James,
You are making great progress. The car/fab and design is just awesome. One of the badest builds imo. You must be pumped. Look forward to the painted pictures even though I am little jealous

Thanks AJ,
I am debating that myself right now. My initial plan was to paint the spoiler grey and leave the splitter portion natural aluminum but we have now been considering painting the spoiler portion body color and either leaving the splitter natural or painting it grey. I think that decision will be made once the car is in color.
I'll have to take some more pictures tonight and tomorrow...

One last piece of business that we wanted to get to before paint was running the AC lines in the engine compartment. We tucked the Vintage Air bulkhead high under the passenger fender and although it was ideal for hiding the lines there, it really made getting them hooked up more of an exercise as a contortionist than a builder. Suprisingly they cooperated from the start and we were able to get all of the hoses run with a fraction of the cussing that I used during the original mock up.
We'll clean the hoses up a bit after paint but I think we were able to run them with minimal clutter.

Well, it's been two and half years since we started on the '67 and we are finally in the paint booth this weekend. Yesterday was dedicated to the last of the clean up after it's final wet sanding:

and we got the car masked for paint... unfortunately, as is usually the case, my camera battery died after the first couple of pieces:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/masking%201.JPG
It's masked now and Chris just wanted to spend a bit more time on the hood (the carbon fiber has proven a challenge to get ready for paint) and give the trunk lid one final pass before starting the paint. Of course today is the hottest day of the year so he was thinking about starting a little later in the day to make the process a bit more bearable.

Chris started painting this morning after a final day of masking and prepping yesterday. The day started off with 5 coats of base applied with all of the body parts in their proper location to minimize variations in the metallic and ensure consistency over the entire car.

We’ll give the paint a day and then the wet sanding and buffing will begin. With five passes of wet sanding and three rounds of polishing there is another 40 hours of work before we start reassembly.

Paint code/color please?
Ty, the paint is a custom mix based off of a BASF Glasurit color-max code. I can try and get you close (at least the base code) but my suggestion would be to find a Glasurit dealer and go through their color wheels for an hour or two. We sprayed out a couple of header panels a couple of times before we found exactly the color that I wanted and I would recommend that everybody do the same.
James,
Will the car be ready to race for the 2009 one lap race?
It should be. We are probably six weeks away from having the car together and on the road. Hopefully we can string together a few track days and have the car reasonably dialed in for May. A better question would be "will the driver be ready"?

Chris is nearly finished the wet sand and polish, with just over 50 hours into the body at this point. That includes five passes of wet sanding ending at 2500 grit and three round of polishing. With the body now unmasked we are working on the final assembly.

Thanks guys,
Obviously this is a really cool part of the build as everything comes back together and it starts to look and feel like a car again. This week has been a bit of a roller coaster though... even though the car has been more or less completely mocked up twice so far, we had a bunch of little stuff bite us at the begining of the week; mostly basic reproduction parts that don't fit or work right (what a shock). Dumb little things like the (reproduction) push buttons for the (original and rechromed) door handles that aren't cooperating or the feeling that you get when you open your box of door locks and find the trim rings on each and every one of them damaged in some special way. Fortunately (knock on wood) I think that we are back on track again with everything coming together nicely.
What a kick ass car!! A ton of innovative ideas and parts I keep checking out. Attention to detail is awesome. For starters - that core support IMO just does it. Look forward to seeing to come togther.
Brent
Thanks Brent, we spent a lot of time on parts like the rad support and inner fenders trying to do something a little bit (or a lot) different but keep it looking like the factory could have done it that way. It's a difficult balance but I am happy with the way that it all has come together.
Thanks again,
James
Like everyone else is saying, this is one badass car. I love the attention to detail in both form & function. Can't wait to see the final assembled pics.

Well we are working hard on getting the car together and are making more and more headway every day.
On Monday we were fortunate enough to borrow some awesome new scales from the guys at Tunerworks in Calgary, AB. We used the wireless Longacre scales to corner weight the car for a baseline to get the Penske shocks blueprinted next week:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/sept%2008/Sept%2015.JPG
James OLC
09-19-2008, 09:20 PM
Once we were done with the scales, we sent the car to the upholstry shop to get the carpet, headliner, and trunk finished up while we wait for the rest of the interior to come together. He finished up with the car this morning and did a nice, clean job.
The trunk was simple and efficient, I wanted to maintain a (modern) factory like finish and think that it hit the mark:

The headliner is obviously a little more difficult to show but here it is. We started with a seriously flawed piece from TopShop that needed to be extensively reworked. Although the entire process was more hassle than we had hoped, the finished product came out well.

