Yelcamino 2.0

Welcome to the build thread for my '66 El Camino. It's 2.0 because I never had a thread for the first iteration. Some of you know me and my Camino, some don't, so here's a little background...

I bought Yelcamino from my friend in the summer of 1997. It was an original Arizona car with about 90,000 miles on it. It was fairly rough but not terrible.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/001_zpsvtzdzrpj.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/001_zpsvtzdzrpj.jpg.html)

Before this car, I had never done a frame off build of anything so there was a huge learning curve. The first order of business was getting it disassembled and fixing the problem areas.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/003_zpsctpvslna.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/003_zpsctpvslna.jpg.html)

While the body work was being done, I had the chassis at home so I could detail the frame, install the suspension, and build the engine and install it. Once the body was ready, I brought the completed chassis to the shop and they put the two back together.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/004_zpscp8b9l3p.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/004_zpscp8b9l3p.jpg.html)

After that, the body and paint were finished. Here it is in the sun with the new paint for the first time in 2001.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/005_zpsckxjkuhy.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/005_zpsckxjkuhy.jpg.html)

Carol and I were really pleased with how it turned out! I spent the next year or so getting everything working and reliable.

We took it to a lot of events and in the process got a lot of exposure. So much so that it made a couple of magazine covers and features.

Fast forward to 2012... I retired from the Coast Guard after 24 years and started working at Ridetech. In 2013 I hurt the 454 while on Gingerman at the Motorstate Challenge. It was shortly after that I bought my '63 C10. Since the engine was hurt and needed to be gone through and freshened, Yelcamino graciously donated it to the C10 project in the hopes of getting something new and improved.

Its patience has finally paid off, because now it's getting a fresh crate LS3!

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20150809_145303_zps3h05g64x.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20150809_145303_zps3h05g64x.jpg.html)

The LS3 is getting a new cam, springs, retainers, pushrods, timing set, trunnions and valve covers. In addition to the LS3, Yelcamino will be getting new brakes, tires, and an update on the Forgeline wheels.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20150821_102154_zpsn7hcj7qa.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20150821_102154_zpsn7hcj7qa.jpg.html)

At the moment, she's on the lift while I open up the trans tunnel so I can get the driveline angles where they should be.

That's where I am so far.

Very cool, Herb! I'm glad to see you giving the Camino some love. I really dig all your builds, especially the Chevelle. This will be fun to watch it come together. Are you planning any suspension changes? Good luck!

Where did you get the polished aluminum valve covers. I can't seem to find the Chevy script polished ones.

Thanks Trey. No suspension changes planned at the moment, but then, we all know how plans tend to go...

If you're referring to the big block valve covers, I polished them.

So speaking of progress, I'm still working on the trans tunnel but other things keep getting in the way.

However, I did get some goodies in the mail yesterday! :ups:

It’s been about a month since I updated my thread so this is what I’ve been up to…

Following the Baer brake upgrade, I installed an Aeromotive fuel system that consisted of a Phantom in-tank pump, filter, and regulator.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04839_zpsc9pidywg.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04839_zpsc9pidywg.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04841_zpswmxajavh.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04841_zpswmxajavh.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04862_zpsmyzcds4e.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04862_zpsmyzcds4e.jpg.html)

I need to finish the wiring for the sender and pump but for the most part, it’s good to go.

Next up are the headers. The first set I bought were Doug’s (D3336-B) and they seemed to fit pretty good until I raised the back of the engine into position. That's when the collectors came in contact with the floorboards. So back to Summit they went.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04857_zpsaa6wmpkm.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04857_zpsaa6wmpkm.jpg.html)

After some internet research, I settled on a set of American Racing Headers (ABLS-64178300HR) in stainless. These headers cleared the floorboards with plenty of room.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04871_zpsitssulls.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04871_zpsitssulls.jpg.html)

The passenger side slid into place easily and cleared everything. The driver side went in with some fidgeting and once in place the #7 primary tube contacted the lower control arm rear mount.

