There are stories about cars finding you and this is one of those stories. A gentleman reached to me on Facebook 3 years ago looking for a patina 1967 Camaro like Gordan Rojewski's '67. I said I did not know of any but, I was looking for a patina '69 Camaro. He said he had one and would never sell it. Well last year he sends me a message and said he wanted to sell his Camaro. I was great, can you tell me about it. He said he had the car for about 3 years and it was on old drag car.

The car was ordered new in 1969 by Vic Hobbs. He ordered a Marina Blue SS, with a 325 HP 396 CID Engine, Black Interior, 3 speed Auto, Cowl Hood, Endura Bumper, Rear Spoiler, 4.11 gears and radio delete.

The car was raced since new and was never titled for the public road until 2007.

I was busy racing and traveling a lot last year and though the car was cool and arranged to buy it less engine and trans, because the stock driveline was long gone and I had no need to the 496 BBC that was in it.

He said no problem because it was not running anyway. We negotiated a price and he offered to deliver it to Milford, MI.

I was cool. He shows up at my house and the car was super clean and as described. The he starts dragging in all the documentation on the car. All the original build sheet, deal delivery sheet, and a ton of other docs.

I'm looking through the stuff and the documents and them look in the car. The ODO showed 1277 miles.

I'll post some photos in the links below.

Car sat unloved in the desert in CA for a few years. The car had the crazy paint job in 1969 then was re-painted in the 80s Marina Blue. This are photos of it when it made it to TN to the gentleman I purchased it from.

Cool car what's your vision with it? could use the word plan, but those change, I like the old paint from the 70's

Paint story....
My old neighbor was from Massachusetts, worked a little in FL. then retired, sells me a bunch of his old body tools, for years he did collision repair near the airport fixing rentals,

In the 60/70's he did custom paint work like on the 69 in your pictures, He showed me pictures of Chevelles Road Runners, GTX's couple of others too, all with the wild candy bubble style paint jobs, cool old pics,

The vision on this one has been all over the place.

The first plan was a stock subframe, leaf springs and a wet sump LS7. Kind of an over the fender build, quick and cheap. I struggled with the cars history and what to do with it. I couple of the past owner did just that. I am attempting to get the rest of the cars history. It is clear it has had a lot of engines, transmission and driveshafts in it. It has had a rough life.

Once we got the car to Sled Alley and really dug into the car its rough history came to light. The rust free floor pans was bent up so bad that the seat pans were bent and the transmission tunnel had a dog leg in it. After a lot of discussion with Matt at Sled Alley he convinced me the best way to get the car back straight again was a new floor pan. Crazy to cut out a rust free floor pan, but the is what we did. He convinced me it would be quicker, cheaper and better.

The next area to fix was the pop rivet “Mini Tub” job. After measuring everything up it looked like to easiest and best way to fix it was just do a full DSE Quadra Link and Mini Tub inner wheel houses. The DSE lager inner wheel wheels barely filled in the old cut outs. The Quadra Line cross member fixed the old odd shock holes in the trunk.

At this point is where my “Cheap over the fender build” went out the window. We were into a full build. Might as well fix it and make it the way I want.

I like to take my cars to the track. I love the way my old Camaros drove and looked. I’ve always been very happy how the DSE front subframe worked. So, we swapped to the DSE sub frame.

This is where the scope creep really started. Well if we are going to do a DSE chassis we should make it fully track capable.

The plan as of now:

Keep the patina paint but fix the chips and minor damage.
The car is 99% rust free
Paint the floor pans and the engine bay to look crisp and clean
Stock LS7 (Z 2/8 Spec) with faker BBC valve covers.
Air cleaner that connects to the stock hood – Stockish looking
Stock BBC Heater Box put with Vintage Air
Dry sump system
Tremec t-56
Stock looking simi-Custom Dakota Digital dash
Stoptech Brakes
Keep the stock 12 bolt
Forgeline Wheels 18X10 front and 18X12 rear
ABS
Recaro Seats

Kind of like my last builds but a little less power to keep the BBC look under the hood. I also want to try to make it quiet. I loved Apex, Gunner, Jackass and Hellfire but they are drove me nuts on long trips. Too loud. My Blazer is old man quiet. I love it for long trips. On a side note all my old cars would not pass the sound check at my local road race track (Waterford Hills) My goal is for it to pass the sound level there.

I know the drag race guys are going to hate me not keeping it a drag car, but I’m not a drag racer. We do this hobby to have fun. I’m going to build it the way I want it. I purchased the car because I loved the look of it with the patina paint, the factory endura bumper, the factory cowl hood and the rear deck spoiler. I did not really understand the history until I got it. The history is way cool but not the reason I purchased it. I’m going to fix all the cars past sins and make it better.

