Heat Treating Axle shafts
can anyone tell me anything about having my axles heat treated?
I have a moser rear end that i need the axles shortened and the only place nearby wont do them unless i know exactly what metal it is and how hard i want them??
as they are already hardended do they need re heating after shortening?
any ideas on the subject ?
thaks, Gav

Why do you feel it is necessary to heat treat the axles again? Just because you are shortening them? If that is the case and you are only cutting some of the spline off, it is not needed. If you need to shorten them enough that you would need to respline them, I would recommend buying new. Anytime you heat treat something, you take have the chance of movement. ie. warp/bend in the case of your axles. In a lot of cases final machining is done after heat treat so that the required tolerances can be held. And, your local precessing vendors are correct. You cannot heat treat these without knowing the alloy and what has already been done. For a few hundred bucks, it's not worth it. Hope that helps.

I didn't realize you're down under. That certainly adds to the cost, but may still be your best bet. How much do they need shortened?

If i remember correctly, It's 1 1/2" on alum carrier (spool) and 1" on steel carrier is safe

I don't know how much spline is need to transmit the power. I would contact your axle mfg. and ask them. They should be able to answer that based on their axle matl., heat treat, etc.. In you haven't yet, i would verify actual engagement vs total length. What I mean is, will there be enough spline left to allow the axle to fully engage the carrier? We had this trouble on our race cars. You could shorten them enough for length, but the axle spline would bottom out on the carrier before the axle was all the way in. Good luck!

^^^^THiS^^^
Just for giggles, I checked the spline engagement on one of my old 9" 33 spline Currie drag axles and total engagedment of the splines into the carrier was 1 3/8
