Default autocross events

There has been a significant amount of discussion on another forum about putting together a "mini One lap" event for pro-tour type cars. This may take the form of 5 days, 5 tracks...kind of like the Dragweek format. I've talked to several magazine and promoter type people about this over the last couple of years and it looks like it is inching ever closer to reality, probably in 2009. In the meantime there are several "warm-up" events that offer some hope of automotive stimulation.
The Hotrod Power Tour is having an autocross again this year at the Ames, Iowa stop on June 11th. We had 105 cars run 470 laps aat the Power Tour stop in Evansville last year.
The Nashville Goodguys show is June 27-29. They have moved the autocross to the other side of the stadium where the swapmeet used to be. This will be a much larger venue with a larger track layout. I know the Goodguys tracks are quite short right now, but still better than sitting around in a lawnchair. They are also less intimidating for the civilians who may not want to beat on their cars like the rest of us.
Goodguys is also running an autocross on Friday at the Columbus show. All of the Street Machine of the Year contenders will be required to participate to eligible for the SMOY award. The autocross will be on Friday only because there are 7000 cars at this event and Saturday is a complete cluster**** for traffic. If you want to "play the stadium", Columbus will be the place to be. I hear John Hotchkis is bringing a new 72 Nova...

This is only a few of the available events. I haven't even covered the RTTH event in Pigeon Forge or any of the other Goodguys autocross events. This stuff is a little light on the west coast, but we are working on it for 2009

We'll have the Velocity Camaro and several other air ride cars these events. Come out and take a look or take a ride. Better yet...take a lap. It ALL about the fun!

BTW...there have been several examples of potential "world's baddest pro-tour car thrown around the last few days. I'm sure this forum will have their own opinion about that!

I know you're in the east but it would be GREAT to have an event like this out here.. could do Willow Springs, Buttonwillow, Vegas, and another couple venues. If it's autocross then we could find places even easier.

Us west coasters always get screwed.. all the cool stuff is thousands of miles away...

Just an idea

As the late Sam Kinison one opined " If you live in the desert..MOVE!!" Or something like that. hehehe I'm sorry, we don't get much of a chance to pick on you California guys here in the cornfield. I remember feeling the same way in the 70's when EVERYTHING happened in Cali. Then the Street MAchine Nationals came along. How many of you guys were in Indy in 78-81? Remember the dogs on Shadeland?

I would love to say that the "mini one lap" may happen on the west coast, but the reality is that the bulk of the participants are still everywhere else. We ARE going to try more Goodguys autocross stuff next year on the west coast, maybe Pleasanton, maybe Scottsdale. Send me your votes!

I would be very interested in the mini one lap deal if it were next year. My quickie strip and repaint is going a lot slooowwer than expected.

We were on the Power Tour with the Velocity Camaro during the Atlanta event. . We ran the Power Tour Autocross in Ames, Ia. and dodged the floods the rest of the week. Brad Coomer from our shop drove the Goodguys Chevelle to Atlanta and ran the autocross. He came within .001 of beating the DSE Camaro...I was happy with that considering that the Chevelle is 800 lbs heavier!
We will have Velocity, the GG Chevelle, our 66 Chevelle, our 71 Camaro, our 72 C10, our 66 Impala, and my 69 Mustang at the Nashville GG event this weekend for the show and autocross. See you there?
