Default Here's a question about purchasing a car out of state.

I'm in NY and just bought a car in Indiana. My plan is to fly over and drive it back, make a road trip out of it. However, in Indiana they must surrender the plates immediately after the title is signed - so I wouldn't have any plates on the way home. Is it possible for the Indiana DMV to give a temp. registration to an out of state buyer, or does NY give out pre-registrations just so I can drive it home? I know this must have been done before, I just can't figure out how!

Just put a copy of the bill of sale in the back window

Seriously.

I sold a H1 hummer to a guy from Michigan. He and his family flew down and I picked him up at the airport. Took him to the truck, and they loaded all their luggage into the truck. I asked him if he had a plate and he said nope. I'll just put a copy of the bill of sale we sign in the back window and drive home. He said he's done it many many times with no hassle.

That might work, that's basically what the dealers do when you buy a new car now that I think of it - they just stick a temp. bill of sale in the window for you. Nice Hummer BTW!

I'd just put some plates on it from another vehicle you own, and don't do anything to get pulled over. JMO.

Check w DMV in your home state, each state is different but in VA DMV will sell you temp plates to transport vehicle back legally.

Thanks guys - I just called the BMV in Indiana and they told me that if I bring proof of insurance and the signed bill of sale, they'll give me a temporary pass so I can drive it back to NY and register it there. Sounds like a plan!

Got back last weekend from Indiana, the plan worked without a hitch. Flew out to IN and drove the car back 13 hours to NY:

Now, to make it a G-Machine! Actually, it already has some upgraded suspension pieces including Yenko sways and handles pretty good. I need to rebuild the steering rack to take out a bunch of play in the steering, and I'd love to get a set of 16" black steely cragars. I hope to get it out to a couple of autoX events this season to see how she'll do.
