68 Camaro Bullet Mirror Install

I have seen a few threads on installing 2nd gen mirrors on a 1st gen but they usually just say to shave 1/8 off the mirror stem and then its on a 69 camaro usually. We had thought about bullet mirrors after we painted the doors and since we did not weld up the holes etc... we could not use the vision hot rod mirrors cause their mirror stem would not cover the all the holes on the driver door.

So I figured I would post up how we put them on a 68 camaro without welding up the driver side door holes. Doing it this way we had to redrill both holes as you can see in the pictures, this was so it would cover the remote cable hole and give me a spot to mount the 2nd gen mirror mount plate and do as little modification to the door as needed. We had to dremel out the plastic base some so we could get the remote cable thru the new setup.

We snugged up the screw to the very front and then used that to level out the mirror so we would know were we wanted to drill the back hole.

Milage may vary and placement is up to you I guess, but ours ended up being 5 1/2 inches from the edge of the plastic base to the edge of door along the crease body line.

We then held the mirror upto the door on the plastic base and took a sharpie and marked the bottom os the stem along the top of the plastic base lip. Which you will see the mirror will rock back forth some because the center of the mirror stem extends down further and needs to be trimmed. And its about 1/8th of an inch. But doing it this way will make sure it fits your door body lines.

Once you have trimmed the mirror stem, then mount it up and repeat the steps for the passenger side!
