Figured i'd start a thread on my 36 chevy truck project. This truck is being built to play in the mountain roads, maybe some possible track days for fun, and just an all around truck to hoon around in.

Custom built frame with rollcage, suspension based of c6 geometry, twin turbo v8/auto, big brakes, etc....

Heres where I'm at on the frame. Still need to do some fish plates on the joints. I'll be drawing up brackets for the control arm mounts next week and hopefully stabbing the motor and trans into place so i can get the mounts/crossmembers fabbed up. Wanting to send the motor/trans out asap to the machine shop to get built for the twin turbo setup to minimize downtime.

I'll be notching out the cab so it sits even on the frame rails.

I love the older iron, it'll be fun watching this come together! Are you planning on full fenders?.....please say yes.

Sorry to dissapoint but no fenders. I hadnt planned on it when i first started this build. But the full bodied truck look has grown on me since starting. As far as body panels Ill just be running the 36 low cab, a 34 truck grill, and a truck bed made from scratch. Interior wise im having a few carbon fiber interior panels made. I wanted something very basic bodywork wise but on the extreme side of performance. Really hoping to get control arm backetry done and welded on and control arms built real soon so i can have a rolling chassis to look at.

Lots of parts ordering the past few days and not much work unfortunately. Hoping this weekend I'll be able to get the motor and transmission mounted so i can get started on the sheet metal on the cab. Hoping to get wheels powdercoated tomorrow morning and get the tires mounted and check that off the list.

Front rotors arrived, I'll be slowly piecing the brake setup together as I find deals.

I should have my new oilpan tomorrow so I can finish mounting the engine and transmission into the frame. Oil pan is roughly 1.5" too deep and didnt allow the trans pan to sit flat on the table. Trying to have everything sit flat with the frame rail.

Still waiting on my collectors to be finished and shipped which should be in the next few days and then i'll have everything to start the manifolds.

Love the theme of this project. Would like it more with fenders. With no fenders it might give the impression of a T-bucket?

Made some temporary caster/frame stands to get the frame on the ground until i get the suspension and wheels mounted. It was time to get the frame off the table to make future work easier. Pretty happy with how my 1st frame came out though. Need to finish the transmission crossmember still. Just purchased a zl1 rear diff so hopefully i can get some sort of cool billet aluminum mount setup drawn up and machined.

Recieved all my fishplates to strengthen up the joints on the truck. So i'll probably get those tacked up and welded into place over the weekend.

Started on all the rear suspension bracketry but that quickly came to a halt since i havent recieved the zl1 rear diff yet. Need to get that so I can build the rear tube subframe and lay it out in a way i can mount the rear diff and make the brackets for the lower control arms in a clean manner.

ZL1 rear diff arrived at the end of the week. This thing is stout and lil bigger that I thought it would be. Still trying to figure out if I wanna do a bolt-in tubular rear crossmember which will mount the rear diff and lower control arm brackets. Or do a permanent weld-in sheet metal assembly thats fully boxed in. Hopefully I'll get dimensions of the zl1 rear diff and have something figured out by the end of week so I can get back to making progress on this truck.

I am now many months behind schedule. Work got busy and started other projects, blah blah.

But Ive now sourced the entire zr1 brake setup, ive bought a few more parts as well. I machined a small fixture to hold the c6 vette spindles in the mill so i can modify them for the 7deg taper i'll be using. Rear subframe is 100% done and getting laser cut now. Finishing up fixtures in solidworks this weekend so i can start building the control arms.

Trying to figure out what steering rack i want to run on this thing so i can start on the front crossmember and suspension brackets off the frame. But have no idea on what to use. Progress should hopefully pick back up though since ive finished all my small projects that i started the last few months.

Heres the subframe. Some sheetmetal is missing but its fully boxed in and should do the trick. I also made a jig that will slip over both frame rails and locate all the brackets, etc....

Got my rear crossmember mostly tacked up, still have a few more pieces to add until its complete and fully boxed. Going to weld the assembly with it welded to the frame rails i think to try and keep everything straight.

calipers all coated up with brake setup, just missing pads at this point. The color looks great in the sunlight but isnt 100% what i had in mind so i might recoat them a different shade of blue. But im also thinking of selling these and just going with regular z06 brakes. But now that i have these i may regret sell them.

I don't know why this is over looked as much as it is, but this thing is sick.

I think its because I dont have a sinister name for the truck in the thread title.

But thank you, hopefully it turns out how i envision it.

I also sold the original trans motor over the weekend. Going to a manual trans setup and maybe convert over to an aluminum block.

I think this will get a lot more attention with just a little more progress. I think it's an awesome concept! I hate comparing projects but seems it'll be a road version of the Trophy Rat.

I remember I was going to ask you your thoughts on the comfort of the fixed back seat but I ended up picking up a pair to try out anyways.

Keep it up!

Obsessive ebay searches throughout the day.....everyday. In hindsight I should of done all camaro suspension that way i could of used off the shelf axles and just used the regular zl1 brakes, etc... to save money. Next time!

Where did you get that frame table ? approximate cost ?

Who cut the box panels for you ? Were they laser cut or water jet ? I assume they worked off of your solidworks files.

Did you buy those frame rails already bent or did someone do that custom for you ? They kind of look like something Art Morrison might have built ?

Great truck, when bogged down in sheet metal work and other stuff I used to day dream about building a bare bones hot rod/truck style vehicle with a minimum of cosmetic work to do. I much prefer building chassis and suspension stuff over body panels.

It will be a lot more exciting once we get some idea of what it will look like !

I build the table, its only a 4x5x1" aluminum table with 1/2" tapped holes on a 4" grid. I got this setup for a steal, $550 shipped which included the waterjet cutting. I really need a bigger table if im gonna do chassis work.

By box panels what are you referring to? Im guessing the rear crossmember, if so i had the local laser shop cut them out for me.

Frame rails i bought the prebent 90*s from art morrison.

Last night I did some sanding on the rear section, tacked on the fishplates on the rear kick and welded on the upper suspension bracketry. Gonna shoot to have the rear suspension all welded up on the frame by the end of the weekend.

Shop location I worked at closed and then reopened causing a hiatus from the project and almost abandoning it entirely. But now finally back into it. Ordered the uniballs early this week which arrived today. Measured them after work and input into solidworks and finished my control arm fixtures. Sending these out to get laser cut tomorrow. I still need to remove the balljoints from the knuckles and modify them for use with my control arms.

Ive also been rethinking my drivetrain choice and doing something a little different and maybe going with the the 5.0l v10 s85 bmw motor. Could work out great but then again i could be plagued with the semi common bearing issue, etc.... I try not to get too caught up with all the forum horror stories of the motors. Some people love em, some people hate em. Those motors sound great and it isnt an ls motor.
