Bought a nice orig paint 65 Riviera, sent it to Sled Alley, Roadster Shop chassis, Brian Thompson 427 like in Hellfire. 4L80E. Matt and my idiot friend Stielow are figuring out how to make it all work while keeping it orig paint and interior. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/cd06a1cf65023a52db2377c58e1fceef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/26d5295468c96363076b8bd223ee655c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/3224f972c78bf56cb717e83e39e7723a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/95394ee08f062d7d3479e487894dfcde.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/527d6c29532c1b0105d5080da13b87b0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/f8c986c9013e171bb22a0640fc3a215e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/a59027131ab98af4c960ff7ca09aa4c6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/84629803c119629aa45808752feb8089.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/de1f3ed0ede26aa98673cd35b820e88e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/b90d9e6db4b94a52492cb886876798e0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/50941e01813aa633520d63b5d7874526.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/8a32a3fdba3c9916fd976474f93e543b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/5d9ba73be63eb191aed56fd18c99d79d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/efdbd3863232005fe13aea47bf5da9be.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180130/d1cd464108f38b0a5b788b1b62819ea5.jpg

Absolutely love the early Rivs! What classic lines.
This will be such an awesome touring car. Hmmm....Hellfire & this animal in the garage? Or is this for GW to use on the tours?
Wonder if NOSLORIV will fit on a Cali plate? I guess not.

Only thing is yours requires more money to treat that the rest of us.

I love the '65s - I will admit I let one sit and rust out. I got it with a '67. The '67 had a Title and the '65 didn't. I was going to take the front clip and make a El Riviera but never did.

As my boys would say “that’s dope”. Not only is everything tucked up into the frame (I’m assuming) but the floor has been dropped which makes things nice and roomy for a normal sized, 6’+ person to be comfortable.

As the interior goes back together are you sticking with a stock styled layout and patterns with upgraded materials?.....hint, the answer should be yes.

Looking good CL!

Hello,

Joined just to follow this (and the referenced older Riviera builds) since I've been working on my own less dramatic '64 Riviera project. I've also been relaying the pictures to the Riviera Owners Association board (http://forums.aaca.org/forum/73-buick-riviera-riviera-owners-association/). We'd like to know if you weighted the original frame and floor pans and then the replacements?

Also here's my suggestion for wheels, though the Rushforth Salt Shakers are very good looking.

Budnik Muroc III's though with a blacked out web vs. the matte web shown. Any of the Muroc's look a lot like the original road wheels but I think the III's have the best balance of features vs. the II or the IV.

Thanks for the welcome. See below for the thread, the welcome a guy foreboded and how Charley is handling it.

http://forums.aaca.org/topic/306292-aftermarket-chassis-in-a-65-riviera/
hope he has some thick skin. As you saw, not much tolerance for anything modified here.

Hello all. Im the guy with the project riv. No we did not weigh anything for before and after. Yes i started with a nice car because the end result is always better that way. I did not have the heart to modify a gs though. I don't plan on doing any autocross or racing, just driving it. I usually do hot rod power tour and also do good-guys tours. These tours are usually 1500-2000 miles. Having something with a modern drivetrain makes these tours alot more fun. The engine is the same as i have in a camaro and it makes over 900 hp and tq on 93 octane. In the camaro i get between 17-20 mpg with the ac on. The ls engines are so good it makes road trips much less stressfull. I used to always be watching gauges etc. Now they are a non issue. Yes a stock riv will cruise just fine but won't perform how i want it to. My friend mark stielow is babysitting the project. If you google him you will see he is one of the top ride and handling engineers at gm. My plan is to keep the orig. White paint and black interior. I believe the orig drivetrain will go to a friend that wants to drag his dads 63 riv out of a junkyard and get it together to give his dad a ride in it.

I do appreciate stock condition cars also. Here is my 66 Bonneville...

