IFS - Front Steer vs. Rear Steer

Hi all,

I'm in the process of building my first PT style car. It's a '66 Fastback that had an R&C kit already installed in it. The issue with this IFS and the windsor engine is the front sump. It's design doesn't allow the engine to be moved back without raising it. However, if the rack can be moved to the rear of the cross member, the engine could easly be moved back the lowered.

My question is, what kind of issues am I going to run into if I do this?

The current set up has:

225/45/18
8" wheel with 6.25 BS
14" brakes
Tire CL of 52.72
Wilwood Spindle
-1.5" Scrub

As you can see from the mock up, the engine is moved back about 4-5". It's also sitting 4-5" higher in the front and at a 5* angle.

Any input or advise would be appreciated.

My advice,

get a new pan in favor for a rear sump.
Your gonna do a lot of modifications that may not work right for a $700 oil pan.

It is a rear sump... the front sump is required for the oil pump...

you can't use the front steer rack as a rear steer, unless of course you switch it to right had drive..........

LOL!! It would look a little funny sitting backwards on the front bumper trying to steer it!!

You could lower the rack, how much room do you think you need? Might help your bump steer. Combination of a lowered rack and modified pan perhaps?

edit...looks like its sitting on the lower arm mount though

I need about 4". I can't lower the rack and the pan can't be modified due to the oil pump.

I spoke to one of the manufacturers that builds these this morning and it's a no go on changing it to rear steer....

Dry sump?Maybe not even a true dry sump but just a crank driven oil pump. I think Rob from No Limit did this on his original slant cab F100 pro touring truck so he could lower the engine further.

I've got nothing to say about the pan/rack issue but that induction and the cowl vents are pretty dang neat!

That looks promising, I'll look into it... a dry sump pan will get me 3" lower. Thank you!

The kicker here... I sold a Roush Yates dry sump engine that I was going to put into this car.... :bang:

I did the same thing when I installed a heidt's mustang II in my 65. I ended up installing a Peterson wet/vac sump pump on the motor. Ended up cutting the front sump of the pan off and welding in a flat piece on metal.
