It takes a brave man to start with a project in that shape. The progress pics are looking great!
I second that! That is a huge undertaking...but more than worth it in the end with the amount of pure pride!
Keep us posted.

Congrats Steve!! I know it was a long and trying time...but it's worth it!
What most of you guys don't know is that he sold a very nice second gen to start this project....now that's brave!!
Keep the pics coming as you mock up the car and get it into paint!!

thanks for the kind words guys....I can't take the credit for doing all the metal work.....it has been quite a struggle with this car.I have read so many people's conplaints about bodyshops out there and hoped I had gone the right way with finding a guy an hour north of me and does not have a full time job but works out of his garage. But reality kicks into high gear and the excuses from this guy start flying. The guy does great work when he feels like working which is very rarely. My car has been there 15 months when the original quote was 4-6 weeks tops.Anyways the car is almost ready with the fab work and will be home soon.Anthony your so right it was all worth it the car looks awesome and Im so excited to get it home.I will keep everyone posted.

Looks like it's coming along nicely. I also agree that you are brave to tackle this. I don't think very many people realize the patience you have to have when taking on a project this size. Be patient and you will be happy in the end.

Just saw this thread for the first time. WOW. Guys, isn't it amazing when an average joe (no offense) pulls off a professional job and gains support and insight from people literally thousands of miles away?! The first thing I thought of when I saw the garage pics with the new wheels and that projected stance, SW's 69 @sema 06. Great job dude.

what kind of work are you doing around the brake vents?
We wanted to make sure the fins would fit cause the pockets on the aftermarket quarters are not deep enough so we clearance them to fit flush. So when the car is painted everything should fit nice.

Well I have some more progress to show you guys. After dropping in my LS1 I ran into a few fitment issues. One in particular was my factory vacuum booster wasn't allowing one of my coils to bolt down.So I had a 2001 C5 booster and master that I wanted to use.So after talking to a few of our members here I went for it.Basically what I did was tranfer over the factory booster bracket and modify it to bolt onto the C5 booster so everything could bolt in smoothly together.Hopefully the pics are self explanitory but please shoot me some questions I"d be pleased to answer them. The whole process took me about 6hrs and it fits perfect.
Steve

well I finally finished mocking up my exhaust for the second time!! Was going gen1 style engine with headers but things have changed to LS1 so some changes needed to be made to the down pipes.Headers are not in the budget so this will have to do.Quite a job to do on your back I tell ya:mad: .Anyways I got it done and also received my custom engine harness from Howell and I gotta say what a sweet harness.Well enjoy the pics.

I just read through the whole build and it is looking great. I think I noticed that you leaded the roof seam and some high stress areas. Did you do that yourself, or farm it out ? Going to do the same on my car but was not 100%confident to neutralize the tinning acid. Helps to get advice from someone who knows. My roof seam is pretty rough and too deep for plastic in my opinion. If you would explain that process in a little more detail it would be appreciated by others I think.
Thanks !

Thanks for the kind comment but I cant tell you how its done I just watched my buddy do the work.I will ask him to come by my place and he will post up how he did it. That stuff really works well and minimizes the amount of filler required to finish that area.I myself can say that first he stich welded the entire seam slowly. He would do about 2" and then I would cool the area with my air blower and we repeated that until it was all welded up.Then grind and then he prepped it but I will let him take over from here.I will get back to ya.

I know its a long time ago post wise but i just started from the beginning...
I was wondering why you kept the old torque boxes when yo replaced the floor?
They come with the new floor and you replaced it so what did you do? Remove the new ones off the new floor to keep the old ones attached to the rails? Maybe because of them beeing already welded you preferred keeping these rather than risking to damage the frame rails when removing them?
Im just wondering as im jumping into this big job myself (once again!) and have always used the new ones that are on the replacement floor. Just asking as i might have missed on something or a reason to do it that way.... Always looking for a better way to do things!
Keep the work up, your getting there!!