In hind sight, I probably should have sent them back but I made the driver side fit by trimming off the back side of the control arm mount. Once I’m done with fitment, I’ll weld in a new back piece.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04896_zpsrf5upmaq.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04896_zpsrf5upmaq.jpg.html)

I think this may be a case of “one size fits all – we hope” for the older applications. At the very least, I have my doubts that ARH trial fit this model in an early A-body. There was plenty of room to position the #7 tube to clear the control arm mount but for whatever reason they didn’t do it. Aside from that, they clear everything else and look like a good quality header.

Next on the list was to modify the trans cross member for the exhaust.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04870_zpslfrdqpnr.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04870_zpslfrdqpnr.jpg.html)

I got the ball rolling by mounting the cross member to the work bench.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04903_zpslbihjctd.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04903_zpslbihjctd.jpg.html)

I cut out the offending sections and welded in the tubes.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04904_zpsdulxxwm4.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04904_zpsdulxxwm4.jpg.html)

Since the tubing I used was a thinner wall then I would have preferred, I cut the bottom of the tubes off and welded the cut off sections to the back side of the other tube halves for reinforcement. I also added a pair of gussets to each tube section. It feels pretty solid and gets the job done. I may do something different down the road, but until then, this works.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04905_zpsf4vqeik5.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04905_zpsf4vqeik5.jpg.html)
Now it's time for some engine work. So yesterday I swapped out the stock LS3 cam for a custom Comp grind. I also replaced the stock single row chain with a Comp double roller set, replaced the LS3 chain tensioner with a LS2 version, and upgraded the trunnions.

Comp Cam on the left, stocker on the right.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04911_zpsxkcopdox.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04911_zpsxkcopdox.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04935_zpsthykjrhu.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04935_zpsthykjrhu.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04941_zpspzuzssj8.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04941_zpspzuzssj8.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04919_zpsiflg8s1i.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04919_zpsiflg8s1i.jpg.html)

I still need to check valve to piston clearance and install the new springs, retainers, and pushrods.

Slowly but surely Yelcamino 2.0 is moving forward.

Hey Herb tell us more about the cam man.... and what oil pan are you using? The headers look great.

The cam is a Comp custom grind using their new lobe designs.

I tried a Canton pan (15-274) but the inner tie rods made contact at full lock and the sump hung about 1/2" below the crossmember. I sent that back and today I should have a Tilden Motorsports pan. Based on measurements, it should fit and clear better.

Thanks for the reply on the Tilden pan. Are you going to use their standard version or the pro series? Their standard LS pan looks to be the same as a Autokraft pan with the same dimensions but somewhat higher cost wise hope this helps. Gerald

I went with the Pro Series specifically because it has a 1/8" skid plate built in.

Well it's been a while since I updated my thread! Aside from being lazy about it, I broke my thumb and tried to amputate it in the process back in November. It's still healing but I'm back at it so I figured I should share what I've been up to. I'm just going to go through the camera and post what's new in no particular order.

Even though I don't need it, I couldn't stop myself from getting a Holley mid-ram...

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04984_zpsjvejgpks.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04984_zpsjvejgpks.jpg.html)

It looks even better on the engine!

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20151211_182707_zps9vqdhgcj.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20151211_182707_zps9vqdhgcj.jpg.html)

My big mile stone is completing the trans tunnel. Since I don't have the ability to form sheet metal I built a skeleton and then cut sheet metal and welded it to the skeleton. It was probably more work then necessary but I think it turned out ok and now there's plenty of room for the TKO.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04991_zpsag67dqli.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC04991_zpsag67dqli.jpg.html)

I also finished modifying the rear lower control arm mounts to clear the headers.
Here you can see where I cut the back off on the driver side...

I'm sure there's more I'm forgetting but this should bring you up to date for the most part.

