Default power window wiring help

Working on the power window wiring, finally got around to routing all the wires where I want them, I did a quick check to see if they work, I have a painless harness so I connected the wires on the painless harness labeled power windows (left/right power b+) to the red wires of the power window switches wiring that say to the + side of ignition switch.
When I hooked the battery on, the power window switches got illuminated, not supposed to do that, so I connected the red wires from the window switches to the wire that powers the the gauges (ign) ...now the last time I did this the switches worked, I just had to turn the key to the accessory, but now I tryed it and when I turn the key to to accessory the switches light up.....I dont even have the damn wire that controls the illumination connected, so something is wrong here, is the switch bad? If so what caused it to go bad, and how can I fix it?
