FWIW, I took a business writing class last year and they were pretty big on focusing each resume to the specific employer. One general idea was to match up the specific skill set the company is looking for with the ones you have, so it’s more customized. This also helps with electronic searches and leaves out the extra clutter so it’s easier for them to review it physically. Say you were a machinist, but the company listed a specific machine, an electronic search through the resumes would be more likely to pick up the way the company listed it than what you might put down in a general resume.
They also covered how to write emails along with other communications that might make a difference as well. Probably more involved than you’re looking for but the ideas and concepts changed how I’ll go about it after I graduate.
