Default Electrical problem!

So i just recently rewired my car with a painless wiring harness. Everything went together easy and seemed to be trouble free until this evening. I put power to the system and everything seemed ok until I tried to start the car. As soon as the solenoid on the starter kicks in and everything goes dead. So at first I thought it was a bad starter. Start checking voltages and had 12 volts at the starter but only 3 volts at the fuse where it goes into the car. After I unhooked the leads going into the car it goes back to 12 volts. I put a new wiring harness on the dse dash also. Could i have a ground inside or a bare cable touching something. Please help.

Richard --- I don't think ANYBODY could be able to diagnose your issue via the internet. A guy would have to write a book about what he might go about checking and looking at..... particularly since YOU wired the car recently. That means nobody would be able to SEE what is going where - how it was run - or what you might possibly have done wrong.

I would first ask if you think your battery is fully charged - and when you say you have 12V --- is that actual 12V? Or is it more like 13.2V etc.... because a 12V reading on a resting battery is telling me the battery needs charging... So that's where I'd start.

Sounds like a dead short....make sure the ignition is properly grounded...engine to body..engine to frame..frame to body. once you've established all these grounds are clean and fastened well, you can then start moving on to other things. Good luck and let us know what the issue was or is

Thanks for the replies Greg and Ryan. First off I did find the problem and it was something that I missed. I had two extra leads that i was not using that i missed covering the ends up and they were touching the metal dash. And I should correct myself and say that I had 12.9 volts and not just 12. Just so use to saying 12 volts for a car battery. I appreciate the help.
