Stainless steel weld

How do you produce this kinds of welds.I have 304SS tubing.We want this look on our exhaust tubing.I know its tig welded, what filler rod is used.I had some exhaust welded and its not even close to the way this looks.

LOTS of practice and or machine welding.

Lots of practice, a good TIG, and for 304 you typically use ER308L filler rod.

super clean parts, rear gas and a pulsed tig are a must... but it wont look that good without tonnes of experience..

so practice practice....

but if you want a super professional look... talk to the best professional out there....

Most of those are welded in a cabinet that is pressurized with gas to achieve that type of weld quality. But a good welder can achieve the same quality.

For piping you need to back purge, which is to fill the pipe with gas when welding. Always use a stainless filler rod that is a higher number than the material your welding.

Use 308 rod on 304 stainless, clean the weld area, back gas, and watch your heat input. Do not step on the pedal hard and run the bead fast. You should bring the heat up with the minimum amps required to start the weld puddle, then start laying down your weld. Using too much heat is a common mistake and will result in bad looking welds.

What that means is to purge the inside of the tubing with the shielding gas. Small temporary plugs on each end with a hose from the gas bottle will work. If you pressurize the inside of the tube you can blow the weld puddle outwards. You are only looking to create a protective atmosphere on the inside of the tube, the same protective atmosphere at the end of the torch created by the nozzle & shielding gas. Make two plugs, feed the gas into a plug on one end of the tube, and leave a small hole in the temporary plug on the other end of the tube so you do not pressurize the tube. Wood works, cardboard works, you can even use rubber bands and aluminum foil as the plugs and then just poke one hole for the hose and another hole on the other end to vent. Nothing fancy required.

The backpurging produces a cleaner weld on the inside surface.