He didnt keep it, the car is minitubbed and the shock location is relocated in the crossmember that you see. No more torque box

I dont think you are talking about the same thing as i am....
Torque boxes stay on cars no matter what you use suspension wise.
I'm talking about the "torque box" not a "shock mount" the part where the front leaf spring supporting "cage" bolts to after beeing attached to the leaf, and now where the front lower tubes of the Quadra link bolts onto.
You can see them in a few pics when looking at the front of the frame rails when he was replaceing the floor. They stayed on and there are no pics of them afterwards showing if he kept them or not.... Wondering? And why also?

Leadfoot I really don't know! I can only remember dropping off the full trunk floor and full floor pans to my buddy and he welded them up. I do remember that the torque boxes were in great shape after the car was blasted. do the torque boxes come with the floor pans for sure?

If you move them or do anything with them -- the "address" that was used to copy and paste then becomes "broken"....

Yup, I have to beat this into painter everyday of the week!!! Isocyanates stay in your fat cells for ever they never come out and can do lots of damage to your nerves and other organs!!!

The body and paint work are high end! Attended many Goodguys events and could say without a doubt this car can sit beside some of best built cars and definately belong. As for the wheels, you're right on Jeff - the original design team at Fikse nailed it, timeless piece.

Congrats Steve it does look great indeed bud....
"pro66tour" you're right his paint work has stood up with the very best at GG events for years... As a matter of fact his work has been on the cover of "Chevy High",, shown at SEMA on multiple cars/occasions, judged at the Optima in no less than 5 separate cars, both full feature + Cameo shots in Camaro performers and on Television in R U faster than a Redneck.. Mike "Pablo" Tersigni is no stranger to this game with over 30 years experience and in fact the guy that actually created "Candy Cherry Black" as a color/recipe using house of colors paint.. He is well regarded within the old school folks there and is likely the best painter in my opinion in the city,, if not region period...

'Tazz..' That's an impressive portfolio, and excited about the prospect of Mike laying the paint on my car at some point in the future, and so close to home too!

Man this car just "does it" for me. I' cant quite put my finger on it of "what" exactly it is, quite likely its "the sum of the total" cause everything is just right.
Great wheels, great paint (color/stripes/quality)....
Finish it up soon....

Mike, I have a pretty good idea why Steve's car 'does it' for ya…
It's the same thing that happened to you (and all of us) the first time you laid eyes on a muscle car as a kid (and maybe a first gen), only this time you know what it's truly capable of. The spectrum of protour is quite wide, but knowing Steve, like me - It's about keeping the car looking like it rolled off the factory floor with subtle changes, with a wheel and stance combination that screems, "It just has to be this way!" :D

Guys thanks for all the great compliments!!!!!!! This car would have never happened if it wasnt for a few really good friends!!!! First off my buddy Sam that did all the fabrication and chassis work. His work is second to none and he really brought this car from a daily cruiser to a serious contender at any event. Gotta give a big shout out to Mike (Pablo) my painter who really made my car pop!!!!! I never imagined it would come out this good!!!What really blows me away is that this car was built in my 2 car home garage. How am I gonna drive this thing!! Im stressed out lol.:thankyou:

I love this color on a first gen. Not trying to be agreeable here, but the paint on your car is show quality, super nice. I hear you on the "how am I gonna drive it? " thought. Been there, and done that.

Thanks bro. I was thinking when I wrote that post that our cars probably were identical when they were new (Mine was Hugger Orange plain Jane) and now they are both RS Z28s with the same stance and wheels just different colors. You have excellent taste!!

I know I know the intake was made in China but I really dig the look and its in my price range. Jeff is running it and had nothing but rave reviews. I wont be racing it or adding power adders so I should be fine.

The car looks incredible! Of course you know I'm a fan of the look you went with on the car. And don't worry about the intake if that's what your budget allow and you like it then don't sweat what other people think.
