Default Do sending units go bad?

I know I'm sure everything does at some point, but they're only a year old. When I got my car back from the painters, everything worked except for the water temp gauge and the electric fans - and they worked fine before hand. Strange - could the sending units go bad for just sitting around? The engine was out of the car for a while. How can I test them?

Thanks,

You've checked your wiring?
Did the paint shop paint over your ground wire connections. They need bare metal.

I found out that the two sending unit wires were switched...
