Default Tire Overhang - Varied Brands

Hey Guys

I've fitted my 10 inch wheels with 1 inch of clearance on the inside and when measuring the distance to the rear outer lip I have 2.5 inches. I'm going to extend to the wheel to 12 inches (+2 inches) by swapping out the outer lip of the wheel - this should leave me with .5 inches of clearance from wheel to fender.

Now my question is how much does the shoulder/tire overhang the rim when mounting a 335/30/18 tire. I know this is dependent on the brand and I'm specifically looking at the BF Goodrich Rival but I think having a thread that documents this for different brands may be beneficial.

not going to be enough if that is to the wheel itself. overhang on 335/30-18 rival is right at 3/8" with no weight on wheel.

Thanks Mike for the save!

Are there any other brands that make the minimum 200 level wear pattern in that size with less over hang. From what I've read the michellin pilot sport have a bigger shoulder.

you would have to stretch the tire to get less overhang, ie, smaller width. Ideally you probably need to scale back to a 11" or 11.5" and run a 315 which is available in the Rival.

What would you say is the required clearance from rim lip to fender. We're looking at possibly flaring the fender out so it might give us the needed clearance.

If your considering a flare I will shoot for 3/4"-1". 1/2" really doesn't leave room for error or movement.

The best way to get the specs. is to look them up on Tire Rack or the tire manufactures website. General rule of thumb is to match the tread width to the wheel width for optimum performance.

The BFG Rival 335/30-18 is as follows:

Tread Width = 12.7"

Section Width (overall width) = 13.5"

I would recommend the Rival 335 on either a 12.5" or 13.0" wheel.

Here's what I use determine tire clearance.

13.50" (section width)
-12.75" (overall wheel width, add 0.75" to the advertised wheel width)

= 0.75/2 = 0.375" of tire overhang on each side.

I would allow at least 0.25" of lateral movement of the sidewall from side to side.

0.375 + 0.25 = 0.625

You'll need at least 0.625" of clearance on each side of the wheel and this will still be tight. Also consider up and down movement and the big radius the inner fender wells have.
