Default Sneak Peak! Chevelle Chassis



Hey all, just wanted to give everyone a little teaser for our new ExtReme Chevelle chassis! Our test bed 69 GTO is moving along, pics coming soon. For now, here's a quick snap shot of the 3D model.

As you can see the front suspension consists of the same front clip that is found on our Camaro subframes and sports all of the ExtReme advantages of the best geometry on the market right now. On top of that and unique to A body frames is our proven again and again famous Torque Arm rear suspension. Folks like Mary Pozzi and Ron Sutton have praised this set up as a fantastic all around suspension that cruises comfortably and down right performs on both the road course and the autocross. Our '67 C10 sporting our new complete chassis with the ExtReme front suspension and rear Torque arm has won several first place trophies at events now and we're just getting started with it! Remember, our whole goal with this new suspension design is for us old school car owners to grab some of the limelight that the Corvettes and race cars disguised as street cars have been hording.

Is a 70 Monte Carlo the same frame? I might have another idea.

Yes, frames are the same. Shucks, the glass kits interchange, as well as the rear deck lids...dash as well as many other parts are the same...basically just a sheet metal changeover.

From what I understand, the Montes have a longer wheelbase, the extra length is built in from the firewall forward. All of the factory suspension components and some other bolt on parts are the same as the Chevelles.

Just for trivia's sake it's the same with Pontiac Grand Prix, both the Monte and GP are actually labeled G bodies rather than A bodies like the Chevelle, GTO, Cutlass, Skylark...

From what I can tell the 4 doors and wagons have the same wheelbase as the Monte.

Front frame horns look the same in the pictures, but I don't have one in front of me.

Ben, you are probably correct, but I was thinking that the longer wheelbase (112" vs. 116") started in 71'. It seems to me as though the 70' models are the same dimensionally. I will do some research...

...and I stand corrected. 70'-72 cars are same wheelbase. I apologize for the mis-information concerning the frame guys!!!!!! In 70' the General had a "split A" platform for the Monte Carlo, before actually calling these G-bodies. They were originally an A-body car. This is what had me thinking that the 70' Monte was same wheelbase as the Chevelle.

Well that clears it up!! lol I am constantly amazed at how DIFFERENT these cars are, Everyone thinks they are all the same. NOT the A body had a lot of changes even 66 and 67 frames are different. you would need 8 different frames to cover them all I think.

Lol! I don't have personal hands on experience but I'm kinda weird and enjoy random car factoids like this. Most of my info comes from forum discussions, websites with GM car specs, and resources like wikipedia, all of which could contain misinfo, but everything I've found on the longer Monte chassis seems consistent.

Notice on the Monte's they have that huge like 8 ft. long fan shroud, apparently because the engine is "set back" further in the longer frame. I always figured the 4 door and wagons were longer in the mid section for the extra doors? Everything I've read says the Monte is longer in the engine bay, so the question between years is if the fenders and hood transfer between the first 3 years? That's good indication of whether the frames would be the same.

Funny, on later 78+ G bodies the chassis is basically the same for 2 door, 4 door and wagons, but the El Camino is quite a bit longer wheelbase. Most people think wagons are longer but they have the 108" wheelbase, just like a 69 Camaro.

As Blake said GM has done some strange things over the years. Good thing Speedtech has a frame to help get it right, and in an ExtReme way too!
