Hey guys, well I'm back with something completely different. This time its not about speed, power or even show car quality ... its all about COOL. This one I'm building for me, a daily driver if I wanted that will handle decently, accelerate and brake very well, and of course something that nobody in this area will have ...

So here is what we are doing, 1973 FJ40 Toyota Landcruiser with
Pretty much ALL new parts
Completely done up LQ9 with full Holley setup / 88' split case / NV4500 5spd transmission / LOTS of AA parts / 4" upgraded suspension with Fox shocks / 4 wheel disc / 60' Series power steering conversion / PSI wiring with DBW and AAW 28 circuit GM harness / Tanks-Inc / Metal-Tech goodies / Stealth Custom Series wheels and lots more cool stuff

So here is where we are at ...

Grabbed this partially started project from a guys over in Oregon, like new 73' front end with a new Aqualu aluminum tub. Unlike the Camaro, there are NO surprises here, like starting from brand new

Rebuilt NV4500 5 speed (this thing almost weighs 250lbs !!)

and finally colour scheme I'm likely going with, Audi Nardo grey and all black accents

I know this isn't as extreme as the Camaro, but I hope this is of interest to many of you .. this should be FUN

Good to be back again :thankyou:

cool project!!! I've always had a soft spot for FJ's and Defenders. What are your plans for the suspension?

Sheck44
10-10-2017, 03:38 AM
Decided to keep the suspension fairly simple.
4" lift on BTB Safari Springs (was going to go OME but they don't have a 4" so this was the best option) reverse shackle kit and Fox shocks

Pretty much copying one of Mr. Ward's TLC/ICON builds, I figured he has these dialled in pretty well so I'd do the same

I totally agree that on the right vehicle the colour totally works, and for me it so works for this style of build. If I was going towards more of a Resto style then maybe a Venetian blue Porsche colour

Marty, if I put it on the roof I'd be hitting trees, I'm likely going out the back for the rack

New suspension
New rebuilt GM 5 Speed NV4500 (found another one)
New 84 Toyota split case (found another one)
New Dakota Digital dash
New saginaw steering setup

Oh boy, and whats ridiculous is I was going to sell this one and now I'm at a total loss on which one I'm going to keep

Anyway, one of these will be sold and either way both are going to be awesome and completely different

I'll make this thread into a double 40 build now cause some of you may be interested in this Diesel build

It's funny how these hobbies intermix.

I've done quite a few 4x4's... currently building my daughter a Jeep YJ, with Dana 60's, a hopped up L33, paddle shifted built 4L60E and a Dana 300 with stuff. Stretching the wheel base and painting it Orange like Momma's CJ7. That also has stuff ;).

Steve, finally built my own console. Somewhat based on the one you had in the '69, but not quite as fancy. I like it better than the old one I had though..
Thanks for the inspiration!

I figured the motor weight would be close, but I didn't think the new one would be lighter. Seeing the HP/TQ on the 2F it's amazing the power the Land Cruiser has. My 72 with almost 200,000 on it could tear down buildings, the snow would be rolling over the hood and it kept going.

The steering on the newer ones like your were much improver over the early one after they removed the steering pivot point on the front frame. Is it a leather gasket on the front steering knuckle on the diff?
Both are going to be great builds.

Sheck44 I can't believe you waited more than a month to open that crate! I realize you said it initially wasn't at your place but crate engines don't show up for me every day. I would have had greasy paw prints and drool all over it from day one even if I had to leave work early to do it!

You have far more self control than I do. Do fresh chocolate chip cookies go bad at your house too? :mock:

So looks like the engine has to go back approx. 1.5" to give us some extra space for the rad fan, and better for the intake tube as well. Guess this is the reason we pre-assemble everything ! Looks like this is the last of the clearance issues .. still have to place the front grill today and check for AC and oil cooler space

You made the engine mounts or adapted a stock mount?

Hey Jeff ... hope all is well

Rad I sourced from Speedway, the motor mounts were already fabbed in the truck and we used them just as a reference point to where we want to be. I have new mounts from AA.

The block headers I actually sourced from a local vendor ... stainless and I have to excellent quality

The rad mounting kit I sourced for BTB Products ... had to be 'slightly' modified but will work perfectly for this application

Did you use the Holley pulley setup because you had to, or you just needed a pulley setup and theirs was compact?

