If it was welded in in the same manner and location, it would have done the same thing. That was very poorly installed regardless of bolted in or welded in. If bolts can hold skyscrapers together, they can hold a cage in a car together.

Look again. It's not even a cage. It's just a roll bar. I can't see through the doors, but I'd imagine it was just a 4 point. I wouldn't imagine it would do anything for support and safety in that sort of situation.
