Bent rod question - Lateral-g Forums

I was cruising criagslist tonight looking for an LS engine. I found an LS2 with a 6 speed from an 05 GTO. The ad states it has a bent rod and tranny needs sychros. For 1400 OBO.

Question one: is it worth rebuilding a block with a bent rod? I know it can open a big can of worms once I get into it.

Question B: what tranny came in 05 GTO's

Question 3: if it's worth rebuilding the engine and tranny. Would $1000 be worth it? The ad clearly states he needs to get rid of it.

I have not called or looked into the ad anymore than reading it. I just don't want to waste the time and energy on it if it's junk to begin with.

Thanks in advance for any help on my rookie questions.

It depends on what bent the rod, probably hydro-locked it in which case if the rod didn't make contact with the block or anything it should be fine. You'd need a rod, bearing and probably a piston. Try to find out how the rod got bent, that is the key.

I have the same tranny from a '05 GTO, it's a T56 6 spd

Depending on what bent the rod I would give him $1k for it.

If it's got a bent rod and supposedly needs synchros, it's not that simple. That babies been rode hard and put up wet. I'd find a better base.

Well that is a good point. I was coming from the position of I'd do all the work myself and just have to buy the parts. If you'd have to pay someone to fix it the deal might not look as good.

I still think it's worth trying to find out what happened to the motor and visually inspect the bottom end. Maybe the guy doesn't know what he's talking about or it has a different problem that might not be as big a deal.

If you were planning on beefing up the trans a bit anyway as I've heard is a good idea on the GTO T56 then the worn synchros don't really matter. If the trans is disconnected from the engine you can turn the input shaft in each gear and make sure it rotates smoothly indicating all the gear teeth are probably intact.

A bent rod may have injured the crank journal.

Thanks for the help everyone, Im waiting for a call back hopefully i can look at it today or tomorrow.

I plan to do as much work as I can myself, and if not Virginia Speed is only 15 minutes away.