I've got a '14 Camaro pullout that I planned to use as-is, thinking that arrangement would be as compact as they come....

awesome build(s)! I had an '84 FJ60 and 3 FZJ80s.

That Holley high ram probably isn't the best choice for an intake... especially below 5000rpm. http://www.hotrod.com/articles/20-ls1-intake-manifolds-tested/

Very curious to see how the Cummins 2.8 turns out. Read lots about them.

BIG thanks goes out to Jim and Paul that worked with me to build a new Hydroboost kit for the OEM FJ40's ...
Of course pics coming next week after I pick this up

Fuel system complete - we used the fuel system from the Tanks-Inc. (pump/sending unit) and modified the top of the fuel cap to accommodate. Very easy and super clean setup

Jeff ... mmmmm
well 1st off I guess I was so pleased with the Camaro system that I basically replicated that for the FJ, big 6 piston wilwoods up front and 11's in the rear, and this one is the 'over the top' truck so it I kinda figured it needed the HB. This is the more 'pro-touring' version if thats even a thing for FJ's ... LOL

Now the Diesel I have a new conventional setup with 4 wheel disc brakes

You may not know this, but we do all of the systems for TLC / ICON on their Early Bronco and FJ builds. Icon is even upgrading older previously shipped EB and FJ builds to hydroboost now. When Steve mentioned he was potentially interested in discussing hydroboost for his build, we sent him these images:

Wicked Custom 4 Door build (225k!)

http://www.hydratechbraking.com/images/TLCCUSTOM4DOORFJ.jpg

http://www.hydratechbraking.com/images/TLCICONFJ.jpg

http://www.hydratechbraking.com/images/TLCICONUNIT.jpg

Being a previous customer on his Camaro build, Steve saw these images, and I could tell he could barely contain himself. After bouncing some images and dimensions around, all of a sudden this new OE FJ system exists (interesting that the ICON builds are different due to their own custom firewalls).

We spoke with another gentleman about this system the other day that ran over a deer blazing down a trail because he couldn't stop properly (what a mess that made - yuck). He is now gathering his funds together to perform this upgrade on his FJ.

Steve, what are you going to do to provide vacuum to the brake booster on your diesel build? I've got a feeling that we may be building you another system for that one. Especially with all of that diesel torque in low lock climbing around your favorite trails with lesser brakes at the wheels...

The problem we have now is that we have to get with some FJ guru's to figure out what the year / model break points are for this new system we built for Steve. Of course we know it will fit a '73 FJ40 (and can do some basic part number investigation), but we now have customers inquiring about these systems and it's initially tough to say what will fit and what will not. Anybody got any feedback on this for me please? I have to admit I need a schooling on FJ's. I never thought we would be building systems for imports! I've interestingly never even sat in one before by some strange fluke.

OK... for those of you that may be interested in powder coating at home
I've always wanted to powder coat stuff myself as I'm fed up with taking parts to my local guy and spending a small fortune and waiting for the sh!t to get done. So I made a little investment ....

Eastwood starter Kit ... $165
5 more lbs of powder ... like $70.00
Nice oven off Kijiji ... $150
Panel breaker/electrical ... $60.00
Total ... Under $500.00

Result ... awesome !!!
This was so easy, should have done this a long time ago but I was a little intimidated.

Kit has it all, bag of plugs, heat safe tape, hanging wire etc.

Steve,
It doesn't matter what the Toyota guys think! Man, this is going to be as nice as the '69 I bet. Love watching you do your stuff. The pic of the powder coating looks like it turned out really well. The place I used to work powder coated their valve bodies. They shot peened the parts, dipped them into a water thin primer and put them into a 450 degree oven. They came out of the oven and we used what is called a fluidized bed for the powder. This consisted of a tank about 2' square. Under the bed of powder was a membrane that let air from a blower lift the powder and go all through the powder. not enough air to cause a dust storm but after turning it on the bed of powder would lift about 1". You could run your hand through it and never feel the powder. The hot valve bodies were hand dipped into the powder for a set amount of time and put on a rack to cool. Very nice process, but we only did one color... semi black.
Do you think the Eastwood products are going to hold up? I'm really interested in this too. I've seen it for years but was a bit apprehensive.
Very nice job on the FJ so far..

Have to admit these are nicer than I thought they'd be ... way nicer in person.
Quality of the leather and the stitching is superb

Ok, so those (with the white stitching) are going to go into the 66' Turbo diesel, colour still TBD but it will have the hard top and the customary white roof so the white stitching will tie in ...

