Default Brake Decision

Help me decide.

I am trying to decide on brakes for my 67 nova project and I am in a rut. I previously have taken the car to the dragstrip on open track days, put some slicks on and see what she can do. Now I am building more of a PT ride but would still like to have the ability to take it to the track to stomp on it.

If I go with big brakes there is no way I will be bolting on a set of slicks on 15" wheels. I don't go to the track that often, but would like to still put up some good times.

Do I just go will the big brakes and try to find some good tires to fit my 18" cruising wheels?

Am I trying to have the best of both worlds?

Depending on which brakes you go with, generally the rears aren't as big as the front and you might be able to clear them with a 16 or 17" wheel. You should be able to find a set of cheap 16's or 17's to mount some slicks on. I know you can get 16" slicks, however the 17's you might have to go with a M/T E.T. street or something similar. If the brakes are to big for those then your probably stuck with just the stickiest street tire you can find. I havn't bought slicks in a while, so they very well may make them for 17's, 18's etc etc. Good luck.

We can set you up with 11", 12", 13" or 14" fronts, (depending on what you want and front wheels size) and 12.2" rears that will clear 15" wheels when you run your slicks. We have a set up from Wilwood that has enough rotor offset in the rear that it does not interfere with 15" wheels. Perfect for your situation!

Check with us over at GPSuperStore.com and do a Wilwood request.

Thanks for the feedback. I had no idea the stickies where made in larger wheel sizes.

I guess I forgot to ask one part of the question will 18" wheels look stupid with only 11" or 12" rotors behind them? The reason for big wheels is to clear the big brakes, but obviously I am doing it for style. Opinions no matter how harsh are welcome.

Here are 13" rear rotors inside an 18" wheel. Just for fun I included my front setup with 14" on the front. IMO any smaller than 12" would not look right with an 18" wheel, but I don't have any pics handy to look at one.

Thanks for the photos. Gives me an idea of what it would look like.
