Default Ignition Starter wire

Can anyone tell me what size the AAW or Painless is using for the ignition wire to the starter for a 69 Camaro? I keep having an intermittent starting issues to where the starter does not engage all the way occasionally(hits flywheel and does not engage). I have been told by several sources (including vendors) if it is intermittent there is a voltage issue. I have replaced the starter (different brands), all new battery wiring pos &neg, made sure all the grounds are good and a new Optima battery with no luck resolving the issue. This is on a new block and I have even gone as far as repalcing the Flex Plate.....

The only item I have not replaced was the wire from the ignition to the starter and need to know what to change it out to as my sources are all over the place for suggestions.

Thanks in advance....

this wire should be a purple wire from the ignition switch straight to the starter if there is NO neutral safty switch .
thats your anwser to your question ........ BUT thats not your problem !

it is a starter allignment problem . i have seen this problem with starters that use no nose cone on the starter .

can you elaborate more on the starter and why?......I surely do not diagree with you as I have tried yes "3" brand new different starters but none have been the cone type and were the Hi-torque mini starters..

does the nose keep it more inline?

Have you tried "bumpin the key" like your checkin for top dead center ? If you bump it before you turn the key to start it-and it helps..it could be a sticky solenoid..if not you need to pick up a assortment of starter shims and get your tooth contact right first.

Thanks..I have already been down that road trying three different starters (all brand new).. I tried all different size shims, moving the starter in out using the pinion spacers, measured everything to a T and specs per each starter, measured the pinion tooth to flex plate gap mesh within specs and it still did it...Thats why i am at a lost what it could be and that is when MSD told me it was a voltage issue since it is intermittent....The switch wiring is the only thing I have not tried so that is why i was leaning that way. I like KennyD's idea to try the starter with the coned end to see if it helps since they are not the expensive ot give it a whirl. Lord knows I have bought the Hi Torque starters from low end to a high expensive one and that didnt help at all...

On the previous flexplate I noticed it always hit in a certain area on the plate we noticed by bumping the motor over. The strter never got in a stuck position but would just hit the flex plate and not go in to the grooves of the teeth. That is why i replaced it thinking there was an issue but it still did it but not as often. Keep in mind these are all brand new parts and not used stuff...That is what is driving me crazy!!!
