Default 2015 SCCA CAM Rules

APPENDIX B - CLASSIC AMERICAN MUSCLE (CAM)

Rationale: The purpose of CAM is to attract automobile enthusiasts who are currently interested and/or participating in Goodguys®, Ultimate Street Car Association®, or other similar events for “classic” vehicles manufactured in North America by “The Big Three” based in the US (GM, Ford, and Chrysler). These avid enthusiasts would largely be a new and different group to join us as SCCA® members and participants. Regions are encouraged to offer this program using a single CAM class or the National Solo® supplemental classes to encourage Classic American Muscle car enthusiasts to join the fun at your SCCA Solo® events!

Eligible Vehicles

•Vehicle must be either a domestic automobile of front-engine/RWD configuration or a “pick-up” truck.

•Vehicle must be licensed and insured and considered fully “street legal” (lights, wipers, etc.). Windshield and glass must be OE or equivalent except as subsequently allowed. Interior and exterior must have a “finished” look.

•Vehicle must pass the mandatory safety inspection (tech) and be in compliance with Section 3, Vehicles, of the 2015 SCCA® National Solo® Rules.

•Dash may be modifed or replaced, but must be complete and cover the original area.

•Headliner may be replaced or removed.

•Exposed metal interior surfaces must be covered, painted, and/or coated. (No “race car” interiors, please.)

•Fuel tank/cell may be modified or replaced and must be separated from the driver/passengers as originally manufactured or by a metal panel/ bulkhead. Fuel must not vent into the driver/passenger compartment directly or indirectly.

•Front splitter, air dam, and/or spoiler may be added below the bumper, but must not extend past the perimeter of the body.

•Rear spoiler may be added, but may extend no more than 8” from the original body nor past the perimeter of the body. No rear wings may be added except OE or equivalent.

I was pretty excited about the rules (especially the finished interior portion) until I saw the CAM-T wheelbase rule. The Mav is more Traditional Muscle Car than it is a Sports car. It s good thing Im not competitive in either class anyway. I've just always thought of it more of a Camaro/Mustang kind of car than Vette/Cobra. I wonder what other cars fall into the over 3000 lb 4-seater with wheelbase less than 108" category. I figured the 4-seat config and >3k rules would be enough but Im obviously biased. I've been thinking of stretching the front wheels forward. I wonder if thats within the rules.

Having not been to a BIG SCCA event, did a group of AMC AMX's show up and clean house and send all the Camaro's and Mustang's home?
Was minimum wheel base a big problem over the year?

GrabberGT I've seen your car at Ft. Worth it is what a Cam T is.

Who showed up with a 92" wheel base Mustang and cleaned house ?

As a Mustang guy ,that is not anywhere near the top of the chart, the rules look ok from here. Still like to see a small tire class.

For what it's worth I suggested that the wheelbase in CAM/T be 103" but the decision makers wanted 108". The best suggestion I can give is to contact Raleigh Boreen or Howard Duncan directly and express your opinion.

Dave, first of all, great job on the rules, I think for the most part you kept things very competitive with them. Second, I agree the 103 WB is a better #. Third, a 92" wheelbase Mustang II did win our season title in the San Diego SCCA CAM class. We had 10-14 cars every event, and he cleaned up early, winning events 2-8. Events 9-13 a couple of us beat him, but only because we had spent big $$ on much bigger tires than the Mustang II had. That being said the small 92" wheel base on most of our courses IS a significant advantage....

So the wheel base rule should now be affectionately called the "Mustang II rule"...

But a MII doesn't fit in the CAM T year range.

What cars '54-'72 come in at or Under 100" WB ? Gremlin ,AMX (ops 2 seater) , Nash Metropolitan , others ?
Why not just limit 'T and 'C both to 100"?

Don't forget the Vega...especially Chris in the Mavvy. (It's NOT a Vega!!)

Rules of any type will generate exclusions, intentionally or unintentionally. Just happy to know what's in or out for 2015. Doesn't mean I have to like it or agree. It sets the course for how people will compete or participate.

The Camaro Club events in North Texas will be broken down by experience level: Pro, Experienced and Novice. Come on out and join us if you are interested. GrabberGT, myself and a few other lat-g members will be out there.

Anyone point me to more info for participating in the SoCal area in this class?

Three different times I've looked for info online about running this around here and I never seem to find much info about this class when I start looking at a regional's website. I'm in Orange County but willing to drive a little (just drove 2 hours each way to run an autocross this past Saturday).

Thanks
