Looking for information or feedback on advangages / disadvantages of aluminum versus iron block BBC for street use. What is the weight differential on a stock iron SBC vs an aluminum BBC. Anyone have links to to info or discussion on these topics?

A complete all aluminum big block is barely north of 400 LBS. I do not know the weight of iron small blocks, but I believe it is about the same. No problem with the aluminum block on the street. They run cooler and weigh less.

I agree, if you can justify the extra $4000 or so to save 100 lbs. off the nose of your car, they are the ultimate. :hail: I want one in the worst way. No disadvantages on the street that I know of. Just the big price tag. :wow:

no disadvantage.. and BBC's still outperform most every engine out there when built right.. head flow is easily in the 400 range with streetable heads, my dream engine is a 499 or 522 all aluminum big block chevy with a crower ultralight rotating assembly, profiler heads and a kinsler injection.. but my bank doesnt feel me on this...

Should have been more specific in my original post - I believe I've got a pretty good understanding of the the pros with aluminum, from what I understand an all aluminum BBC s/b approximately comparable in weight to a SBC. I'm planning on going with an all aluminum BBC for my project and was interested in anyfeed back on potential negatives I may not have taken into consideration for this project. It is the typical PT 69 camaro with AC and 6 spd, C5 clip, and DSE quadralink 9" rear. Appreciate any feedback of links to info - Thanks in advance.

appart from having to use de-mineralized water in your coolant (which i think most of us are willing to accept)... there are no negatives.. (appart from price perhaps)

go for it i say

btw.. dont forget to post some pics!

You SHOULD use distilled water for iron blocks as well (I don't always, escpecially when I'm leaking/burning a lot of coolant...:( )
