word of advice:
just keep your mouth shut at or near the dmv about any removal/ modification of the tags!!
We had a guy here locally that had the same situation and opened his mouth about it at the dmv, then it got blow out of per portion about it being a "altered vin tag", wanted law enforcement to get involved, etc etc
your car, your original vin tag
just get the "correct style" rivets, reinstall the tags, I am sure that you will repaint over them, and be quiet and be done with it!