Looks like he's jumped into the fray... I'm also CTX-SLPR over there. Obviously it's his car and he can do what he wants with it and I for one appreciate where he's going with the build. I've got my questions on some of the choices and am VERY interested to see how he puts the interior back in with the radically different floor pan setup.

The comments over there are priceless -- and just as I had expected.... I'm sure he'll watch his gauges from now on! LOL

I stopped restoring mid year Corvettes because of this very same "attitude".... Even though I won Top Flight awards - had many of them (one 28K mile original) - had been driving them since 1970.... and if you laid a bolt on a table - I could probably identify it...... but the people that judge them - and many that own them - just really aren't "car people" -- they are brand / year specific and nothing could possibly be more blasphemous than wanting to change ANYTHING.

I thought about posting some pics of Lillards "garage" --- with a few of his cars in there -- but it wouldn't change any minds - and my guess is - they'd start posting comments about whatever it was they saw that wasn't something they liked. Frankly -- to me -- this relates to my above comment about being "car guys" -- car guys appreciate anything automotive - I personally love a 1927 Cadillac as much as I love a hot rod. If it's on wheels and has a motor -- there's something cool about "it" whatever "it" is. Sad to me when the keyboard warrior in people comes out and all they can comment on is something negative.... I always envision that person as some "shut in" barely functioning and lonely....

Very true! I've stopped reading and contributing to several other sites due to the attitudes of certain members. Some are so negative and set in their ways they can't just enjoy another person's idea of perfection - even if it isn't what they would have done.

My attitude: if it is gasoline powered, has wheels or has something to do with things that are gasoline powered and have wheels I'll probably find something I like about it. :)

Lateral G is the only car site I attend. There’s more pissbuckets and moped riders on other sites who are only there to criticize. The builds here are amazing along the lines of “when I grow up I want to be them”, but also the guy in his garage, scraping to get his ride done as best as he can...he gets cudos too. That, is what I appreciate most about Lateral-g.

Now guys... obviously there are those on there that don't appreciate that people want the ride to move on while keeping the classic styling and if you read that thread you can pretty plainly see who has a general problem with that. The whole LS motor and oil pressure thing is something I've heard before just from putting a gerotor style oil pump from an L67 Series II 3800 on my classic 4.1L V6 from other Buick engine boards...

However the banter I'm seeing here isn't much better however. Some people don't want to advance the cars handling, part of the charm is the way it worked then and still does now. Don't feed the trolls and enjoy the folks that do like the build, or at least can appreciate it even if some of the choices are questionable to them (I don't particularly care for non-Buick engines and despite the power of the LS9, I'm bored of LS swaps in stuff from when there was a brand identity to engines). Lets not make this the billet vs. the rat rod antagonistic relationship and please keep the updates going on both sides (or I'll keep pushing stuff over).

I agree Jim, we are all about modded cars on Lateral-G, not stock ones. Charley has both numbers matching and highly modified cars, and everything in-between. He actually has more stock numbers matching cars than he does pro-touring and modded cars. But this site was started for those who love the looks of the older muscle cars, but wanted the improvements that modern technology offers. In my opinion, the modded cars (done right) are FAR more fun to drive.I can appreciate the stock stuff too, but that's not where my passion lies.

Good Sir, I'll say what I please 3 posts in or 300, as I mentioned I came over here because I was interested in this build as it parrellels my own less radical one and I'm not going try and hold my opinion because of a low post count no more than I would expect a more seasoned member would be expected to do so. I'm hardly some semi-anonymous new person and have used this user name on many boards including Bangshift.com and Pro-Touring.com beyond the ROA board.

I think y'all are missing the point. You probably should go read what I actually have said on the ROA board and take what I wrote here in context. My point is that making fun of the way that guys that have a different direction on their building of a car and expecting them not to do the same is rather near sighted. Let those that want to enjoy congratulating the guy who found the last set of NOS battery terminal clamps do their thing. Ignore the trolls, that get on my nerves too by the way, and lets keep it respectful where we can. Other than the obviously bizarre LS oil pressure thing, I think Charley has been rather well received by the general populace over there who aren't the usual trolls who show up on my threads too or make snide references to me in others threads.

