If you go based on the amount of work that went into the build, Chip Foose's build would have to take it.

I really want to love what Foose did and the amount of work and scope of the project were obviously insane but there's some design aspects on there that I'm a bit surprised by. I'm sure the fit and finish is incredible and I think it was an awesome, awesome concept but based on the pix I've seen online I'm leaning heavily towards that beautiful 56 Plymouth with Chrysler headlights. That car is stunning.

I will say that this is overall a stronger Great 8 than I've seen in the past where 1 or 2 or even 3 cars were really special.

That's what they are! Good call Ben! Obviously not stock but I couldn't put my finger on it. I like that they didn't mold them in and left them "stock" looking. Beautiful car, looking forward to seeing all the details on it.

AND THE WINNER IS!

Built by: Chip Foose

Congrats on the Ridler award. I had hoped it would have been GAP Racing but Foose put together an excellent car.

Steve wedged that car, much like Suncammer. I saw it awhile back right after he had the majority of the metalwork done. Good thing Steve's shop is 20 minutes from my shop so I can go drool on it up close.

Congrats on the win Chip Foose designs....

However after reading the rules for entry I don't believe the car was eligible for entry.

Here are the rules,
Quote:
Don Ridler was the first professional promoter hired by the Michigan Hot Rod Association to assist them with the fledgling Autorama in the fifties. With Don’s creativity and professional approach in promoting, Autorama was able to grow tremendously, and eventually move to its present home at Cobo Center in 1961. In 1963, Autorama decided to honor Don Ridler, who had prematurely passed away, with an award given in his name.

Originally the award was given to the Best Vehicle shown for the first time. Over the last forty-nine years the award has evolved to better conform to new ideas, changing designs and concepts. Today it emphasizes creativity, engineering and workmanship. Anyone building a vehicle for Ridler competition should post these words on their garage wall. The vehicle that best represents these three areas will win the Ridler Award.

In addition to the above judging guidelines, there are a few hard and fast rules, with no exceptions.

The vehicle must make its first public showing at the Detroit Autorama. Showing the vehicle at any indoor or outdoor show or any unique part of the entry, i.e. frame, engine or body, will make it ineligible for the competition. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about eligibility.

Realizing that car owners and builders may need some form of exposure to develop interest or to gain sponsorship, vehicles contending for the Ridler Award may have limited exposure as follows: Magazines or video of the building process are allowed, only of individual components such as chassis only, engine only, body panels being built, but not assembled. Photos, internet, magazine, TV coverage or video of the entry in its completed form, with or without paint, interior or engine are not permitted. If the coverage of the entry gives the appearance of a total or completed car, painted or not, the vehicle entry will be disqualified from the Ridler Award competition. Additionally, no articles may be written about the build project; allowable coverage is limited to photos with captions only.

The vehicle must prove to be minimally operable. It must start, move forward and backward under its own power, turn left and right and stop using the brake pedal, before it can be placed on the floor for display. Keep in mind that these guidelines are minimum qualifiers. Operational functionality is something the judges will look at.

Once the final Ridler Contenders have been determined, the field will be narrowed to eight finalists, which will be referred to as the Pirelli Tire Great 8. Because of the number of entries contending, the process of elimination will begin on Thursday evening after move-in has been completed. Entries do not need to be 100% set-up, but should be to a state that they can be evaluated fairly. The Pirelli Tire Great 8 Finalists are notified Friday morning and introduced at the Ridler’s Ball on Friday evening.

If an entry is selected as a Pirelli Tire Great 8 Ridler Finalist, the car will not be eligible for any Autorama awards involving class judging and special awards. Each of the Pirelli Tire Great 8 will, however, receive a cash award of $1,000 paid on Friday evening at the Ridler’s Ball. Owners and builders should also keep in mind that they will be asked during the weekend to open and close their vehicle to be checked for fit and finish, and to make sure everything is operational.

There will be a Pirelli Tire Great 8 Ridler Contenders meeting Saturday evening for the builders and owners. This meeting is an opportunity to meet the other finalists, the judging staff and ask questions on how your car will be judged.
The section I'm referring to is highlighted in Bolded Blue. If you check out Chip Foose's social media platforms you'll see all kinds of pictures of this car in it's whole form, in primer, wheels on, completed before paint, in paint, etc.

I heard this info from 2-3 other Great 8 competitor's who didn't media broadcast their builds. One in particular thought he was getting preferential treatment.

Sometimes it's nice to just go and be a spectator and take pictures.

Interesting. Can't wait to see more pics of the car and especially the Camaro. The paint looks fabulous but I'm curious about the front grill

I know that is why Tim kept his out of view complete or otherwise. Hell it was kept in the clean room in their shop with cardboard covering the windows and a locked door only he had the key too. No phones allowed inside either.

I will say I think I saw some preferential treatment. I saw an article on the Great 8 cars, with all having 1 MAYBE 2 pictures each...Except the Foose build which had 7, and the Green Dart which had 3-4 pictures.

Just seems a little biased.

Others: Hey Chip, uhhh...I don't think you specifically adhered to the rules.

Chip Foose: Don't hate the player, hate the game!!

Imposter had fit and finish that you would expect from Foose. The level on integration was spectacular. What alot of you that weren't there didn't see it they had a stock 65 Impala in the display as well with lines drawn on it showing where all the sections were taken out of the body. That was genius. Aside from that, in my opinion when Chip brings a car for the Ridler award he has a huge lead in judging before the car is even unload from the hauler.

I still think visual appeal should be a major part of the criteria. Based on that and if you could be impartial when Foose's name is on the car I don't think Imposter would have won. There was a very strong field of cars there. It was a great show. I hadn't been there since 1992 when I was with a car that made the final group. (Before Official Great 8 designation). I think I will be back every year now. Congrats to all those that made the Great 8 and to Chip and the win!

On another note, I wanted to say that the best part of the show to me wasn't even one of the cars. I obviously spent some time in the Great 8 area Saturday. All the time I was there I noticed the owner of the Big Oak Garage 65 Dart. His name is Willie Maise. I could not help but notice what a fantastic time he was having the whole time he was there. He truly enjoyed talking to people about the car and was so proud. He was laughing and smiling every time I saw him. Anything competitive brings alot of drama, especially indoor car shows with this type of award. On the outside it looked as though he could have cared less. He was proud of his car, proud they made the great 8 and was having a blast. That's what this is all about in my opinion. So for Will Posey and Big Oak Garage, not only did they build a fantastic car, they made one owner a very happy and satisfied and gave him a weekend he will I'm sure remember the rest of his life!
