My view on out of the box projects

Ok,

First off,
There are some highly skilled people here, many with tools I could only dream of having, and others with a lot deeper pockets than I have, and that is awesome!! But I guess this a poor man with basic tools point of view

I have had a fair amount of Camaros, Mustangs, Novas, Chevelles, etc.
But now I am in possession of a 74 Road Runner.

And I guess while not way out there you still don't see too many of them out there, and parts are REAL hard to come by. I cant just open a catalog and order replacement panels, or bolt in kits of any sort, everything seems to stop at the 71-72 models.

So while I do like the car, I just wish sometimes that I had a Camaro or Mustang again, something I can buy off the shelf stuff for, something I can cut up and not worry about, I have practiced a fair amount on fabricating body panels and general body mods with a few Jeeps (bumpers, roll cages, highline fenders, etc) and a rat rod (made my own frame, bed, floors, chopped top, etc) and would like to do some body mods to a "muscle car" but am afraid to cut into the one I currently own.. I have ideas for other cars I want to do, but don't have any thoughts on this one.. And I am afraid to do anything to it that I cant change back to stock with minimal effort..

OH ya, I'm also poor, So I also want low cost parts, not $850 NOS Tail light assemblies, $700 front Fender, or $475 rechromed front bumper $300 Exhaust tips.. (Yes these are all prices for 74 Road Runner stuff on Ebay right now) Big Block overdrive manual transmissions are not cheap, but really could use one (Keisler is the only one I know that has a kit)

I was looking at parts for a 66 Mustang the other day and almost cried..

So there is good and bad I guess to thinking outside the box...
Right now I want a nice box, it don't even have to be square, lol

I just a fool and you are reading this thinking "its only a 74 Road Runner, no one wants them anyway, cut it up"

Just wondering what people of you think about this..
Did aftermarket support come into play when buying your current project?

Did one in 86 , ditched a vinal top . Hood & roof were black , the rest a blue metallic . . Back in the laquer days .
Family friend had a white / silver one ..1975 or so , stuffed a Hemi in it .
So I have a soft spot for em .

My neighbor has a 74 (white, black top with a 440 he stuffed in it). He is facing the same issues, not much aftermarket support. He has to either build, modify or restore old parts to get what he wants. My point is that he IS doing it. It just takes longer. But it can be done. It's your car, cut into it if that is what you want. make it the way you want it. Otherwise you will not enjoy it.

but ya, with money like it is right now, I just sometimes wish
there was some aftermarket support..

hang in there and build it the way you want, it may take a little longer but who really cares! A project is a project no matter what stage it is in. As for cutting it up, its yours to do whatever makes you happy. As a owner of a old mopar myself Ive heard some say that I shouldnt have done what I did to my superbee but who cares what the purist think. Im a hot rodder 1st Mopar man 2nd.