Not much to report from over the weekend other than a radiator cover I made. I had a piece of scrap aluminum taking up space and the next thing I know, I'm bending it and drilling holes and before I knew it, voila!

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/Elky_rad%20cover_zpsqbjcfalq.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/Elky_rad%20cover_zpsqbjcfalq.jpg.html)

After I took this pic, I drilled it for four 1/4-20 bolts and installed nutserts in the core support. It will be powder coated satin black (the rad has since been painted black).

I was able to get away from the house project for a bit this weekend and I actually made some progress.

I finally got the Baer ReMaster installed, bent some new brakes lines, and bled the system (in case you're curious, that's a Ring Brothers clutch master on the firewall)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05035_zps9atwrzwx.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05035_zps9atwrzwx.jpg.html)

No pictures, but I finished installing the Vintage Air Gen IV system.

And the big accomplishment, I got the engine in!

Thanks! The engine compartment was painted in 2000 and has suffered some chips and scratches over the years, but overall it still looks decent.

The clutch is one of your Dual Friction units. The flywheel is a McLeod (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/mcl-460535) that is .400 thicker to accommodate the standard Chevy bell housing. I also installed their extended length pilot bushing.

Last week I set the intake on the engine to check hood clearances but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I've got a few updates to share...

Almost done with the air intake tube. I just need to weld on the MAF bung and then have it powder coated. I also finished making all the AC and heater hoses.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05047_zpsltdbqnol.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05047_zpsltdbqnol.jpg.html)

I finished making the oil cooler and accusump lines (the zip ties are temporary until I get some actual hose separators).

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05048_zpsmszdt57d.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05048_zpsmszdt57d.jpg.html)

The exhaust is done.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05051_zpsv7kulgpd.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05051_zpsv7kulgpd.jpg.html)

And I figured out my radiator hoses. The upper hose is a Gates 22147 with 1" trimmed of the radiator end. The lower hose is a Gates 22437 with 1" trimmed off the radiator end and about 4.5" trimmed off the water pump end.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05070_zpsrmse1mmi.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC05070_zpsrmse1mmi.jpg.html)

I'm sure there's a bunch of things left to do that I can't think of at the moment, but the only big things now are the engine harness, AC harness, put the interior back together, and a dyno tune once it's up and running.

Sorry no pictures or videos, but I took Yelcamino for it's first test drive yesterday! I was impressed. It drove good, sounded good, it even felt like it had some power! However, a few things need to be addressed...

1. As I came to a stop, the engine would idle down almost sounding like it was going to stall, but then it would catch itself and the idle would increase.
2. The exhaust would cackle and pop on deceleration (my '08 Vette did the same thing and I was told that just something LS engines do).
3. I need to bleed the brakes again.

I assume tuning will cure 1 and 2.

Overall it was a good first test drive!

The more you free the exhaust up... the more it pops.

The larger the injector you go... the louder it pops.

I have 95 lb / hr injectors on my blown C6 - and it sounds like a gun goes off.

Nice to know!

I had it dyno tuned last Thursday and some adjustments were made so the popping on decel isn't as bad but it's still there. I can live with it.

Loaded up and heading to Mike Norris Motorsports...

I'm happy with the results to say the least! 454 hp and 412 ft/lb at the wheels for a stock LS3 with a cam and headers is pretty good in my book!

It’s been a while since I updated my thread so here goes…

I downsized the sound system (no subs and only one amp) and started to mock up the rear speakers and four-channel amp. Once the interior is done, I’ll install it to stay.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20160622_185846_zpsetll91ha.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20160622_185846_zpsetll91ha.jpg.html)

Thanks to help from my friend Josh, I was able to put together a custom splined front bar. It’s stiffer than the old bent bar and provides a lot more room for the wider front tires.

Speaking of tires, the Bridgestone RE11 tires are certainly sticky!

Not really performance oriented, but I added a bed cover the other day. I’m not a big fan of these things, but it does help keep the rain off the luggage.

