Hey Tom, cool build.
Hey Tom, cool build.
Check your private messages.
Thanks, it should be a challenge. Not a lot of room in these little Novas, but if my fuzzy math is correct, it should clear the hood by an inch or so....hopefully.

Hey there,
Great build! We have similar problems so I will be annoying you as well!

I'll be stuffing an LSA blower on a 5.3L with adapters for my '84 Cutlass build. Starting with a lot less parts than you!
Best of luck with your build and will definitely be following along!

Hit me up if you need any help. Ours is just getting on the road now. The heat exchanger, pump, and coolant reservoir are a trick to fit and look good. Good luck.

Thanks, I might need some details on the hood latch you did. I think I will have enough room using the stock heat exchanger but who knows...

I have already installed sub frame connectors that I fabricated. I can jack it up in front of the rear wheel, and it will lift the front tire off the ground. I may look into some fender to core support ties of some kind....traction is going to be an issue....LOL

Believe it or not it is rustoleum satin black. I bought a quart and reduced it 4:1, and added a little Valspar hardener.....I really like the sheen, and you can touch it up with a rattle can if you need to.....

Not this time. I used rustoleum self etching primer. When I do a frame off on the car I will use epoxy, close up all the useless holes and smooth the firewall. Right now just going to get her running and driving and enjoy it for a while. Been two years since I had a hot rod to drive...gotta get my fix......LOL

That sure looks sweet in there! Feels good doesn't it??
Yes sir it does, quite a journey to get to this point. Had to stand back and look at it for a bit.....now it is starting to get fun...
T,
So, I installed the Lokar kit for a column shift. All went as planned, plenty of clearance and got the selector dialed in at the transmission where the range of travel is correct. If you move it too far back the stroke is too short on the column selector, too far forward and the stroke is too long and won't let you select all the gears. About in the middle is just right...
I did notch the frame support to clear the bolt, but don't think it was needed since I set the engine forward 1". Clears the headers, gets all gears and feels factory...

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn59/tmtuma/Mist%20Blue%2066/20151115_100442_zpsjjo753ar.jpg
Next up was the compressor install. I used the Alan grove bracket for a Corvette. Part number 144R A.C. They say it may not work for the LSA, but it does........
A few items of note....
I did move the engine forward as I have said numerous times, probably solely for this reason. The engine frame stand needs to have a hole drilled in it to keep one of the rear compressor bolts from hitting. I used a Sanden 508 compressor, but I understand that the Sanden 708 is almost .25" shorter, so it "might" not hit. I have decided to switch to the Sanden SD7 as it is shorter all the way around. The compressor front ear to pulley distance is less than 1/4" difference, so belt alignment won't be an issue.
Also, I will rework the bracket to allow access to the compressor fittings, as the current configuration won't let that happen. In addition, the #8 fitting on the compressor is very close. Vintage Air makes a "tight fit" fitting, but it might not clear. Too many "might's" for me, so I am switching compressors. Having said all that, the reason it worked on past builds is the accessories were f-body style which is over an inch forward of the Corvette/ CTS accessories drives...
If you will notice in the picture, the supplied tensioner clears the CBR rack just fine...

You're doing good work, Tom. I think I would redo those rear brake lines, too. I'd be worried about hitting the exhaust under compression. I like your use of bulkhead fittings on the lines. Gives it a very clean appearance. Good luck!

Got this neat fitting from Turn1. Solves the power steering issue however, the fitting was for the Toyoda (yes with a D) style pump commonly found on the LS3 Corvette motors. A quick trip on the lathe corrected the issue of the barrel of the fitting being to large, and a hair too long...

I have an Entropy dual pass radiator. I also have an inter cooler now, as well as the AC condenser. So I mocked it up and there was no way all three of those items are going to fit into the space. After doing quite a bit of research I landed on replacing the fans.
The existing fans are 3.75" deep. I found some Spal fans of about the same dimensions except 2.50" deep. Took a gamble and purchased two of them...well lo and behold, they work. I am able to move the radiator back, fit the inter cooler and then the condenser. I may have to notch the hood latch a tad, but nowhere near the problem I had before...
Old fans...

Hey Tom,
I'm in the process of trying to get my Wilwood parking brake cable hooked up as well. Have you got a picture from the opposite direction?
I assume you're using the stock parking brake pedal setup - I'd like to see how you hooked that up to the cable block since the threads are different pitch. Also, how the spring is hooked up on the far end.

Yes, I am using the stock e-brake setup...there is no pedal on a 1st/2nd gen. Nova. There is a handle under the dash that you pull out. The cable has a lead ball on the other end that hooks into a socket on the arm...The spring you see in the picture is the return spring for the cable...
What I did was drilled the threads out of the Wilwood brass block. I put a nut on both sides, so the block can slide along the length of the stock adjustment rod.....

