View Full Version : Project 66 Chevelle

I have started a new project, this time a Chevelle. I've always been a Camaro guy but wanted to change it up this time. This will be a ground up build, including an after market frame (still trying to decide who's) leaning towards Schwartz Performance or maybe Scott's HotRods?? If anybody has experience with either of these, I'd like to hear about it. I will be going with an LS3 as well and still thinking about which way to go with the transmission. Vintage Air, Dakota Digital VHX gauges, TMI interior pieces etc...undecided on wheels at this point, but I have time to think about that.
The body is already on the rack and mini tubs are in, we are now starting to work on the outside body. All in all the body is in pretty good shape, just a few areas to patch. hoping for a 2 year max build...we'll see! More to come soon...

I went with Scott's Hot Rods out of SoCal. I met with him this past weekend at the Good Guys show and went ahead and ordered it. They do nice work, fully tig welded 2x4 framing, complete with suspension (Ridetech coilovers all around) 14" Wilwood drilled and slotted, 6 piston calipers, fuel and brake lines plumbed, fuel tank, splined sway bars front and rear, power rack and pinion, Moser 9" rear with 3.70 gears...the whole thing!!!

You are set brother! Wow...
Nothing like face to face at a good guys event. I know that first hand. Well done Steve!

Funny, I thought the garage looked very familiar (seeing the bricks on the outside) and noticed where you're from. Howdy neighbor.

I've always liked the 66's, looking forward to your progress.

Sounds awesome. Out of curiosity, what was the biggest deciding factor versus an AME chassis?

I had the chance to meet face to face and see their product in person at the good guys show this past weekend and I liked what I saw, I guess and they are somewhat local (by that I mean they are in CA.) That and I tend to go against the grain a little too...

Finally, the frame was just delivered! Now to install the axles, center section and rear brakes. The front brake kit is on backorder for another week, unfortunately. But then I will set the body on the frame and start some mock up and figure out where I will need to make some floor adjustments...hopefully, not to much though.

Brakes are on front and rear (without calipers due to not having wheels big enough to handle them yet) and it's in rolling form. I borrowed an older LS truck motor from a mechanic friend, just for test fitting the body on the frame. We set the body on last weekend (half assed) and it looks like the only cutting I may have to do is in the trunk hump area and possibly a little at the front of the tunnel. I'll be doing the cutting tomorrow to see how it goes. Judging from how it sets on the frame right now, I can tell already that this thing is going to be pretty damn low. more pics to follow later this weekend, if all goes as planned.

That's gonna be a monster!

I have a 66 Skylark with a similar tank and filler arrangement. Let me tell you now that unless you have some sort of one-way valve on there you will be ejecting prodigious amounts of fuel. :drowninga:

The body is on the frame, finally! not an easy task this weekend, there was a lot of trimming I had to do in the trunk, the tunnel, underneath at a few places due to clearance issues etc... I had to take a lot more of the tunnel out than I had originally thought, but that's all part of it I guess. the new frame fits pretty well, tight fit, but a good fit. Does anybody else ask themselves why they start projects like this, or is just me? :lostmarbles:

LOL, thanks! I'll feel much better once I get that tunnel put back together and welded up. the trunk is easy, I'm just going cut those drain holes out and angle a piece from the floor up to the shelf/hump, I think that will look clean.

It's been a while and progress has been really slow, but we are picking up the pace some, now. Been welding up the rear trunk area where I cut it out for the suspension cross member, as well as the transmission tunnel. Starting on the body work, now before we blow it apart, put the body back on the Rotisserie and tear down the frame for powder coat.

Got the Lizard Skin sound deadener and insulation sprayed in the interior this weekend and then painted it with a semi gloss just to give it a little sheen...stuff made quite a difference. We also sprayed the bottom of the care with a semi gloss black, came out really clean looking, pic to follow later of that.