Following the dyno tune, I’ve been trying to get some miles on the engine prior to my first event – Motor State Challenge 2016. Not having been on track in some time, I was pretty rusty to say the least. Thanks to the updated suspension and sticky tires, Yelcamino felt great on track! Officially I had the slowest lap times at Gingerman, but I’m sure with a more skilled driver, Yelcamino could put down respectable numbers.

Nothing new to report other than getting some seat time in the El. A couple of weeks ago I did a SCCA autocross and last weekend the LS Fest. Here are a couple of shots my wife got of me on course at the NCM...

Since last August I've been pretty busy with going to school full time, but in between classes I made time to replace the TKO600 with a T56 Magnum from Bowler (https://www.bowlertransmissions.com/).

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161119_183449_zpsvaeaeyjy.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161119_183449_zpsvaeaeyjy.jpg.html)

Obviously I started with the removal of the TKO600.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161120_124548_zpswuzsldig.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161120_124548_zpswuzsldig.jpg.html)

Next I installed the LS7 flywheel and block protector. Since I wanted to check the bellhousing alignment and I couldn't get the dial indicator's base to sit securely on the flywheel bolts, I cut a 1/4” thick plate for it to attach to. Not only did the base sit flat and secure, it also made the center post stick further through the hole in the trans plate making it a little easier to attach the dial indicator.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161127_152056_zpsjfdlxied.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161127_152056_zpsjfdlxied.jpg.html)

Following that I installed the Quicktime bellhousing (https://www.holley.com/products/drivetrain/bellhousings/bellhousing/parts/RM-8020) and the front plate from the T56. First I checked to make sure the bell was parallel to the block (it was)…

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161127_154154_zpsemi2vpqx.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161127_154154_zpsemi2vpqx.jpg.html)

Then I checked concentricity and came up with a total runout of .007”.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161127_164427_zpsysccxzjm.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161127_164427_zpsysccxzjm.jpg.html)

Let me back up a bit. Prior to the Quicktime bellhousing, I had originally bought a stock aluminum bellhousing but ran into an issue with the starter not fitting. After doing a little research, it turns out this is common depending on which version of starter and bellhousing you use. At first I did a little grinding on the starter nose to make it fit.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161121_181737_zpsy6ahd1bg.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161121_181737_zpsy6ahd1bg.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161121_181746_zpstppu3diy.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161121_181746_zpstppu3diy.jpg.html)

Here you can see where the starter nose hit the aluminum bell (marked with copper color).

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161121_181823_zps8pbrtrf1.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161121_181823_zps8pbrtrf1.jpg.html)

I could have ground on the bell to make room, but I acquired a $250 gift certificate to Bowler, so I exchanged the aluminum bell for the Quicktime thinking I wouldn’t have any fitment issues.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161123_151858_zpsukorogel.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161123_151858_zpsukorogel.jpg.html)

Turns out I had the same issue with the Quicktime, so out came the grinder!
In this pic, you see on the left before I clearanced the block protector and on the right after.

And here’s the bell before and after grinding…

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/163650_zpsilhikko3.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/163650_zpsilhikko3.jpg.html)

With the bellhousing aligned, I installed the LS7 clutch assembly and reinstalled the bellhousing for the final time.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161129_184513_zps88oa9aza.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161129_184513_zps88oa9aza.jpg.html)

With that done, I installed the TO bearing, measured for the air gap, and adjusted it.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161205_171721_zpsuyru2gzt.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161205_171721_zpsuyru2gzt.jpg.html)

Before I put the T56 in, I installed the new Tilton clutch MC and mounting kit I got from Bowler. It’s model specific to the early A-bodies and it fit very good. Because I have a hydroboost, the MC needed to be mounted on its side so the fittings didn’t run into the hydroboost body. The mounting bracket from Bowler has mounting holes so the MC can be upright or on its side without ruining the geometry between it and the clutch pedal. On this version of the MC, there are two outlet ports to choose from, one on top and the other at the end of the MC body. I used the one at the end.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161124_113229_zps3ya9zhzm.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161124_113229_zps3ya9zhzm.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161124_184644_zpsovacpr5e.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161124_184644_zpsovacpr5e.jpg.html)