Littlefuse and I-Squared have provided one of their increadible new ISIS power distribution/management systems for the car. The kit is increadibly complete and represents the absolute state of the art for wiring and control. I will be posting the step by step install of the system on the forums and with more detail on our wbsite as the installation goes forward over the next week. For now here are a couple of sneak peaks at the ISIS kit:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/sept%2008/ISIS%201.JPG
The heart of the ISIS System is the Mastercell which acts as a control hub for all of the downstream functions in the car. The programmablity of the Mastercell gives the entire system increadible power as it allows for multiple switches to control individual loads (like electric fans) and car incorporate soft starts for loads like Halogen or projector lights.
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/sept%2008/ISIS%202.JPG
A single Mastercell can control up to five "Powercell" modules which is the muscle behind the Mastercell brain. CAN bus technology connects the Powercells to the Mastercell and reduces both the quantity of wiring required as well as the time needed for the installation.

We did a little bit of a cleanup in the engine compartment yesterday, replacing the factory fuel rails with a pair of billet rails. Like most of their parts, they came anodized bright red which was a little too bright for my taste so we had the rails sent to Pacific Coast Anodizing in Fresno, CA to be stripped and recoated in Black Hardcoat. Rodger from Ironworks was kind enough to check on them while they were there (or something like that) and they came out great...
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/fuel%20rails%202.JPG
in addition to tidying things up a bit, they will alllow us to ... try some different intake combinations ... not that I would be tempted to do something like that...

Chris also got done polishing the hood. The carbon fiber proved to be really challenging to get to paint quality but, as with everything else on the car, Chris put in an awesome effort and got it as smooth and straight as the rest of the car...
Edit - pics deleted
The underside will get one more coat of clear - most likely a semigloss - on the natural carbon tomorrow.
Edit/update - the hood will just not cooperate and, unfortunately, will not make it onto the finished product... darn

Yes it is an Anvil hood, but it's a very early version - I got it about this time last year. They may have made some changes since then.
Chris did the hood as well as the rest of the car. You've got my number, feel free to have Dick call me any time. He might not like what I have to tell him but I am sure that he is up to the task.
Hopefully we get a chance to see them side by side some time.

Should be this week my friend - barring any unforeseen problems. I'm taking the better part of the seek off to work on wiring, assembly, and to get it running. If you can drag yourself away from the store for a while you should come out. Give me a call if you have time.
I'll see you this week for sure! Thanks.

Ok... so it wasn't "one more" coat of clear... it was four more coats. Coupled with the previous six coats of clear that Chris laid down earlier there are a total of ten coat on the natural carbon fiber underside of the hood. The four today are have a semigloss finish similar to all of the grey used on the rest of the car. The first six coats were needed to clean up some irregulaties in the cowl assembly.
Edit - pics deleted
We'll finish up some details underneath tonight and then set the hood aside until it goes on in a couple of weeks.
Edit - forget what I said about the hood. It's not working out and we're going to have to start from scratch with an NOS hood... darn

We also made some great headway on the wiring... we built the rear wiring harness and spotted the ISIS power fuses and rear Powercell...

http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/sept%2008/isis%20install%207a.jpg
Tomorrow we'll be working toward locating the Powercell for the front harness and the Mastercell which provides the control for the two Powercells. I hope to have an update on the webpage documenting the install up in a couple of days. The more I explore the potential of the ISIS System the more impressed I am with it's capabilities. We'll also be programming the Push Button Start "personality" once we have everything together.

Its been a busy week and we have made some great headway on the assembly. We are just about done the wiring using the ISIS system - the front and rear Powercell boxes are in place and the wiring for all of the external systems is in place:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/ISIS/isis%20install%2011.JPG
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/ISIS/isis%20install%2014a.JPG
You can see the step-by-step installation on the OneLapCamaro website here - ISIS Intelligent Multiplex System Installation (http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/isiswiring.html).
In addition to the wiring we have been making great progress in and out of the car. The new dash has arrived - we fitted it yesterday and finalized the installation today. Tomorrow we'll work at getting the Vintage Air vents and controls mounted and as soon as the Racepak dash arrives we'll get the instrument cluster together.

How long till the electrical system is live? I would love to know your opinion on the system once it's running. I have been looking at it for a while but I'm a little eeeery about facing the gremlins, if any. very interesting system.

