Default Electric Stepper Motor Gauge Question

After reading the Autometer article, I figured I'd ask a question that has been bouncing around in my head for a while.

We have replaced a lot of stepper motors in GM gauges over the years, and we have a supply of them on the shelf for future use. I have an '86 K10 that I will be swapping an LS into, and other than 90-91 Suburban & Blazer cluster/aftermarket gauges there isn't much of a way to get the speedometer to work while also sending a signal to the computer. I've thought it'd be need if I could disassemble the speedometer and mount a stepper motor, then wire it to the speedometer output but I don't know if I'd have to have a separate module to control it...

Does anyone know if/how a stepper motor could be retrofitted into an older gauge?