There’s also this little adapter the bolts to the clutch pedal so the linkage rod pushes into the MC at the correct angle. Overall, this is a nice kit and I’ll be sure to install one of these on the Chevelle when I get back to it.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161124_120925_zpsmopyrh3b.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161124_120925_zpsmopyrh3b.jpg.html)

The next big step was getting the T56 installed. Other than having to massage the passenger side of the trans tunnel and trimming two little casting tabs off the side of the trans body, it fit in my custom trans tunnel like a charm!

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161203_144348_zpssflbdm6e.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161203_144348_zpssflbdm6e.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161206_102824_zpshmsnkfpy.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161206_102824_zpshmsnkfpy.jpg.html)

Because the T56 is longer than the TKO and the trans mount is further back, I had to relocate the crossmember, which also necessitated modifying the exhaust. To relocate the crossmember, I cut the original mounting tabs off the frame to make room for these new tabs I made.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161129_184453_zpsacrlu4dc.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161129_184453_zpsacrlu4dc.jpg.html)

In this final shot, you can see the new tabs on the frame and the modified exaust (the X needed to be moved back to the clear the crossmember in its new location).

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161212_171503_zps5dlnruag.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/T56%20Magnum/20161212_171503_zps5dlnruag.jpg.html)

I still have to connect the three trans sensors, build a small console, and get the interior finished. Once I get those things knocked out, I think I'll be ready for the 2017 season.

You're welcome!

Yes, I have an aluminum 509" short block. Once I finish disassembling the 454 that's in the Chevelle, I'll have a set of AFR heads for the new engine. Induction is still in the air, but I'm leaning toward Holley's HP EFI. The block is a Brodix.

Over the last few days I built a console. It's far from a professional level but I think it turned out ok.

I started with a sheet of 18 gauge mild steel and after a few templates, cut, fit, trim, fit, trim some more, I eventually ended up with this:

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/04_zps4mvfbiji.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/04_zps4mvfbiji.jpg.html)

I still need to cut holes for a pair of cup holders build the mounts to hold it in place.

Cup holders and cel phone slot in place...

I know you guys have been dying for updates on Yelcamino, so here they are!

I've had an open car trailer for a while and though it gets the job done, I‘ve always wanted an enclosed car trailer, but a nice one is pretty pricey so I haven’t bothered. A few weeks ago I found a used one with all the bells and whistles for a decent price and I had a buyer for my open trailer, so I jumped on it. It’s a 2012 model, it has AC, roll out awning, ceiling vents, a Warn winch, and a finished interior.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170325_153245_zpsfzowrgeg.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170325_153245_zpsfzowrgeg.jpg.html)

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170325_152624_zpsyltuwckc.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170325_152624_zpsyltuwckc.jpg.html)

April 1st rolls around and Yelcamino is loaded in the new trailer ready to go to Putnam Park for some road course time with the 10/10ths group. My first session out the car was feeling good, the track was fun, and I was getting familiar with the track…

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC_1882_zpsc1cl3sth.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/DSC_1882_zpsc1cl3sth.jpg.html)

Fast forward to my second session… The first four or five laps were a repeat of the first session, then coming down the front straight around 110 mph, there was a huge “boom” that was loud enough for my wife to hear it from where she was standing taking pictures! Following the boom was the tell tale sign of a drive shaft coming apart. This wasn’t how I wanted to end my track day, but it wasn’t the worst thing that could happen, or so I thought.

