View Full Version : Dakota Digital VHX gauge control through BIM-01-2 with GMPP harness. How?

I recently purchased a Dakota Digital BIM-01-2 module to drive the VHX gauges from the LS ECM vs running all new sensors & wires for it. However the GMPP ALDL connector doesn't have the proper terminals available for the DD module to get the signal, instead these wires are in a separate connector in the harness.

So did you add these terminals to the ALDL connector, or connect the BIM module directly to this other connector in the harness to get the BUS signal?

I connected it to the OBDII port after adding an OBDII splitter adaptor. Easy and worked well.

That's what I was going to do, but GM didn't put the two terminals needed to feed the BIM module in the ALDL connector. But they are in the "bulkhead connector". So I either have to wire them to the ALDL connector. Or wire it direct to the BIM module with a RS232 connector.

I just connected it and it worked. No mods needed. GM connect and cruise LS3. What two terminals are you referring to? The BIM just reads the OBDII port as far as I know.

Sorry if I am not following you.

The BIM module gets its signal from terminals 6 & 10.

My ALDL has 4,5,6,15 & 16 filled, no others.

I'm going to have to get the signal from A & G in the bulkhead connector.

Mine just read the serial data on pin 2. No other signals needed. My bulkhead was connected to my trans controller if I remember right.

Just going by what DD Tech guy has told me, regardless, I don't have it either.

Everyone we have done correctly necessary right to OBD port and is done. Easy

Then I guess I have a b@sturd GMPP harness. The wires needed for the BIM module are NOT in the ALDL connector, repeat NOT in it. I sent a pic of it to DD & he told me they are not there. So I have to run new wires for it.

My ALDL connector:

It looks like you have 6 and 14 populated, that would be can + on 6 and can - on 14.

The GM cars that harness is based off of use the can bus for gauges. I doubt the IPC information is on the serial bus that would be connected to pin 2 on an older OBD2 car.

The tech at Dakota Digital said I needed terminals 6 & 10. 10 is not there.

OK so I called them today & talked to a different tech. This one said I needed pins 6 & 14 just like you said. I tested the cable & its good, for some reason somethign isnt getting a connection when I put it in the ALDL connector, but if I put an extension cable in between them, it works.

Oil pressure doesnt work though. Original tech said if oil sensor has 3 wires it would work, well it didnt.

I still want to wire it direct, it only needs two wires. You suggest I tap into the back of the ALDL wires, or from the ECM? And do I need to twist them together?

THanks

Can't you use the stock oil pressure sensor and read it off the bus? That is what I did. Same for temperature, stock sender and read it off the bus.

Sorry for the bad advice on which pin the data is on.

I ran the CEL, VSS and Oil pressures off of the bulkhead connector. I realized after installing the BIM module I didn't have to use the CEL and VSS outputs of the bulkhead but I connected those wires (and the oil pressure wire) to the appropriate SND input on the control panel. I would use a stock oil press sender and connect it to the GMPP oil press plug (2 wires, grey and black) and use CAN for the sending unit type on the DD setup menu. Here is a picture of my OP sender. I am starting to swap in the new HDX gauges this week so I will post up pics of how I ran those wires specifically (installed thrm 3 years ago).

That's what I had hoped to do, but for some reason it's not working, tach, temp work from it, speed ist correct at the moment

I'm not certain how to direct wire the CAN connection since there is a terminator resistor at each end of it. Maybe call DD again?

Mine worked with a simple Y adaptor so that would imply just make a direct connection to the lines and do not add any terminations.
