Default LSx, HEMI.......4.6 Ford?

hey guys seems like the GM LS series engines are the cool engine to swap into older GM cars and the new Hemi is the cool engine to swap into old Mopars, but i never hear about anyone taking the 4.6 Ford from say the new mustang and putting it into an older mustang or falcon. anyone doing this swap? will the 4.6 fit in an older mustang? is the swap worth it or is the 300hp 4.6 passed up for bigger hp fords? i saw a falcon at a car show this spring that had a 5.0, but i dont remember reading any magazine articals with a new 4.6 in an older Ford. although ive noticed Painless has a harness for it (or will have soon). just wondering, thought itd be a cool swap.

yeah people are doing it! you have to go Mustang II suspension upfront to make it fit though and get rid of the shock towers. Bobby Alloway is building a Twin Turbo 4.6 in a 69
I like the Big Blocks Big torque/hp If you have the money i think the All aluminium Shelby motors are the go imo

The 4.6 is roughly as wide and as tall as a big block, but a little bit shorter. They respond pretty good to boost, but otherwise, they're kind of big and expensive for the amount of power you get out of them.

There's some swaps going on here:

yeh, i know what tight is,the new hemi is wide like the old hemi, but down lower. squeezing one into a 64 dart works but is real tight. i have to go with a 2 bolt master (to clear the coil pack), move the steering column over to clear the corner of the driverside valve cover, and ill have to notch the passengerside firewall out to make taking off the other valve cover easier (otherwise ill have to jack the engine up if i want to take off the valve cover). all worth it in my eyes. alot of guys go with big block darts and for my year dart they have to use fenderwell headers , which only look good on drag cars. also i wanted a light nimble car, so a big block up front wasnt the way i wanted to go. the new hemis only wiegh 10-15 lbs more then the slant six that i took out, and with the 5.7 and headers you can get 400hp and the 6.1 with headers would be somewhere a around 465hp, plenty hp for my 64 convertible. the other tight spot for the new hemis in small mopars is the alternator. on the car hemis (which are different up front then the truck hemis) the alternator is mounted low, so ill most likely have to notch the flat flange by the frame to get it to fit, wont know for sure until i get one in the car, im only going by pics a guy sent me of his 67 cuda. im also going with a front end unit from RMS which gives me more room for headers, rack n pinion and coil overs. without the torsion bars and steering box, headers will be a little easier.
i guess the Ford guys can do the GT500 thing and put the blown 5.4 setup into a 60s cobra clone. thatd be different (for now)

thats the current plan for pops' cobra, but we are running a navigator dohc5.4 with a procharger( with the roots blower there is NO hood clearance even with the scoop)

still not 100% sure on the exact packaging, as the car will be full round tube chassis, with viper gts suspension holding ccw's 17x12 w/335's & 17x13 w/365's

There was a stang in PHR not too long ago that had a 4.6 blower motor from an 03' cobra in it. Actually came out as a pretty clean build.

I'm not a huge fan of mod motors, mostly cause as you really turn up the power if something gives it's not easy to repair, there just isn't any metal there to work with and the blocks don't take well to resleeving. There isn't the huge cost/easy advantage to a mod like there is with an LSx setup. It's just pretty darn hard to beat the pushrod fords.

The new Hemi has monster potential but it's going to be expensive till the aftermarket really catches up. Not that it matters though, us mopar guys are gluttons for punishment and used to paying out the for everything.

I still like the viper motor swaps stock motor + 10psi from a turbo or two and you're putting an easy 850+ to the wheels on pump gas.

theyve punched the hemi out to 6.4 and are getting 510hp (more hp then that ive read), which is stock v10 power with less weight. i dont think Chrysler will do a crate v10 anytime soon. the 6.4 hemi out powers the stock v10, im thinking the next gen viper just might have a hemi in it. wouldnt a v10 hemi be monsterous? the after market will never be as nice for mopar or ford guys as it is for GM guys, but the new hemi is getting attention. mopar nuts will also pay more for stuff, but the ls1 and 5.7 hemi can be had for about the same price. not the offical MOPAR crate motor, but one through a dealer as "a replacement engine", (gotta know some people). check S&P out, the LS2 and 6.1 hemi are close in price. the coolest thing about GM is you can buy any engine they make as a crate motor with a warrenty, where mopar nuts have to buy the over priced crate 5.7 from MOPAR ($8000) or get them by other means, like knowing someone who works at a shop and can order one as a replacement engine for way less then the offical crate motor.
Also check out XV Motorsports on the links column to the left, theyre making stuff for new hemis now.

I have a roots blown 4.6 I'm putting in a 65 Rambler. Its a little work but I think its worth it. I have about $1,000 in it total for the Rambler, supercharger and a wrecked car with the 4.6. I have a total of about $100 in the 4.6 after I hauled off the wrecked car. It only has 25,00 miles. With a little more it can make some decent hp. I think the way to go is to get a wrecked car from an auction instead of the crate motor route. Thats just my opinion though. I'm really a Mopar guy so its never really been practical or even available to just go buy what we need new.

The 429 Boss shock tower modification will accomodate a mod motor into a 67-70 Mustang with out having to go the mustang II route..........but it is still tight.
