Default Fastest through the "Kink"

So far, the SN65 has been at four different race tracks.

These are (in no particular order) the Autobahn, Road Atlanta, Putnam and Road America.

So far, Road America has been the most notable.

At Road America a "member" took Wayne for a ride through the "Kink" at about 120. He said that with a little tweaking here and there (different shocks and springs, etc...) he bets he would be able to run the kink at about 140 plus or minus.

Now I know that these numbers are highly subjective, but they do not sound to shabby to me, especially for what is basically a street car.

OBTW, from what I understand, most AIX cars pass through the Kink in the 115 to 120 range.

Has anyone here driven on Road America? If so, what were you driving and how fast have you been through the kink?

120 sounds pretty fast for a street car.

I don't have a speedo in my AI car but I'm upshift into 4th before the kink, lift slightly before entry and then balst through the kink. I know I can go faster there but after watching more than one car loose control and bounce off the walls after the Kink, I treat the corner with a fair amouont of respect.

I have a RA video on my Pufile site (http://www.putfile.com/racer_tom) from last August. I will be there again next weekend for the SCCA double Regional.

Fot those of you who don't know the corners at Road America, the kink is the slight right-hand corner following the looooong right had corner.

Also on Pufile are pictues I took at the 2007 KIC. Look closely and you will see a couple shots of the SN65! Small world, eh?

SNIP...
The fellow who was driving our car has a vintage CanAm car. It comes with a pretty impressive pedigree. He has done a few mods to it. He replaced all the aluminum body panels with carbon fiber, etc...

He says that he hits upward of 180 to 190 through the kink.

He said that just before the kink he smackes the breakes to set the front end and then it is balls to the walls.

George also said that many people swing out to far on the last curve before the front straight. As he was explaining this to Wayne, the DB3 they were following (so close that you could not see the plate) swung out to far. George (reacting on instinct) hit the gas as he cut underneith and blew by him like he was standing still.

Also, a tricked out Viper tried to pass Wayne on the long front straight. I think they were a bit shocked when Wayne pushed the accelerator to the floor and they could not pass him. They could only watch in frustration as Wayne pulled away.

Bob,
Did you ever put the whipple or kenne bell blower on the car? If so, did you dyno it again?

Do you have any driving footage of the car at the track?

Hi David,

Yes, we put a Whipple on the 4.6. We make about 640 HP and 630 Foot Lbs of Torque.

We do have video of the SN65 on the Autobahn, but the footage is rather poor.

As far as HP goes, our next project is going to make upwards of 1,100 HP and 1,000 Foot Lbs of Torque. When set up for the drag strip, we should be capable of 8 sec 1/4 mile blasts. We are shooting for a top end of around 220 or so.

My motor is very mild - it dyno'd at 290 rwhp. (5.0, cast pistons, Edelbrock P-RPM Heads, E303 cam)

It's powerful enough for go fairly quick and sound good doing it. Not too powerful to break parts.

Of course my next motor will step up some. In the SCCA class I run (B-Prepared) I need to compete with Porsche 911 cup cars - more power will certainly be needed.

Great too see another PT car on the track. But what difference does it make how fast the car can go through this particular turn? Whats wrong with the shocks and springs on the car now? Going into a turn at 140 is a lot different than 120, man going through a turn at 125 can be a LOT different than going at 120. I'm not sure what the reason behind this logic is? Does this one particular turn determine the all around track capabilities of a vehicle? Either way cool stuff, tell us some more about the Autobahn, did you ship the car all the way over there just to drive it on the Autobahn? If so you are one lucky man!

The Autobahn that he's referring to is a track outside of Joliet, near Chicago.

Here are a couple of links to some of my laps at RA early this spring. I was going pretty easy on it, especially through the kink, I've seen that corner eat way too many street cars.

I have some other cool footage of the kink, but have to find somewhere to host it.
