Default GM 6l80

What does GM gain by using a 6l80 vs. 4l60? I'm looking for an lsx/auto combo for my 56 Chevy 2 door and can't figure out if there are any advantages to using the 6l80. Making it fit in the tunnel seems like a major headache.

Default 6 speed

I think its just a bit longer about 2 inches
A guy over on Ls1tech put 1 behind an Ls7 in a 68 Camaro. Works like a charm according to him..

More ratios give better mileage and lower emissions plus clutch to clutch operation controlled by a computer which these are uses less moving parts and lowers cost. Soon there will be 7 speed boxes and then 8 speed from GM. BMW/Benz already doing 7 maybe 8.

As customcam mentions my 68 Camaro with A6 runs well. About 8000 miles so far.

But...yes 4L60/65 is certainly simpler and lower cost plus easier ground clearance on older cars.

Doing 6L80 on 71 Camaro right now.. Takes alot of work to get one of these trans into 1st or 2nd gen Camaros.. The trans is huge, so tunnel has to be cut out.. Length is not a problem but the oil pan is a concern.. Been reading the post they have going on in LS1 Tech.. Lots of good info their..

Bought an L99 with six speed trans from 2010 Camaro
