Default Fuel System and AN Fittings Help

Ok guys. Please bear with me as I'm kind of new to AN fittings and haven't used them on a project before. I'm a bit baffled by which to use where and why and how to connect them to a hard line or soft line.

So, to start off; I'm using a Tanks Inc fuel injection tank with an internal fuel pump. The top of the assembly has two 1/4" female NPT connections and a barbed fitting that must be for the vent:

http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...rod/prd227.htm

I decided on running a Corvette filter/regulator and just return right near the tank and I found this handy kit from Speedway that I bought:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/LS1-Fu...Kit,41791.html

So, my question is, what fittings and lines to I need to get from point "A" to point "B" and then from point "B" back to point "A" and point "B" to point "C"...LOL This wouldn't be so much of a problem but NONE of my local stores stock these fittings and lines so I'll have to order the right stuff on the first shot so I don't end up buying stuff I don't need. I'd love it if I could just walk in to the store and snake up what I need but it's not gonna happen around here.

I was planning on using the factory 3/8" line in my Camaro but maybe that's not a good idea either. I'm also not sure what fitting I need to connect to the factory LS1 GTO fuel rail up on the engine.

So, to summarize, I know what has to run to where but I'm not sure what the best way is via use of fittings and lines to do it. I don't want to spend a bunch of money as I'm not building a show car but I want it to be safe and reliable. Also, I'm not running the EVAP system FYI.

Part number and links on where to buy are especially appreciated!

Thanks!

The way that I have done it in the past is to have my lines done by hthe local hydraulic hose shop make you up some lines. You will still need to order a few fittings, but not as much You didn't say in your post but I think all the adapters are -6 fittings which is about the same size as 3/8 fuel line. You will also need a npt to -6 male adapter for each port on the fuel pump, not sure about how to hook up your vent though. Then run your feed line to the feed line on the filter. Then run the return on the filter back to the tank out of your premeasured lines that the hydraulic hose place made you. For the line that goes from the filter to the rail, measure and have them make you one. Remember always give yourself some slack( that cost me a few bucks on a redo before). The lines I had made were very reasonable and were braided stainless. If you decide to go with ordering everything make sure you get PTFE hose, otherwise you will smell gas all of the time. The hoses I had made wasn't PTFE but is something else that is the same thing and won't let the fumes out. Hopefully this helps you out a little bit.

So I just looked at your kit and re-read your post. You have 3 blue fittings in your kit, two of them should be 3/8 fittings and one 5/16 fitting. The 5/16 will go onto the smaller line on your filter which will be your return. One of the larger blue fittings will go onto the larger port on the filter which is your inlet, match those up with the inlet and outlet on your pump. The silver one is your outlet fitting, which goes on the side of the filter with one outlet on it. The left over blue fitting which is 3/8 just snaps onto your fuelrail. All of these should be -6 on the end. These fittings are all snap together, very easy to use. I can't get the links to work from summit on the npt to AN so I will just put them here. SUM-220648(3/8 npt to -6) you should need two. Hope this helps you out some

I myself just purchased the tanks inc. stuff, but I bought everything except for my lines from them direct. They sell the same regulator with fittings as Speedway, for the same price.
Basically, all you need is two 1/4" to -6 AN MALE adapters, for the top of your pump, and line.
You are gonna have to make your own lines, so you need to figure out where your mounting your regulator/filter unit, and measure distances. While you order your line, make sure you allow for bends, etc. if you end up needing, say 17 feet total, go ahead and buy a 20 foot piece, because you'll need a couple inches extra here and there, for bends and slack. And often, that's how it's sold anyway.
Your gonna need six FEMALE fittings for the line that you purchase. ( two at the pump, three at the filter/regulator, and one at the rail), because the FEMALE fittings attach to the MALE fittings that you have already purchased. All of the different lines you can buy, have different ends, so do some research. As said above, PTFE lined hose is the way to go, for odor control, and that particular line will use a particular PTFE fitting. As far as straights, or forty-fives, that will depend on where your regulator is, and how you want your line to run, etc.
you can turn to the plumbing section of any Jegs, or Summit book, and become very overwhelmed, very quickly. Go slow, read a lot, and compare facts.
Have fun!

Thanks guys!

I knew that I had the right fittings to use on the filter/regulator, it's the other stuff that has/had me mired in the swamp.

So, do you recommend running the PTFE lined braided stainless hose all the way up to the fuel rail then? Otherwise, if you wanted to do...say, stainless hardline, what's the best way to connect it to AN fittings? I ask that because I'd like to run the flexible hose near the tank so if I have to drop it out I just need to undo one fitting. I'm planning on mounting the filter/regulator right to the tank if possible.

What fitting do I need to connect to the fuel rail?

Che70velle,

Yeah, when I ordered my Tanks Inc. stuff I wasn't quite sure yet which way I was going to go with the regulator. I have to order from Speedway once in a while anyway so I get a catalog. LOL

Obeer-WAN, The kit that you linked has 3 blue fittings, one of the 3/8 blue ones will just snap onto the fuel rail. You will then need a -6 90 or 45 degree fitting to hook onto that. If you want to run hardline they have AN to hardline adapters but I have never used them so not sure how well they work. Anywhere you use braided line you need to use PTFE because of the fumes. I used braided line all the way just because it was easy for me to have them made at the hose place. When you finish post what you did because I would like to know if you went the hardline route. I'm working on a 71 Chevelle that I think I am going to use the tanks inc setup.

You absolutely, positively, do not want the fittings used in the Speedway kit. The plastic clip type, when used in an aftermarket aluminum housing, has shown more than once to come off while the fuel system is pressurized and running.

See here.

I'm pretty sure mine came with the kind that are on the right in the picture in your thread. If you look at the second picture on the speedway link it shows that type. I believe that's what I have, but I'll check.

Just FYI, AN hoses and fittings are sized in 1/16th of an inch. For example a -4 AN = 4/16" or 1/4" -5 AN = 5/16", -6 AN = 6/16" or 3/8", -8 AN = 8/16" or 1/2", etc.

Carl, I have the plastic clip style fittings, made by Russell. I was told that the previous design fitting was known to be faulty, but that since then, there has been a revision, and the new design is "faultless". I just purchased these. What do you know about a revision to these fittings? I have no problem throwing these in the trash, and purchasing the U-Nut style if I have something faulty. Thanks for the heads up!