Sorry, but I love the look of a 1969 Camaro with 275/35R18 tires on the front and 335/30R18 on the rear. I’m going to pay homage to the history of the car by keeping the engine bay looking like a BBC and the stockish dash.

I like driving and tracking my cars so that is the way I’m going to build it.

Wow,
Thanks for sharing all those details. It sounds like it will be lots of fun when you are complete but not have to worry about the chips and door dings of a daily driver.
Again you have inspired many in the community that there are many different directions to go and in the end it's all about what makes you, the owner happy.

Thanks.... Dennis

Thanks, I have had a lot of fun doing these projects. As my wife can testify to - It is a process. Lot of small decisions that effect the final product. She is tired of hearing about it.

Obviously I like the building process or I would stop doing it. At the end of the day this is supposed to be fun.

I've always questioned the stability of those rear subframe rails, I would be tempted to build a better back half if I was replacing the floor. But then again I haven't heard of any issues with the previous builds.

This is cool Mark. I’ve always loved the tech you’ve poured into your builds…I remember following QuadraDeuce as a teenager, for instance. With your Camaros (mostly) going max-effort LS builds, a TT SBC, and a couple LT’s for good measure, why not throw a GM 632 crate in this one, for “nostalgia” and all out power as well. You could dry sump it, improve the valvetrain, and make it trackable, while being just cool as crap. Torque for days, without forced induction. My next pro touring build will have the 632 and a 6 speed. I love the LS platform (I’m a mod on LS1Tech) and build quite a few of them, but the 632 is just plain tits.

I have driven the 632 development vehicle. It is very civilized for 1000 HP. My buddy did the cal work and it idles at 850 RPM and drives nice for a 1000 HP BBC. It is a bit loud and rowdy. If you like open pipe Harley Davison motorcycle you should get a 632.

You will also need a TALL hood unless you swap to a Hogan style front TB intake. Scoggin. Dickey is testing some.

With the floor pans straightened and replaced it is time to trial fit the Detroit Speed subframe and sheet metal. Need to square things up before subframe connectors, which the car should of had back in the day.

I’ve owned and driven a large number of Powertrains now. For pure joy of driving the best package I have ever had it is the 427 LS9 built by Brian Thompson. We have beat the crap out of that combination and it just works for track, street and cross country cruising. Not a cheap date but very good. The best bang for your buck is a stock LT4. Very good linear power. Throttle response not as good, but fantastic drivability.

The 632 is pissed off. If you want to roll into the cars and coffee and have a penis measuring contest this is your clear winner. The 632 at work is very cool. My wife and neighbors are not big fans of the dual 4.5 exhaust on it need to make 1004 HP as installed. The headers are also 2 inches stepped to 2.25 BIG HEADERS. It is a Pro Street or Drag engine. That valve train and oiling system would not be happy on a autocross or a road course.

For me I always like the flexibility of a blower motor. Docile idle, easy on valve train and great throttle response. Also with the blower cars you can get away with a GOOD 3 inch exhaust system. It just pisses of your neighbors but you don’t get a letter from the HOA.

Any car that make over 900 hp the whole package is a challenge, if you want to track it. The fuel system is not a joke. The cooling system needs to be stout. The clutch, trans, driveshaft and diff all need a lot of extra attention.

Big power is big fun and big money. I’ve been playing with them for a bit.

For this car I’m starting with a 2015 Z 2/8 spec LS7. The Z2/8 program manager fixed a few critical issues with the LS7. The engine is a rock solid 525 HP in a hot rod. It should be brick reliable and very civilized. If I don’t like the 525 HP, I can yank it out and drive over to Brian Thompson’s and “fix” it.

So what car will be done first? Charley's 67 or this 69? or the 55....

With the painted firewall does that mean you are just bolting in the hyd clutch bracket?

Charley’s 67 will most likely be done first if it doesn’t get stuck in paint jail.

Still need to weld on the clutch bracket. Paint is just basically primer.

You're gonna want more power. :morepower Remember the Mule? GREAT looking car and engine package. But Charley was bored to tears as it was by far the slowest car he had lol, hence the twin-turbo project. I love the idea of N/A and the big block look, but I'd want at least another 100 hp over what you've planned, and only do it once. Just a thought from an arm chair QB... :peepwall:

Mark

I went to Brian years ago because I knew you trusted him. He built me a very solid LS7. It was nothing crazy like the 900 plus builds you've done, but naturally aspirated at 665 HP, it was pretty wild. I can completely understand why you're going the route you're going and I think it's a great idea. My car was definitely loud, to the point of being a lot of fun, but annoying. One of the best memories I had was sitting waiting in the autocross line, the starter guy says, " How big of an engine is that?" So I told him 427, and he says with a smirk, "You can tell". I definitely laughed at that. It shook the ground even at that power level. My grandpa actually raced a real ZL1 engine bought from a dealership new back in the day in a couple of dirt oval cars and he always talked about how it shook the ground wherever they went. 427 is cool no matter how you slice it.

