John Parsons' 67 Chevy II will make it's public debut here at the Performance Racing Industry trade show in Orlando. Show opens tomorrow, Thursday 12/14 at 9:30AM. I have seen it and it is unreal. Low, mean and unlike anything else ever built. The fabrication is incredible.

Someone bring a decent camera and snap a picture.

Just got back from the PRI show. Met up with Frank, Michael and Andrew (The Prodigy Customs gang) - thanks for getting me in guys. Owe you some mega food when I come over and pick up the next round of parts. I looked at the new T/A wing that those guys are making for the first gen Camaro/Firebirds and let me tell you, do not even think about ordering one from Year One, NPD, Classis, etc. The one you will be able to get from GP Superstore is FAR superior. Hands down a whole level of magnitude better than what is out there now.

Saw John and II Much, which is right out in front of one of the main entrances to the show - Way to go John !!! Sweet ride for sure. You can tell that John is a perfectionist, he points out the smallest "flaws" which I would have a hard time finding with a microscope. Very clean car.

Second time I have seen Steevo, but never really got to talk. First time I saw him at Power Tour in Orlando, but I was talking to Bill and by the time I turned around to talk with Steevo, he was gone. This time we did a fly-by in one of the aisles at PRI and I walked backward and we shook hands while he was talking on his cell phone. Don't worry Steve, we will actually get hooked up one of these times and have some fun. By the way, the billet fender struts are awesome. They came in a few days ago and look killer.

Spoke with Kyle and Stacey Tucker at the DSE booth and as usual, they have great customer support and are always there with new products to feed our habit.

Anyway, just a quick update.

Actually, the car is on display just outside of the secure hall, so if all you want to do is see JP's car then come on down. You can see it w/o a badge.

It is amazing!! The more I look, the more I see! Wait till you see the chassis stiffening rods between the engine and the rad. Those parts alone are works of art. And the titanium hardware?

I would wait to see the car in person, or when the pros shoot it to decide how it "shows". Personally, I think it looks meaner than hell, but I have had the advantage of shooting John's tech articles. I had many arguments with John about the blue, but he stuck to his guns on the color, and not until I saw it in person did I "get it".

Thanks everyone! It means a lot to hear that you guys like the car. I've been working on it for over 6 years now, and I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that I'm (mostly, lol) done.

Sorry about the delay in photos, but security was tight. The guards took the "no photos except by Press" quite literally. I almost got Mike Norris' camera confiscated when I was taking pictures of my own car!

Many of you remember my first tentative technical questions, and then some of my fabrication photos, and my mistakes and corrections. It's been an incredible learning experience, and it has taken way way too much time (and money).

Most who saw it, liked it. People asked me if it was a Ford, or a Duster, or why I put such wide wheels on a drag car, or if I knew that one edge of trim was out of alignment (I did, thanks).

All in all, the best part of the show was renewing old aquaintances, and starting new ones. It's always cool to talk cars with others who care about them as much as me.

But anyway, now that the wraps are off, I can post more photos of the car. JohnU has tons of quality stuff he's taken over the past several years, and I have some stuff too.

thanks again!!!

The car is one of those colors that is going to be difficult to photo and get it to come through true. Cameras lie, printing presses lie, computor monitors lie, so it will be hard at best. It IS NOT Petty blue, as I happen to have sprayed a volume of correct Petty blue for movie cars a few years back. It is a varient of the Petty blue, but much more pastel, subtle and sinister. And it positivly IS NOT baby blue. This thing looks like anything but a babies blanket. I will be the first to say when I saw spy shots of the car I was like, UGH! What did he do! But in person it is a cool color, and a fantastic indoor show color as it does not absorb a ton of light, which is a good thing.

But then again, a car like this, a color like this, is not intended to please everyone. It would not be cutting edge if it did not piss off a few people along the way. What II Much does very, very well is go to the edge, the very edge, without falling off the side of the cliff like so many other cutting edge cars that have debut recently.

No need to defend or apologize for John's color choice. As you can see, his thought process went from the obvious choices of safe "people pleaser" shades of blue to a racy "how dare you!" final choice. One way or another, the color is designed to make people think.

The color, the wheels, the exposed hardware...all of these styling cues say: "Take your polished, shiny, filled-seam smoothster and shove it! I'm going racing." Obviously the color accomplished it's goal.

I am at the point now that shiny paint is cool and all, but show me some tricky stuff....and this one has plenty of tricky stuff.

I really like the blue, but to tell you the truth I would not care if it were pink or primer. The car and the workmanship speak for themselves.

Congrats on a great and extended build!

So are you goning to drive, show or sell it? Always the tough questions

Not sure how much you have driven it but did it turn out the way you wanted (driving wise)?

Comparing the two colors, glad you went with the one you did. It screams race, not show. Kind of a sinister look. If I was in a high horsepower car, I would be nervous if you pulled up next to me at a light...

John, I'd love to hear more about the motor. What all did you do to it? What are the specs?
Scott, it's a 427 LSx, and it was built and dyno tested by Wegner Automotive Research. They do a few street motors a year, but their main work is NASCAR Busch lease program race motors. They are also producing very cool LSx front assembly sets. They alternator, ps, and water pump setup you see on mine is manufactured at their facility in Wisconsin.

