Default Muffler location affect on sound?

Working on a custom build of a '67 Mustang. It has a Ford Aluminator (stack injected) 4.6 DOHC engine setup in it. Because of the changes in the layout of the suspension we have the option of fitting the mufflers either in the factory location in front of the differential or just in front of the rear valance with the exhaust tips right on the mufflers. What I am curious about is how the location of the mufflers in the system will affect the tone of the exhaust note?

what i've noticed is that the more pipe you have after the muffler, the more mellow the car sounds. Thats usually comparing dumps vs. tailpipes though.
