure too high), even with restrictors... but I figured PT had that worked out for ya when they were on the Goat. We've had to use regulators on some uphill setups before (prior to the catridge). Anyway to slip one in there?

completely different turbo setup in the GTO; that kit had it's own regulated oil pressure log, no problems.

Jody if it's smoking a little less it might be the residual oil in the exhaust and not from the turbo anymore. Did you just run it at idle with the down pipe unhooked? I pounded on my turbo to get it to stop smoking. I bet I did 10 WOT runs through 4 gears just to make sure. :unibrow:
I've also had a few turbo's that didn't like a -4 oil feed line, they liked the -3 better another suggestion from Harry.

well, I'm heading out there in a bit to see what size the restriction is in their fittings. I know they're set up for #4 lines, and I even called them before plumbing the car to verify, but they said #4 is fine. I have heard that #3 solves a lot of issues.
I have some restrictors from another turbo project, and was curious what size they were, and measure the ones in there currently; .062" seems to be the most popular size used on this type and size of turbo to stop the idle oiling issues.

the stock inlet fittings from Precision are .040" restrictors. That's already smaller than what most people use. I do have a set of .035" restrictors from a GT ball-bearing turbo setup I had on another car, tempted to give them a try.

well, didn't stop it, but seemed to make it take longer till it happens. I'm thinking I have an issue with this turbo. It's fine running down the road and under acceleration. Got home, no smoke, but I let it idle for 30 seconds or so and it was back.
Oh, and I picked up an exhaust leak with the wot stuff...............
Gonna take a break, and let it cool off. I'll pull all the plugs just to make sure it's not an engine problem, and see if I can find the new leak. Sounds like a header gasket, and I'm using those felt-type 2000 degree gaskets.

well, barring a miracle from Precision Turbo on Tuesday the car ain't gonna make Power Tour this year. http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sign/sign0181.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net) I just finished pulling the turbo, no obvious signs of oil leakage. But it's positively coming from that turbo somehow, as the plugs are spotless, there is no other way to get oil into that pipe.
I've had e-mails suggesting to just not idle for any period of time, but on Power Tour you might have 1-2 hours of idling/slow moving to get into a particular venue. So your cooling system better be up to task, and the car better not smoke...........

They're aware of this thread and how high exposure the car is, but they don't stock that particular turbo. They'd have to build another and it's a 3 day turn around. Jody would have to have the car on the trailer Friday to get it to Memphis (where we're meeting) in time for the Power Tour and there's just not enough time.

It is still time to change to a N/A spare engine. If I was closer you could have borrowed mine. It has been around your garage before, right ;)
With all the great people here there must be one that has an LS1 or LS2 laying around that could quickly be trashed in to your car. Might not be pretty but you could still make the tour.
Come on lets help Jody get the car running.
Jan
thanks Jan, but a n/a LS would require complete re-doing my exhaust also, which isn't something I want to do at this point. I've got a 550 rwhp LS2 sitting in the shop if that was the case, belongs to a friend who would likely let me use it.

Are you borrowing a turbo off of the mule?
I hate that your thrash has to end this way, but it is not over until it is over. I would assume you would not over night the turbo back, ship the car out and put it back on when you got there? Or does it need more tuning and shaking down.

yes, it's finished, but the turbo is on it's way back to Precision to be fixed. The Chevelle will not be on the Tour unfortunately, they cannot get it repaired in time.

i was just about to ask about jackass or whatever. you should do a update on that thing (do you even really post pics of those cars during construction)? im glad X is going on it. i'll see them all when you guys make it to lincoln. sucks the malibu won't make it, but in the end, you will be happy you didn't rush it all. i did that with my chevelle and fought problems for 2 years. (i suck at repair, but you get the point). can't wait to see the cars for sure tho! just hope the rain stops here. im thinking about selling my cars and buying a boat its so freakin wet in Nebraska.

Did you see that 427-side oiler Ford with the side drafts and supercharger that fit under the hood on Mecom that had the rocket engine mounted to the rear axle? It was pretty cool with all the fuel tanks for the rocket engine in the trunk!

thanks Dan. I've been dinking around tieing up loose ends waiting to leave for Power Tour. I re-routed the breather and fuel lines, swapped valve covers, and got the paddle shifter to work. I knew it was a wiring issue, since I'd wired the car............:P Steve at Twist Machine was very helpful in figuring out what was happening (or not happening). Turned out that it was a simple weatherpack terminal that had not been seated properly and had pushed out when I connected it, causing no voltage to the controller for the manual mode. Simple fix, works great now.
Can't wait to get back from Power Tour, turbo should be back by then, and I can start driving the car. I'll post up more final pics when I get the turbo installed.

they said the oil ring/seal showed "wear". He was also going to do a mod to the housing to help oil drainage at idle.
Not sure how it had wear after 10 miles of driving or so, but seemed happy with how I had everything set up.

Hey Jody any new updates? Pics, video, something?
well, actually a few things have happened. I pulled the centers of the wheels and had them powdercoated a different color; looks much like I initially wanted the car to look, very happy. Also the turbo showed up today (Saturday) which was a surprise, so I just finished re-installing it.
I swapped to new rear end gears (same 3.50 ratio) to cure a loud whine on decel. I also finally located a stock 4L80E trans pan and gained more ground clearance, so that's been done.
All I'm waiting on is to have my ps pump returned from Synister; I sent it back before Power Tour as it's leaked since new; I don't have anything back yet, so the car is ready to drive but I can't due to the missing pump.............
I'll post up some good pics of the new look in wheels, and finalized photos when I get it moving next week hopefully. And I'll be buying a new video camera to make a couple videos.

Jody I had the same thing happen to a 74GTS. And that turbo was new and only ran for 3-5 minutes. Once they changes the ring I pounded it with boost and she never leaked again!
Can't wait to see the video of her running down the road...