The block is a sleeved LS2, 4.125 bore. The internals are all Lunati, with a 4" crank. Wegner supplied their CNC-ported LS6 heads (Manley valves, Comp valve springs). We tried some GM, Comp, and Lunati cams on the dyno, and the best combination was the Lunati Voodoo grind. The engine made 620hp at the flywheel at 6300 rpm, with 579 TQ at 5800. It's a torque monster, with plenty of power to 7000 rpm.

Intake is GMPP's carb-style manifold (developed by Wegner and licensed to GM), with a Holley 1000 CFM throttle body. Exhaust is my original headers, though updated to 1.75 / 32 in stainless by Stainless Works.

It's a long story, but the engine management is a FAST XFI, using an eDIST and their crank decoder. Mike Norris (nee Next Level Performance) did the tuning here in Orlando.

Very nice John. I've been waiting a long time to see this completed. Major Congrats! Personally, I love the color! On my computer it reminds me of Petty blue. Last time I checked, those Petty blue cars from the 60-80's were very fast.

Super nice job! Simply Awesome!

did you fabricate the washers for the countersunk bolts, or are they available somewhere?
I would have gone insane if I had made the dozens of c'sunk washers! They are available from McMaster-Carr. I got the titanium fasteners from a place called "Coast Fabrication" who specialize in making available small quantities of mil-spec aircraft hardware to racers.

looking at the pictures (more please) i really can't find anything i would do different.

So in as few words as i can come up with.

I aspire to build something to this level one day as this car is really a work of art.

hmmm... do you know what they are called in the McMaster-Carr catalog? I have looked several times for them in the past and come up short.

Bill,

Search for pn 95481A011 on the McMaster site. That's the pn for #10 machine screws countersunk washers.

If you want to spend more money, Longacre Racing has some very very trick ones for 1/4" stuff.

what stops are you going to be making?I'm not sure of all the places I'll have the car in 2007, but I'm committed to the Eyes on Design show in Detroit in June.

I'm fairly certain I'll make the Year One in Atlanta (May), Good Guys in Columbus (July), and Run through the Hills in Tennessee (September).

John,

Can you tell us any more about this? When you say "Design Committee" are you referring from an engineer / mechanical fabricating or design meaning color and look?

I asked alot of people's thoughts on my project, some of which were good ideas, however it was my dime, my fianal decision....

This is looking more like my schedule too. All these events will be a first for me.
You can then pull me aside and show me your engineering marvels. I'm a rookie, however, I know detail!

Can you tell us any more about this? When you say "Design Committee" are you referring from an engineer / mechanical fabricating or design meaning color and look? The design committee is a group of friends that I trusted with color/texture/presentation issues. When I wasn't sure what I thought, I'd convene the design committee and we'd kick some ideas around. Sometimes they'd split on their recommendation, and sometimes they'd be unanimous in what they thought.

I'd take those ideas and incorporate them, or change them, or ignore them, but it was very very helpful to hear their opinions. Luckily, they'd tell me what they really thought, not what they thought I wanted to hear. I only trust a few people to tell me I am an idiot. :) Sometimes, I'd ignore them for awhile, and then come around to their manner of thinking. Sometimes it would work the other way around.

I started this project thinking I'd do it all myself. I've learned that's nearly impossible, and a few buddies' support can really help you build a better car.

It's funny, but I know exactly what you mean here. While niether mine nor my my father's cars are to the level of detail of you (amazing) car, and they are of a different style, maintaining a constant theme can be quite difficult. Sometimes we come up with ideas that, upon further reflection, don't mesh with the overall design we had in mind. This can be especially true when it comes to interior and paint. As an example of what I mean, a wild paint job with a stock looking interior doesn't "flow." Since each of our cars is aimed at a different design theme, what would work well on his would look out of place on mine. It can all be quite nerve racking!

You did an awsome job! Please get us some real pics asap, I need more for my screen saver!

That's one of the most intriguing parts of car building for me is the path a person takes to build their project. I truly love looking at the finished product and the levels of craftsmanship that is in this industry today - but I also greatly enjoy the back story of the design, selection, and building part of the deal too. How someone decided what to build, how to build it, what parts they chose, what engineering fore thought went into their decision and why, and I really like hearing about the struggles we all go through balancing costs, time, family, work, compromise, little garage - to big shop, tools, technique, friends help - to me (and maybe I'm just strange ??) that as much of the story as the awesome car at the show. Any one of the above items in the list will stop you dead in your tracks (especially the money part...) When you get to see the progress pics available via technologies (like this valuable site and others) and read all the back story details - you simply have to have a huge respect for those folks like John who can make it though all the perils and challenges - and STILL deliver an unbelievable car. Thanks John for the build ride - - and the car !! Thank your committee too - they done good. :hail:

I also greatly enjoy the back story of the design, selection, and building part of the deal too. How someone decided what to build, how to build it, what parts they chose, what engineering fore thought went into their decision and whyIf you guys remember, my front suspension article is written that way. And it's a credit to Johnny that it came out that way. He hated my first submission, and told me to re-write it to tell the story of how the suspension came to be. It was much easier to write (at least for me) instead of writing to make sure to plug all the manufacturers.

I've got an engine story that might be similarly interesting, but I've struggled getting the tech data right. Perhaps some day.

I'm not sure what you mean by spacers, though. On the inner fenderwells, the flat countersunk cap screws use a black countersunk washer to spread the load across as much area as possible to keep the aluminum from dimpling.

Unless you meant somewhere else, there is no spacer: just a bolt and washer.