On to something a bit more personal in terms of why I'm here and what I think about Charley's build.
I have made no gross complaints about his choice on engine, I wouldn't have made it and I stand by what I said about my tastes and desires. It doesn't take an LS to make power though it's probably the most cost effective way currently going. I am about integrating modern technology and upgrading suspensions and am doing so on my numbers matching '64 Riviera. I wouldn't call a 256cid Buick Turbo6 with an L67 EFI system driving a 4L80E being all that obsessed with keeping things stock or classic. You can imagine how much flack I got/get for having a V6 in virtually all circles. I don't have Charley's resources so having been building this slowly over 14yrs which means that my once reasonably modern engine is now fading into a bit more obsolescence. Charley's is actually going to look more stock than mine most likely with the hood closed and I don't mind that at all. I've not the time (full time job, volunteer work, a family, and a car that I'm building) to have made a big post on my project so I'll link my Bangshift.com build on it and come back here sometime later with a local build page that cuts quite a bit of the evolutionary nature of the build thread out: Project Franken-Riviera -1964 Buick Riviera- (https://www.bangshift.com/forum/forum/bangshift/project-cars-update/2174-project-franken-riviera-1964-buick-riviera)

Also please do your research as to what I've said as an individual. With that I am done with any direct interaction on the subject. Good luck with trying to recover your father's 63 Riviera from the junkyard and that is not a condescending swipe, I genuinely mean it.

Well.................this got off track. Any new pics Charley?I heartily agree...

With the original seats sitting up on a hump in the floor that was unequal inside to out, are you going build riser mounts to get them to sit at the same height as original? Are you going to customize the foam under the covers to give a bit more lateral support? I find the stock seats a bit flat and slidey even with the original suspension.

And where did I say that I was looking down on him for making it? I said my opinion as an example of we aren't all after the same thing but can appreciate a build. Like you point out if I ain't paying for it, I don't really get a vote on it. My point was on the forum members insulting each other over having a different opinion and both sides were guilty of that and I'd rather not get grouped in with behavior I'm conteously not trying to be part of. I meant no disrespect and until I hear Charley tell me he took it that way I'm at peace with my conduct.

Can we please drop this and get back to the car? I'm rather weary of being taken the wrong way on a subject where I was one of the few to come to Charley's defense in the Riviera world. Go tell me I'm wrong for a V6 in my own build thread: http://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php?t=56282

So I went back and reread what I have said and I do need to offer an apology. When I was trying to make a point that there are people who like the car but make different choices with what they would have done I got a bit too personal and got wrapped up in defending myself so it does look like I'm being adversarial.

When I was a kid I used to make fun of people's choices on cars or stance or any other mods if I didn't like it or care for it. My dad said something to me at a car show when he heard me making comments that I will never forget.

He said "son, always remember, there's an ass for every seat. whether you like it or not doesn't matter because its not your ass in that seat. If you don't like it keep your mouth shut, have respect, and when you get the chance, then make it how you like it."

I still have my likes and dislikes but I have learned to respect what makes this industry go round and that is different styles and flavors no matter your tastes.

GregWeld

I used to walk around car shows with a buddy --- he was very unknowledgeable -- but during the course of time I had shown him what "I" look at -- glass smooth bodywork -- fit and finish -- door gaps -- wiring -- stance.... I took the time to discuss these things because he wanted to know and was planning to re-do his own hot rod.

Then -- he started to walk around to point out the CRAP he saw..... he'd walk clear across the lawn (or whatever) and make a beeline to something he saw that he thought was nasty. He asked me why I didn't go with him..... and I told him --- I'm not the judge of someone else's work - or budget - or talent - or taste.... and if I had nothing nice to say then what was the point etc. I went further to point out that when I'm looking around someone's car -- I'm trying to LEARN something from what they did.... not to question WHY they did what they did etc.

