The rear wing works in conjunction with the rest of the body, the front splitter and the rear diffuser to produce downforce. This is the effect the air has on the moving vehicle. It also has the effect of causing drag. Downforce is helpful as this increases the effective load onto the tyres giving a greater traction ability (the tyres’ ability to create grip increases with the load or weight applied).
Drag is basically how resistant the vehicle is to penetrating the air, and is a function of many different fac- tors, including frontal area.
Increasing the wing angle to give more downforce will increase the frontal area of the vehicle and consequently increase the drag level, reducing the top speed.