Fortunately, my new trailer came equipped with a nice Warn winch so getting Yelcamino loaded wasn’t too big of an issue. After I got it home and up on the lift, I expected to see a blown u-joint, but instead I was greeted with this:

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170401_170248_zpssnygws3v.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170401_170248_zpssnygws3v.jpg.html)

If you’re not sure what that is, it’s the passenger side of the block where the starter used to mount but now the starter is laying on the header with pieces of the block still attached to it. This explains why when I turned the key, I could hear the starter spin, but it wasn’t engaging the flywheel. My first thought was the clutch and/or flywheel exploded, but after seeing the starter laying there, I realized why the starter wasn’t engaging the flywheel.

Looking at the drive shaft revealed the culprit was one of those little 15 cent spiral locks that hold the u-joint cap in place.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170405_204038_zpsqsjiw3cx.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170405_204038_zpsqsjiw3cx.jpg.html)

I don’t know if the spiral lock failed or just came out of the groove, but when it did, it must have rocked the transmission pretty hard. Hard enough that the side of the block broke off or maybe the Quicktime bell housing hit the nose of the starter with enough force to break it off the side of the block!!!

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii131/hlumpp/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170408_130421_zpsqcixbuuc.jpg (http://s263.photobucket.com/user/hlumpp/media/El%20Camino/Yelcamino%20V2/20170408_130421_zpsqcixbuuc.jpg.html)

Looking at this picture, the casting appears to be pretty thin. But how many millions of these blocks are in service on and off the track? At this point, what actually happened is anyone’s guess.

I spent the last week being pissed off, but now it’s time to get up, dust myself off, and get this thing fixed!

With my attitude fixed, I got on the phone with the Driveshaft Shop and ordered a dual CV joint shaft. After they shipped a rear CV flange for the Currie 9”, I reinstalled the T56 and measured for the new shaft. No more spiral locks for me! Step one done.

So now that you are up to date, my next issue is what to do with the engine. Obviously I need a new block. Checking with Summit, a new LS3 block, part # 12623967, is a little over $1500. However, since I have to tear the engine down, I can’t help but think of what I can do to make it better. I happen to have a virgin 6.0L block sitting in my shop so I was thinking I could get an all forged stroker kit for a little more money than a new LS3 block, have some machine work done on the 6.0L block, bolt all the LS3 components on and have a stout 408 cid LS! You know, the silver lining and all that!

My concern is, will all the LS3 components fit on the 6.0L block? Maybe you LS experts can chime in? Does this sound like a good plan?

Wow, that's a real bummer about the engine :( We hope you can get a new one sorted out and back in action before too long!

Badass trailer. That still had to be pricey!!!

Sorry to hear about the failure. I've seen several LS starter mount failers on the net. Yours seems different. I wonder truly what was the root cause though. Hopefully it was the spiral lock as you seem to think.

Best of luck.

The trailer wasn't too bad considering how much a new one is plus upgrades.

Up until the moment it happened, everything was working great. There was about 3000 miles on the combo. One thing that may have helped contribute was I had a rubber trans mount and urethane engine mounts. Again, just guessing, but maybe when the clip came out under load, the trans was able to move enough that the starter mount was the weakest thing so it gave.

Thanks!

Herb, did the driveshaft come all the way out of the car? This is puzzling...
Nice trailer however, for what it's worth.

No the driveshaft didn't come out of the car. When the clip came out, it allowed the driveshaft to flop around on the u-joint while I was going down the front straight over 100 mph - and it did a lot of flopping! I assumed I broke the driveshaft but when I looked under the car, everything looked normal. It wasn't until I got it on the lift that I discovered the missing u-joint clip and the engine damage.

Speaking of damage, just to be safe I brought the T56 to Bowler to have them check it out and they found a broken shift rail guide.

Bowler is fixing the trans, I ordered a dual CV joint shaft from the Driveshaft Shop, and I got a 408" shortblock in the works. :G-Dub:

Wow Herb... You broke a LOT of stuff...just crazy the damage a 15 cent part failure can cause...

You are correct. Big blocks are like old anvils, beat on them all you want and they keep on keeping on!