I think this is why I dread hanging out at car shows. You sit there in your chair and listen to the dumb s****T people have to say or "espouse" what they know about this or that.

I find when I'm just out cruising my own stuff --- I have a big smile on my face and I can't hear the dumb stuff.... and I'm happy. LOL

1965 Riviera Headlamp Visors

“Perhaps the most notable styling update for the 1965 Buick Riviera was its concealed headlights. Mounted vertically behind ribbed grilles on the leading edge of each front fender, the grilles were split in half, and opened like a clamshell when the headlight switch was turned on. The top section retracted upwards and back, and the bottom section retracted downwards and back to expose the beams. The process was reversed when the headlights were turned off.

A single electric motor, mounted near the center of the grille, rotated two horizontal links that opened the shields. In a perfect world, the system was well designed and worked as intended, but in the real world sometimes there were problems. In fact, on December 11, 1964, E.J. Hresko, the Technical Service Manager for Buick released a Service Information Bulletin to all Buick Dealers instructing them to make sure all mechanics knew how to manually operate the headlamp visors, so the car could be driven until repairs could be made. See 1965 Riviera—Manual Operation of Headlamp Visors [link opens in new window] for details.

There's little doubt that the public loved the new headlamp visors, but during one of the first public showings of the new 1965 models, Buick officials overhead concerns from several prospects. Comments like, "I wonder how the Riviera headlamps will operate after being subjected to ice, snow, mud, etc." This was certainly an important consideration for folks in parts of the country where heavy snow and ice storms are an accepted part of the winter months. Buick felt these concerns were a normal reaction to something so new, and anticipated similar comments throughout the 1965 model year.

In a press release, Buick Division stated that the Riviera visors had been thoroughly tested and were designed to operate satisfactorily even under the most adverse conditions. Additional information was provided to all dealer personnel so that they could be prepared to reply to concerns such as the one noted above. This information included the following facts:

During the development of the 1965 Riviera, the headlamp visors were subjected to freezing rain, ice, slush and snow, and in no case was a failure experienced due to those conditions. The test vehicles were driven in slushy snow to pack as much around the visors as possible. The cars were then parked and exposed to temperatures of zero degrees. After allowing 12 hours to pass in an attempt to freeze the visors shut, the visors were tested and found to operate as designed without exception and without any difficulty whatsoever. Buick felt this represented the worst possible conditions a Riviera would be exposed to during its lifetime.
But that wasn't good enough for Buick. In a deliberate attempt to create conditions more harsh than Mother Nature herself, Buick manually directed a spray of water on the visors under frigid temperatures to build up as much ice as possible on the visors. At temperatures below zero, ice was packed approximately 1/8" thick all over the visor by directing a flow of water horizontally on the visors. Conditions such as this would rarely occur in nature. Under these man-made conditions alone, Buick was able to stick the visors closed. It was determined that only a light tap of the hand on each visor was required to break the ice loose, and allow the visors to operate.
The same test vehicles were exposed to long periods of natural freezing rain, and no failures were noted under those conditions.
The Riviera headlamp visors were designed to be protected by the fender, which explains their being recessed inward far enough to eliminate malfunction due to ice and snow.
Multiple test cars were driven through mud baths at the General Motors Proving Grounds, and even with a heavy build up of mud covering the visors, they still operated satisfactorily without a single failure.
Buick noted that other manufacturers had experienced failures with concealed headlights, but their design differed from the Riviera in that the covers were not protected from above.
In the same December 11, 1964 Service Information Bulletin mentioned above, it was noted that if the headlamp visors fail to open when the lights were turned on, it was important to leave the lights on for a minute to allow time for the visor motor circuit breaker to close. This circuit breaker was designed to protect the motor in case one of the visors somehow jammed. Once the obstruction was identified and removed, the breaker would reset itself and close after about one minute.