We have been have a lot issues with noisy Ford 9 inch rear axles. We put a Ford 8.8 in another build and it is quite. I hope the 12 bolt works better also. Time will tell.

My number one question about my cars is “What is the wheel offset”? Over the years we have found it easier for the rear wheels to order the wheels then build the axle to fit. It is easier to modify the axle tube than it is to get new wheels.

I was going to use a retro wheel, but I could not get the brakes to fit. The crew at Forgeline did a lot of work to attempt to get it to work. For me form follows function. I really wanted a retro wheel but I think these look great. If I really want the old dog dish look I’ll swap the brakes to sliders and order new wheels.

1963 Z06 it was owned by Mickey Thompson and race in 1963. Not mine. It is a friend of mine that brought it to the party.

Very cool car with a ton of history.

Looks great so far!! I you assume start with a known offset and adjust from there? What brakes are you going to run on this car?

The Detroit Speed subframe works well with a 18x10 front with a 20 mm offset or 6.25 backspacing. The rear we ordered a 18x12 with the most backspacing that Forgeline could do in there forging. Off memory it as 19 mm offset 7.25 backspacing.

I think I will have 2 sets of brakes for this car. The track setup with the Brembo and Monoblock Forgeline wheel (Pictured below). To keep with look of the car I’m going to order new Forgeline OE wheels that will take poverty cap hub caps. For the OE style wheel I’ll need to run stock C6 Corvette brakes. For just cruising around the OE black steel looking wheels will work well.

Matt is back to working on my car. He cranked on it to get it to my Car Party as a roller.

The only real rust on this car was the dash at the base of the windshield. I dislike the look of the repo dash top so Matt tuned it up to look more stock.

The repo speaker grill doesn’t look right. Matt swapped the stock one back into the dash.

Yes similar set up. I had Howell make custom rotors for the back with the stock ZR1 hats.

Brakes are a personal choice. I like the Brembo stuff because I know it and I know the Brembo engineers, both on the production side and the racing side.

I know a lot of people are use a lot of other brands with no issues.

You can run “Big” or oppose piston brakes with the OE Forgeline wheel. It just pushes the center out board and make the center cap look odd.

See attached photos. The outer rim half is not very deep and IMO the center cap pushed out like this is not my preference.

Yes sir.... I've discussed this in-depth w/my No.1 car buddy & agree w/you 1000%.

I do not care for the hub cap protruding beyond the wheel lip. Yes, it's still an OE appearing set-up but that cap hanging out beyond the rim lip is too much outside of 'the look' for me.
That's what had me questioning what set-ups are compatible.

Thanks for your input.

Mark,

A couple of quick questions about that intake setup...

What throttle body is that?

Is the air cleaner base bolted between the throttle body and intake for mounting?

And finally, does it clear the fuel rails without a spacer?

I used that same intake manifold and fuel rails, and I struggled with making a Trans Am shaker base fit. Wish I had thought of this idea. Very slick! I do prefer a cable connection between the throttle pedal and TB though - not a big fan of the DBW setups in the cars I have driven. Presumably with a good tuner it shouldn't be an issue though.

The 90 mm throttle body is off a LS3/7.

The DBW set up allows cruise control, tunable throttle progression, no linkage and no idle air control motor.

With some tuning it feels good, or I’m used to it.
I also hate the feel of cables and solid mechanical linkage is problematic.

The new LT torque base engine cals do have poor throttle response. It can be calibrated to be better but not as good as the PFI cals.

We make the adapter from the stock seat pan to the Recaro seat tracks. I’ll try to find a photo.

For the sub belt we modify the seat pan to allow for it to be bolted in.

Attempting to keep it simpler. Doing the dry sump tank in the cowl is very cool, but it is a ton of fabrication. Matt and Tom did it like this on Tom’s orange 69. It looked cool and I had a stock 2008 Z06 dry sump tank laying around from an old project, so we did it that way.

This is a cruiser build and not a track monster so not worried about weight distribution.

Very cool!

Can you please show us how the tank is supported up front in the wheel well?

Also, where would you place the other tank in order to bring it back up to 10 quarts capacity?

Thanks!

The car was clean and rust free, but its life as a drag car had some wear and tear. Matt is repairing all this rag tag stuff.