It should be powered up tomorrow or Saturday at the latest. The real world caught up with me a bit this week and I wasn't able to put in the time that I wanted on the wiring but change tomorrow.
One of the many things that I like about the ISIS System is that, if anything, the gremlins will be easier to deal with given the systems smart diagnositic capabilities. One of the other things that I like is that the switching side into the Mastercell is via grounds and not hot wires. Saves some wear and tear on switches and eliminates a bunch of hot wires under the dash.
I'll keep you posted when we start running power to some of the loads.

It's been a long couple of weeks and we have been making lots of progress but at this point there are some things that will have to wait.
What I can share is some of the good and bad that we have been dealing with as we try to get everything together...
The ISIS System has been powered up and, I have to tell you, is very impressive. The rear Powercell is complete and fully functional -
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/ISIS/isis%20install%2017.JPG
and is being controlled by the front mounted Mastercell control box. The diagnostic ablilities are awesome and make the system very easy to deal with. We fabricated a hinged mount for the Mastercell beneath the dash to give us easy access; I'm getting too old to contort myself like a pretzel to get under the dash -
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/ISIS/isis%20install%2019.JPG
Which we have been laying out -
pics? - nope
Despite all of the complexities that I had heard about Racepak dashes in the past, the new IQ3 seems to have solved many of the complications. Despite having some difficulties at first, once we had all of the pieces that we needed it was very straight forward.
On the down side, we had to start working on a new hood. I stole the NOS hood off my wifes '67 (if I don't start working on it soon there won't be a lot left of it) and Chris started stripping it.
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/sept%2008/nos%20hood%201.JPG
Unfortunately, our carbon hood had a couple of problems that we just could not overcome. Fortunately, the steel hood is almost perfect -
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/OLC_pics/sept%2008/nos%20hood%204.JPG
It should be in paint by the end of the week.

I'm a little slow getting to stuff on here but just stumbled across this today. I would have to say this is My new absolute favorite car. This thing encompasses almost every idea I've had for My car over the last five years it has been apart and I couldn't afford to do. The attention to detail is just jaw dropping.
For what it's worth You should love the Toyo R888's. I've been running those this season on My STi for autocross. Very sticky, very consistent and quite durable. I've run a dozen events this year (won My regional Street Mod championship) and the tires are only 25% worn. The closest thing I can compare them to are the kuhmo V700 Victoracers only even more consistent. Great tires.
Once again though.............absolutly awesome car. :hail: :hail:

So what do you think of all your parts choices?
It's early - I will be the first to admit that I haven't been able to fully appreciate the potential of alot of the components at this point but I can say this:
1. The American Touring Specialties - Lee Engineering power steering box is one of the single most impressive upgrades that I have done. I would (and will) recommmend it to anyone and will certainly use one again on my nect build.
2. The Katech Street Attack LS7 is a beast.
3. The ATS Chicane front subframe is awesome. I have had a couple of dozen first gens and I never knew that the front subframe could perform this well.
4. The IQ3 dash is a bit complicated but has a ton of potential and the logging abiliiltes make it a great tool.
5. The Vintage Air heater works really well.
There are lots of other things but those are the standouts right off the top...

I don't know Rodger - I doubt it - I was trying to pay attention to a bunch of other things and it was snowing lightly at the time. ;)
We're busting our humps to get the car ready; hopefully it lives up to it's potential. There are still some bugs to work out and some rough edges to smooth out be we have almost 80 hours before we leave...

He's a guy that is truly and rightfully proud of an amazing car. We've all seen some killer stuff done here but honestly the attention to detail is none stop on this 67. It's one of those cars that you can look at all day and never find a flaw or and over looked item. Not one of the pictures you've seen do the car justice! If it gets rolled out side tomorrow I'll try and get some High Res photos and post. Best part is James has no intention of making it a trailer queen.

To Curtis and everybody else who stopped by ATS yesterday - it was truly a pleasure to meet all of you and take some time to talk about our cars. One of the things that I really appreciate about this hobby is the people that you meet and the friends that you can make before, during, and after a build. I am glad that the '67 was well received, it's been three years of hard work by many people and when you build something like this in a vacuum sometimes you can lose your way despite your best efforts.

We can swap using the GoPro camera for track time.. just go buy a 1 or 2 gig SD memory card.
Well, she is sort of sorted out.. I made a ton of changes, but she feels pretty good so far. Friday night we will bolt on the larger sway bar and that should help as well.
You car is freaking amazing and you should be very proud of what you built.

Are you going to run some sort of an "air intake"? Or, do you think that K&N will be good enough?