Of all General Motors vehicles for 1965, only the Riviera and Corvette featured concealed headlights. However, this feature would become more popular through the end of the decade, and would be introduced in 1966 on the new Oldsmobile Toronado and from Dodge on its new Charger. In 1967, the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Grand Prix, and Cadillac Eldorado expanded GM's use of concealed headlights, and other manufacturer's followed suit, such as the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar. For 1968, concealed headlights were even optionally available on the Chevrolet Caprice!

More models came onboard for 1969, but their popularity was already in decline, as some models dropped them for 1969 (Cadillac Eldorado), and others followed suit for 1970 (Buick Riviera, Oldsmobile Toronado). During the seventies, they were most frequently seen on luxury cars such as the Lincoln Continental (1970-1979) and on the Imperial by Chrysler (1969-1975). The Continental Marks continued to feature concealed headlights through the 1984 model year, but only the Oldsmobile Toronado used them in later years (1986-1992).”

Its not in the most recent Riviera owners magazine but here's a thread on a new replacement system that was a bit less Rube Goldberg electrically if you're interested Charley: http://forums.aaca.org/topic/216771-1965-buick-riviera-new-replacement-clam-shell-headlight-motors-now-available/ He offered a model that worked linked to the headlight switch and one with an override as well (I really liked that feature on my '65 Gran Sport I had briefly). I'd see if he's still making them, last mag I can find with it in there was just June '17

Also Steve Lorenzen ([email protected], 502-817-8761) and Dick Sweeney ([email protected], 619-806-3255) offers repair services on the motors. The linkages are typically what makes them get out of sync or sag.

I still suggest you join the ROA, lots of good stuff and resources even if the forum has it's curmudgeons.

Didn't notice that earlier on. This really is becoming a unibody type vehicle, probably since the car is designed to be so low anyways and unless you stuck to just the original body mounts (which have nothing out in the rocker areas) it would be hard to replicate.

Mind getting a measurement for me? How far up from the bottom of the rocker are the discs for the rocker mouldings? I'm adding them to my car and I have the discs but no measurement of how far up they are.

Thanks and keep up the cool build!

Matt had fun kinda repeating the pattern that is on the bottom side of the hood. Radiator floats on rubber cushions top and bottom.

This isn’t done yet?

I’m sure you’ll get tired of hearing “I had one just like that”. I think I’ll buy the one I sent you the picture of, put the same Rushforth’s on it and put “clill” on the plates.

Is that an ABS motor I spy on the frame rail next to the heat exchanger pump?

Is the pump for the intercooler?

Will the ABS be driven by the donor computer setup?

Yes the pump is for the intercooler. The ABS setup is a Bosch system that is stand alone and fully programable

I have a Bosch 2U 3-channel system in a box for eventual integration into my Riviera off of a 94 Impala SS.

I regret selling the 3 Rivieras that I owned whilst living in California, but I'm determined to own another down here one day.

Very tastefully done, world class fab by Sled boys..
BUT ...... this detail is upside down :patriot:

Nessy ----- he should have just turned the whole project over to you and I to manage.

I personally would find a way to "highlight" those floors with some kind of "rubber" mat and carpet.... or something that would contrast without showing scuffing (from his size 20's) a sort of yin/yang thing - hard and soft - flat and textured.....

Ns RS
05-17-2018, 09:55 PM
Matte cleared or light painted cream non dynamat floors & exposed trans tunnel also matte cleared or light painted cream - aluminum/rubber panel/driver/passenger foot rests and custom black leather floor mats.

Kinda like this Singer/gussied up 911 cup interior or (recoil ring chevelle sans skeletal airline seats) but where everything you see brown (in porsche pic) is black instead and everything you see blue is matte cleared bare metal or painted light cream (keeping original riv black seats of course)

Sure it’ll be hot, but really cool. At every stop just lift the leather floor mats and count the ooohs and aaahs.

Damn shame to dynamat and carpet that metal work. I'm sure magoo will still screw up wheel choice tho...

Is 3/8" enough with carpet and padding?

clill
05-19-2018, 10:57 AM
3/8" side clearance to the tunnel. Carpet and pad won't make any difference.