Before we can finish the dry sump tank mounting the front clip needs to be on the cast and square.

Normally I’m a huge fan of caps. Posted a lot of vehicles with them over the years on here.

But for this particular car, no caps really adds to the nasty/mystery/raw look of ‘what’s this thing got under the skin’ with it being a patina car.

If it was a full paint car, then I’d prefer caps.

Yes that is a DeWitt radiator with a Spal fan. A direct bolt up radiator. It should be more than enough cooling for a stockish LS7.

The DeWitt rad is a nice part and has a more OE feel for the look I wanted in the engine bay.

Blue painted wheels were for the more 'optioned' cars. Black was for the bare bones models.
Since this one is a 'less is more' exercise, Satin Black would be my go-to.

Blue looks good with 15" wheels, but when you get more wheel and less side wall i would stick with black to hide the skinny side wall. Roadster shop was able to pull it off with this build although the front side wall looks a little skinny. I believe they are using at least a 19" in the rear. I've always liked an 18' front 19" rear stagger look for the 69

I would be worried about matching the blue closely enough that it wouldn't be obvious. But I do like the blue idea. Tough call - look forward to seeing which path you choose.

WSSix
11-25-2023, 06:13 PM
I'd try for matching the blue first as to many people are going with black wheels now. You can fall back to black if it doesn't work out with the blue. You could also try, black lips as suggested in the interim to see how that would play out.

And, I'd go with center caps so long as they'll stay on at speed.

What adapter was used for the intake that allows this packaging? I was looking into an aftermarket style body but I'm intrigued about possibly using my existing 6.0 DBW unit.

Or if you know of any other details on this I can research/investigate that you could share, it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I don’t have any data other than “looking X guessing”. I would bet the stock LS7 Camaro Z/28 Tri Y headers will make more power. The GM Powertrain team did a lot of work on those Z/28
Manifolds to get over 505 HP stock.

I have made over 800 HP with the Holley exhaust manifolds on a blower motors.

Both are good. The Holley’s fit the “look” of the engine bay better.

What I learned on the Gen 5 Camaro Z/28 program is the LS7 works better if you keep the oil cool. This Earls oil cooler maybe a tad too big put I had it on the shelf. Im also using an Innovative Eng thermostat to regulate the temp. For a cruiser I chose the 210F thermostat.

You really want to get the oil temp up to 212F to help get the water out of the oil when you are just cruising around.

Hi Mark,

Quick Question.

I am so torn with painting my Radiator and AC Condenser as I feel the paint always flakes off. Do you have any suggestions as what to use.

I’ve never had a problem, but I just had the Dutchboys paint them. Not sure on the process.

You really want to get the oil temp up to 212F to help get the water out of the oil when you are just cruising around.

Mark, in your earlier post above you mention using a 210 degree thermostat & getting the temp up to 212 to get the moisture out of the oil when cruising around, I pressume you're talking about engine temps and not trans temp?
If that's the case general question regarding engine cooling, could you set the record straight & let some of us know what the fan settings you would recommend using dual fans and a 187 degree thermostat for our street cars using LS engines putting out around 500hp, N/A, wet sump. Thanks in advance.

It is a good idea to get your engine oil temp up to above 212F to get the moisture out of it.

We did a project at work that always had very low oil temp with poor PVC. Water condensation in the engine caused rust on the rods and the valve springs. Since then I always wanted a good PVC system and hope to get the oil temp up for general cruising.

I usually do PWM fans so they ramp in. We usually turn them on at 190 and are full power at 220F. I’ll need to look at an old cal to confirm but that seems close.

I hope that answers your question.

First the Air Cleaner to give the Old School look
Second putting the coils where the wires go to
a place where a real engine had a dizzy
Finally the brackets made to hold the coil along
with his spacers he used before making the brackets

Wish the Alt and Ps brackets were more old school though

Yes I think they have the best set up right now. They use a proper Alternator with a field wire and a good power steering pump.

Every project needs a dead line. For me for this Camaro it is the Indy 500 weekend. It needs to be done so I can drive it to the track.

There is a Honda engineer that drives this 1968 Mustang “Bullet” clone. I want to park in the paddock next to him.

I was lucky enough to run into Mark at the charlotte airport last week.
I saw a guy that I thought looked like him in passing, then did a double take a few minutes later and the guy had on a corvette racing jacket. I though that has to be him...

I though about going up and talking to him, but I figured he was busy with things to do. I decided just to go up to him and find out.
Man, he is the coolest, most down to earth car guy you could meet. He instantly stood up and shook my hand. I showed him some pics of my junk, inspired by him, and we small talked for a bit, then i had to go board my plane.
