Actually, it was the last "owner" who got the replacement VIN, not the guy who restored it.

According to the article, the guy got shafted every which way possible almost. The state, the legal owner, and the guy the legal owner sold it to after it was returned. Sad situation. I feel for the guy.

Wow. This car was stolen from him...by the state...to give back to a guy who had it stolen from him. Sounds like a hollywood movie to me.
I'd file a claim with my insurance company. Might be worth a try? Of course i'd get arrested for insurance fraud. Wow.
