setting up a torch to heat up bolts. What is the correct way?

Working on some rusty farm equipment this weekend. I have a set of torches but never really used them for anything but this. I just guess as far as setting up the mixture. There has to be a better way then just lighting and twisting the regulators. Anybody have a rule of thumb?

Torches are fun! You shouldn't need to be over 15psi on acetylene and no more than 20psi on the oxygen. Just crack the acetylene to light, turn up until soot clears then bring on the oxygen.
Not a bad idea to have an extinguisher and watch the fumes comin from that old stuff.

Thanks Dan, I have used them before, it just is a looong period of time between uses. I was just never shown how to do it correctly! I was thinking about it today, so I thought I would post.

The ratio is 1.5 to 1 --- oxy to acetylene

Acetylene psi is based on the size of the cutting torch... I have a small cutting torch that I run with about 5 psi... but it's a very small tip.

Remember to turn the OXYGEN OFF first when done. So it's the reverse of starting out... where you turn the acetylene on first...

So light it up -- then add oxygen to bring to a nice flame - then test with the cutting handle --- so leave yourself a little "room" on the flame before you hit the cutting oxygen on.

Thanks Greg, I am just going to use it to heat up bolts and remove, not cut them out.
