View Full Version : Better Grow a Mullet!

So, we've spent some time trying to get the FAST EZ EFI 2.0 to run this motor. If you look back, you'd see that the Callies Magnum XL crank that started this whole build ( destroked LS2 to mimic a DZ302 in a Camaro) doesn't have a provision for a crank sensor. It was built to run a carb and distributor in a specific race class. FAST sent us a crank wheel and trigger for an SBC and we adapted it to the front of the pulley system.
Long story, short, it just doesn't work, even though FAST is positive it will.
I pulled the plug.
We're expecting a 416ci LS3 based Mamo Motorsports built motor on Wednesday. It will get the FAST XFI Sportsman EFI and keep the look I want in this car. We lose some RPM, we gain some weight and certainly gain about 125hp.
This destroked LS2 gets a GMPP front timing cover that takes a distributor. Might get dual quads that I have, might get something else, but I have a 31 Ford to put it in. I think it will bug some guys... it looks like a Ford motor, but has GM stampings on it? :)
JJ, this project has fought you since the beginning, so keep pushing. You'll get there. So...the issues with the efi? No idle?
Did you get your flush glass installed?

We couldn't get the timing right. It was just too much to fight.
Haven't ordered the flush glass yet.

Where we sit, waiting for a new oil pan and baffle, since it's a 4" stroke and a low clearance application...
Driving me nuts.
At least I got to weld on AN20 fittings to the water pump and radiator... that's a -20 on my thumb. Seems a bit silly, but it's the look I want.

Just WOW!!
Is that a GM performance crate motor or???

It's built by Mamo Motorsports. A wee bit more juice than a GM crate.
All my other cars will be done with GMPP connect and cruise crates though. I've learned my lesson with the LS2 that came out. No more "it should work" applications. Tried and true will be my new name of the game.

I hear ya! That's exactly what's in the '40 Ford Pinkee's is building for me. I've messed with enough of this stuff now to know how much engineering GM has put into this stuff. It's hard to beat it unless you're going for much more power than what they offer.

Yep - although this Mamo motor is loads more than any GMPP motor, so it does have that going for it. It's still much simpler than the LS2 based RPM motor that came out of this car, which is also getting simpler.

I'm surprised that you couldn't get the Fast EZ EFI to work --- it really only needs a tach signal - which can be taken off the MSD box tach driver..... but obviously if the trigger isn't signaling the MSD box to fire correctly - then the tach signal is no good.
I'd have thought a crank trigger assembly off the balancer ala drag cars and many others - would do nicely for the signal. But who knows?

That's what we did.
We were using a FAST XIM box with a SBC crank trigger on the front of the crank reporting timing to to the EZ EFI 2.0 system. Thing is, the EZ EFI takes limited functions. EFI sportsman is "Supposed to work" but when push came to shove, they said it's better to run a distributor, which this motor will get, but then I didn't want that in this Camaro. The LS looks more like a Ford motor at this point...
Funny thing, the Mamo motor is getting EFI Sportsman anyway, but now has a standard LS crank and cam sensor, so it will all run natively without concern for square or sine wave inputs. We went simpler.
Next ones will be ALL GM, no aftermarket EFI.

Motor specs.
It's Chevy orange. Has a chromo crank.
Connects to the TR6060 via a pretty clutch.

So, after everything we went through, FAST wants their box back, as they think it's in the ECM.
Holy carp.

I think it's cost me about an LS9.

As some of you know, I thought about picking up some stuff from Modern Classics Interior.
It arrived today.
Yeah, I went for it. He still owes me side panels or 500.00.
Door panels, dash and center console. Will be covered in leather and very nice gray paint. The gel coat looks ready for paint.
I have vintage air billet vents, Dakota digital gauges for it. Should look good.
Waiting for the rear panels, as they were in the molds with modifications for the rear mini tubs.

On a different note, this is still getting worked on. It's a test mule for the most part. Better IRS tax deduction that way :).
We swapped out the EZ EFI for an aftermarket intake with a GM computer to control it all. All the F.A.S.T stuff is going back. Dyno says 627hp for this car.
The original destroked motor for this is running via dual carbs and a Ford distributor and going into a 35 Chevy on an all aluminum AWD corvette suspeneded chassis... yah, a Winter's quick change differential, with C7 suspension in the front, with the original Forgelines in this thread. My wife wants a race car.
My shop also took orders to build 5 of these, so we're motoring on those. Granted, they got connect and cruise LS7's, with a cam swap to get more HP and more fun, but the rest of the cars are wide body, carbon fiber affairs. C7 front suspension with a different vendor's sub frame and IRS. Hot rods with a 36 month, 36K mile warranty? Yep.
Building 5 at a time is a lot of fun ;).
I am heading to the shop today to work on my own projects. This is getting Fesler flush mount glass... might as well just suck up the ship times. Might get better with 6 orders? Who knows.
My best to everyone out there. Life's been busy.

So Martin called me today.
Remember the original motor we built for this, the "DZ331" based on an LS2?
It was replaced with (pictures).
I also have a complete C7 Corvette Chassis, that motor, an engine and trans from a TBSS and a 34 Chevy body... do you smell what I am cooking? Yep, AWD street rod on the Forgelines I posted earlier in the thread.
11 projects going, one just might get finished!

Yeah, had to use other means to get his attention.
So, we pulled the steel off the front of this car, to go carbon fiber... everything.
Fitting it all up. It's not easy. We had to make some of our own pieces. Of course, everything's painted now and going on.
I do need to replace the door handles. It fits my 2017 Corvette Z06 wheels nicely.
The red TA is in for the same treatment. Our 9th build like this. It's really nice working with vendors like DSE and AME here at BRE. Maybe my customer, the owner of the GT350 will show you what we did with it. :Tomcat:

Thanks. Glad for the responses, thought this thread was dead.
Still working out some of those details. Like I don't like the turn signal housings in front... want to find some billet ones. Have glass going in shortly, same with interior. It's hard finding the balance, as I normally go nuts with sound systems and billet stuff. My C15 is a good example of that, but I've driven it 300miles in two years.
I am swapping out the black grill for a silver one. I do like the wide body. I have a customer that calls his the "dually". :)
I also have to fix the clutch in this car, it's on/off with no ability to feather. Makes getting it onto a trailer tough.
