Default Sump

Hello,

As my engine will be feeded by a Procharger, i have to weld a sump tank and a return line fitting.

Where must i fit the sump ? At the back of the fuel tank (like on a drag racing car), or at the front of the tank?

FRONT of the tank:

or

BACK of the tank:

I was wondering, if welded at the back, during hard decceleration/braking, could the sump get empty and leave the pump without fuel ?

Concerning the return line, i d like to weld the fitting at this place, right or wrong?

Thanks 4 your help

David

I have an aeromotive sump and I put it in the back of the tank. I think even drag racers put it there because as you accelerate the gas will move to the back. Putting it at the front seems like asking for trouble as it will hang down so far.

If you use that sump, I'd make sure to install it at least so it's about flush with the lowest part of the tank. In the section picture imagine where the gas would be at 1/4 tank (or maybe even higher), it's probably in the lower area nowhere near the sump.

I think that with that particular sump you're likely to have some issues when braking or turning without a full tank. I went with the Aeromotive sump, it required cutting into my tank and more welding but it was clearly superior if you intend to let your tank drop below 1/2 tank or turn a corner.

You could always just run a surge tank. Just fab up a 1/2 to 1 gallon tank to mount in the engine bay and run your high pressure pump between it and the rail. Use a boost pump to feed the tank.

It's done over here all the time and I cant figure out why it's not popular in the US? It's way simpler/cheaper than custom baffled tanks or sumps, and is safer than welding a fuel tank IMO.
