Default Am I getting ripped off?

Im just curious if i am paying too much or if its in line with what everyone else is paying? I have a 67 firebird convertible that a high school friend of mine is working on for me. I have supplied all of the parts, he is just charging me labor. I gave him a deposit of 5k when the car was dropped off. We are replacing every body panel on this car! When i dropped the car off to him I was told the 5k should get me to the front clip, meaning floors, rockers, mini tubs, quarters and rear tail panel and trunk lid.
So far the rockers, mini tubs and quarters are installed and the rear tail panel is clamped on.
I was informed a few weeks ago that he is out of money and i need to come up with more cash for him to resume. I was also told that it would take another 20k -30k to finish.
Is this in line with what everyone else is charging? Mind you this shop is in upstate ny and this is by far his biggest build ever!

Wow, that's got to be a shocker. $5K and we can do this and now it's $20-30K more to finish. Really need more details on EXACTLY what he's doing for that $20-30K. Also, seeing how this is his biggest build, I would imagine he would be over estimating as he's never done a job like that and doesn't want to short himself. I would draw up a contract between you both stating EXACTLY what's gonna be done. Then maybe post that up and see what others think.

check out www.mikescustomcars.com for comparison on a complete shell. I am not sure how he can miss his esitmate by that much. I'd proceed with caution,

floors 12 to 20 hours depening on how much floor
rockers Outers, 16 hour for the pair
mini tubs On a convertible 40 hours
quarters 15 hours each including outer wheels houses
rear tail panel 8 hours
trunk lid included

That is about 100 hours for sheetmetal. I know they did some custom treatment to your quarters.

If the sheetmetal is right, your 200 to 240 hours from painted.

What is his hourly rate?

At 20K to 30K additional cost. I would think that would include a very nice paint job as well.
Seems to me that someone grossly under estimated what the final cost would be to complete your project.
You would be better off cutting your losses and take that 30K and buy a finished car.
He's hitting you with a 400% to 600% increase in cost. W.T.F. OVER?