Thanks for all of the kind words, I am really happy with how the car is now (notice that I didn't say anything about it being finished)...
Someone mentioned to me today that I hadn"t posted any interior pictures. The show is not the perfect place for interior shots but here id one that's not bad but still does not do the new Marquez Design dash justice:

It was great to talk with you today James. The car is bad-ass. I wish I could hang around on Saturday to lend a hand.
Good luck. Remember, too much use of the go pedal will slow you down, it's all about the line, listen to Mary, and have fun.

Body bushings are global west pieces that we stripped and painted. Blake at SpeedTech has some great bushings as well that I probably would have gone with if they had been available at the time.

So... one of the things that showed up on the post race inspection after 'Vegas was some differential fluid that pushed out the vent and past the woefully inadequate filter that I had been using. I had expected problems there but at that point in time hadn't found a solution that I felt I could depend on (and by depend on, I mean something that I could have in the trunk that wouldn't stink up the entire car while properly doing it's job).
Fortunately I decided to give Mike Norris (Norris Motorsports) and John Parsons a call after seeing their new fuel breather on Steve's car. After a bit of discussion they came up with a clean, simple, and (hopefully) effective solution that I just about have installed and plumbed...
The basic components of the kit as supplied is the breather itself and a tidy billet mounting clamp:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/diff%20breather%202.jpg
When the breather cannister is dissassembled you can see that this is more than just a simple vented catch can:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/diff%20breather%203.jpg
Drain holes allow what differential fluid is collected to gravity drain back into the differential while at rest:

To complete the installation, you need to supply your own AN hardware and hose, as well as a small breather (I used a K&N). For hardware I needed a 1/4" NPT plug and two -6AN to 1/4" NPT 90 degree fittings. I have used Earls Ano-Tuff fittings throughout the OLC build but, unfortunately, none were available locally (one of the joys of trying to build something like this in the great white north) so I grabbed some traditional fittings from my stock to get things together for now - I'll change them out later.
First a plug for the extra/optional vent outlet, in an ideal world this wouldn't be here but it is and it's not much of an inconvenience:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/diff%20breather%205.jpg
I used 90 degree fittings top and bottom to mimimize height (and save a bunch over 90 degree hose ends). The "in" and "out" are clocked at 90:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/diff%20breather%206.jpg
James OLC

The recommended mounting of the breather is for the "in" port to allow a straight drain back to the differential; obviously the whole assembly needs to be above the differential at all times. Since trunk space is at a premium in the OneLapCamaro, I fabricated a bracket on the back of the rear bulkhead "Y" supports (behind the upholstry) which puts the breather well out of the way:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/diff%20breather%207.jpg
I have two large rubber grommets for the remote reservoirs which I am using to pass the line from the differential through up into the trunk. On the input side it will be a straight shot into the breather, on the "out" side which will terminate with the K&N filter I ran a line across the trunk, and out on the other side:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/diff%20breather%208.jpg
Unfortunately, I ran a touch short of -6 hose and will have to wait until Monday to finish this up...

Steve, what happens at the end of the hose that goes threw the floor? Is there a filter to help with smell? Is there any odor when using this system? That's one thing that I just can't have...smelly garage!

Anthony,
Exactly right. Put a K&N crankcase breather filter on the other side of the bulkhead fitting and you won't have any gas smell (from there anyway).
If you still use Russell or Earl's flex line that doesn't have a teflon liner, then your fuel lines will permeate (and eventually fail). But that's a whole other story. :)

Right now it just goes through the floor and ends. I haven't noticed a gas smell but I have one of them little K&N filters to put on there just in case.
For my application I need to John to make me one about two inches shorter but this just fits in this location. The best part is that no gas exited the car during the Optima event. Great design.

Hey Steve,
Pick a two week period when your car is down and send that vent/baffle back to me. I'll cut two inches (or however much you want) out of it and send it back.

Quick question, I had major fuel slosh exit the filler cap on my ricks tank at the RTTH 1/8 miles drags. I was running the car with the vent system capped off. If I vent the system I'll assume without the pressure build up this should not happen, after all the cap has a negetive psi checkvalve and one would assume fuel should not leave the cap at all.

I had that problem, went to a new cap, and made sure it was tight after each fill up. I also had a fuel door installed in the neck. It helps, but does not help if you have a bad cap.

For the fuel tank vent I stuck with the stock vented cap (for now) and plumbed the vent outlet on the Rick's tank back up to the filler tube:
http://www.onelapcamaro.com/build/diffbreather/fuel%20vent.jpg
If need be I can reverse it in the future to a more "pro-active" vent like JP's.