Nice job at taking a fairly aggressively styled modern seat and making it fit an older vehicle well.
Thanks guys, pretty stoked about how they turned out....

Such a cool car! What is the weight on this? I have the same motor in a heavy ZL1 and that car is violent I can only imagine in something lighter with no traction control!

Not sure, but have certified scales at work, I'll drive it out one day and weigh it. Should be right at 3,300......
Yes, it is extremely violent.......don't have enough tire on it to make a difference, but will soon....
I have the utmost respect for high horsepower cars, having driven a few. This thing definitely commands my respect and caution...

Here are the pictures of the reason I did the mini tub....
Rims are 18 x 10 with a 7" backspace. Tires are Sumitomo 295 x 30 x 18. Could have probably done a 35 or 40 AR.....maybe will do that after these wear out...
There is about 1.25 fingers width between the tire and fender lip...
On the way to Discount....

So..........What is your opinion of driving the new car with the LSA over your old non supercharged Nova ?????
Ken
Like you, I am officially spoiled......It is totally a different car. Even having driven other LS3 powered cars, this one is an animal. The power is instantaneous and the torque literally plants you in the seat even through the 2-3 shift.........me thinks I need more car......LOL
I will really have to watch this thing, it can certainly get away from me with the blink of an eye.....
Would I go supercharged again....yes..
Was it worth the hassle trying to fit everything under the hood of this little Nova....yes..
Would I pick a bigger car next time....yes......probably a 3rd gen Nova......

T,[/QUOTE]
As nice as 3rd gens are.....It won't be a pretty as this one!
So after driving and logging for a while, I was having several issues that needed sorting out. Maybe it was me overthinking things or whatever, but they were bugging me none the less. Won't go into all the details.
The main thing was high intake air temps....up around 160. Probably due to several things, inter cooler/lid too small, pump, reservoir too small, cramped engine compartment etc....
Sooo....I made several changes...the biggest one was installing a larger inter cooler system, changing to the ZL1 lid, and adding a larger reservoir....All those things apparently fixed the issue, as now my temps are down around 120 degrees, and I am not seeing as much timing getting pulled on the scanner...I'll call it a win and look into changing up the air intake to add a fresh air box under the fender later on.......enough blabbing, onto the pictures...
Larger inter cooler system. Stacked two coolers this time instead of one..

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn59/tmtuma/Mist%20Blue%2066/20170416_125534_zpskpxwefqh.jpg
And finally, ZL1 cover. The new lid fit with no issues, but the cover touched the hood ever so slightly. A little trimming on the ribs of the hood and we are good to go...

Thanks, You sir will find out soon enough....LOL....yes, it is radical to say the least now that I am getting it all dialed in. Been tuning on the transmission and learning quite a bit about HP tuners. I have it now to where I can literally shift the trans with my foot at part throttle driving....WOT is a whole other universe..... :geezer:

4L60E with ALL billet guts.........hope it doesn't blow up, that would be an expensive mess.......LOL
T,
That would be an expensive mess. While cruising around, have you watched your trans temp? I like where you put your cooler, but I'm wondering how well it works in that location.

I had a plate cooler, but ran out of room with the inter coolers....I routed the trans lines into the radiator cooler. With the plate cooler temps hovered around 150-160 even when I was beating on it a little....now they are in the 190-200 range.....going to have to put the plate cooler back on and abandon the radiator cooler all together...
Engine runs about 185 all the time, so I am not cooling the trans fluid to my liking...

No Power Tour this year..........Since Charley talked us into going on the Good-Guys Road Tour.......We lost interest in the Power Tour..........The GG Tour is way better.........The Nomad is ripped apart awaiting parts from a Vendor I bought stuff from ..........Let's just say I used bad Judgement in buying what I thought was a "Engineered" system...........Pretty $ad.......

Not without spending 5-600 for a custom one. I looked for a few weeks, finally settled on these....
Tom,
Is that the factory p.s. cooler?
No, it's a small cooler I bought from Jegs.....since the reservoirs are so small, I mainly wanted some more fluid capacity...

I'll have to look into that. I did the Cruisin' the Coast two years ago. Much better than the tour, not as much driving and over 7K hot rods..all in one place....

The GoodGuys Hall of Fame tour is limited to 50 cars.... and the 50 cars from the following year - get first dibs on the next year. It's the best organized best run most fun tour ever. Try to get on it. There's a couple people on it that are sketchy - Lillard being one of them..... otherwise it's a pure hoot.
I think it starts at Dave Kindigs shop this year.