The build is coming along nicely!

But.... One thing I noticed that truly alarmed me is that the ports on your steering gear are wide open, inviting a disaster that could even destroy our brake assist unit. This is a classic fubar that even the highly regarded mega high end pro builders make. Any tiny little fleck of debris can get in there without notice, possibly causing the PS pump to then self destruct, then ruining everything else in the PS system. Have you ever blown a torque converter or front pump before? poisoning the whole trans with pulverized metals almost to the point of no repair? If the PS pump self destructs, it will wreck the entire PS system the same way...

Sooooo..... Pretty please? Purty please with sugar on top? Tape or plug the ports shut on your steering gear - it sent chills right up my spine when I was checking out your build progress. Help! I cannot watch!

:bitchslap:

Hey Jeff, was just thinking about you this morning and wondering how yours is coming ... still trapped at interior ???

Ok so using stock side runners (Aqualu steps) But its very high ... Likely going to use some custom drop down steps like Amp Research Bedstep2 so the boss can get up more easily

We are down to door panels, the final step. I've seen his design render and signed off on it, just need to gitterdunn...

Really like those steps!! I guess I missed those when I was trying to figure out mine. Went with a tubular setup and added an extra stirrup for the boss.

Thought you guys would have a laugh over this .... So, because the truck is going to come in at around 7 foot 6" with the top on I had to install a NEW 8 foot door

I was out in the attached house garage the other day doing some measuring... the wife comes out and asks whats up? "I think I might be able to put a four post over here so we can stack a couple cars and make more room for vehicles..." she took the tape measure away and went back in the house... :bitchslap:

Well actually... there is a guy over on the FJ40 forums that is waiting for me to finish and will likely make me an offer ... LOL

BUT, Ryan what I really want to do is finish this one and then get my 1966 FJ40 build with the R2.8 Diesel completely done for March and enter them both in the front hall, side by side at the Autorama car show. 2 really high end builds but different, THEN decide which one to sell

Don't think thats never been done before and would be really cool

1st off it fired up and ran perfectly right off the bat (no lie), BUT someone forgot to plug an oil galley in the back of the block and oil went EVERYWHERE !!! LOL

Other than that I could not be more happy, this thing is running perfectly
BIG thanks to Paul that did a great job on building the motor and putting everything together with me

Thats the Sony XAV-AX100

Ok guys, so got all the stereo components hooked up temporarily yesterday and I have to say that this may be the best sounding system I've ever put together. Absolutely crystal clear, extremely precise and punchy and NOT boomy whatsoever ... and wow LOUD if you want.

Here is the list of items I'm using
Sony XAV-AX100
JL Audio JX360/4 amp (JL replaced now with RD400/4)
NVX QBUS8v2 8" powered sub under passenger seat, WOW for the $$ this thing is amazing !!
https://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_96824_NVX-QBUS8v2-Under-Seat-Powered-Subwoofer-Enclosure-with-Integrated-Amplifier.html

And these speakers ... I cannot say enough about these, if you like rock then these are for you

infinity KAPPA 693.11i 6x9

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-infinity-KAPPA-693-11i-660-Watts-6-x-9-3-Way-Coaxial-Car-speakers/292197382830?epid=217370357&hash=item4408523aae:g:nf8AAOSwnw9aC0kM

Infinity Kappa 60.11cs 6 1/2" in the kick panels

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Infinity-Kappa-60-11cs-540-Watt-6-5-2-Way-Car-Component-Speaker-System-6-1-2/232711415847?hash=item362eae6827:g:8lIAAOSwXRxauSG A

Should be completed by this weekend !!

Cheers
Steve

This thing turned out awesome! Which SEMA booth can we check it out in? Seriously, be much more of a draw than another lifted JK/JL.

John, thanks for that comment, boy that would be quite an honour, and I would take it if I wasn't like 2 thousand miles away LOL

Yes, as this thing comes together I could not be happier, again like the Camaro I had a vision for this truck and I believe it came together just the way I wanted ... when seen in person everyone's 1st words are 'bad A$$ !!' and thats exactly the response I was looking for

Off for interior this morning !!

I know I'm a little biased but I tend to agree .... (8

Steve it’s early and the first thread I open is yours as I can’t wait to see updated pictures.

Good news there was pictures and to see I am blown away yet again.

Love this build and I am so happy you shared it here.
