NorCal Shelby Club has not opened registration yet -- but this event will sell out QUICKLY...

http://www.norcal-saac.org/mininats/

I will, once again, be taking the Siegmeister and both the cars to this event.... and have hired Ron Sutton to help us with management and race tech. His info and help are amazing...

Since the NorCal Shelby Thunderhill event -- I have new rotors - pads, and a new master cylinder purchased thru Ron.... for the Mustang. I have also mounted up a set of Hoosier A6's for this event. I've been running the R6... but we'll see how this softer compound works.

For the Lotus -- I've mounted up a set of Yokohama A005's in SOFT compound... and changed shifter cables from the sloppy factory versions to race versions. And added some close-out panels around the rear LCA's. We'll see if Sieg can set a new track record while keeping the car intact.

I plan to run both the cars in the Green group this event. If he passes me at any time - I reserve the right to "pit maneuver" him at the next corner.

I also plan to put Sieg in the Mustang for a session or two (actually thinking about just running each driver/car for one day - then swapping for the next day). It will be fun to see the smile on his face when he gets to drive a car with real power and small tires!

According to Google, it's 1779 miles from my place to Sonoma Raceway. NorCal is gorgeous that time of year, right?

I remember my first trip to Northern California. I was in San Franscisco and drove up to Sonoma for the day. As I turned the corner from 37 onto 121, I passed the entrance sign to Infineon Raceway. It took about 5 seconds for that to register, and I slammed on the brakes and did a u-turn in the middle of 121. I drove back, and the place was wide open. It was a weekday, and some cars were running practice laps, others were being worked on in the garages. I parked and just walked around the track for a while. Such a cool experience!

I am wondering about running the A6's (autocross tires)
on the race track.. it was always my understanding that
they heated up quicker but will not sustain the longer runs
of heat required by the race track and 20 minute sessions

Heat cycling always help the tire last longer but not sure
if that type of heat cycling will work... I do understand
that race slicks have several compounds from soft to hard
just wondering about the A6's??

Ron or anyone had any experience with them

WE are trying the A6 because of the tire temp measurements of the R6's when running Thunderhill.

We ARE not racing.... and I'm certainly no race car driver.... a real race car driver would most certainly generate too much heat... but I don't. I also have a complete set of R6's mounted on another set of wheels -- so if the temps tells us the A6 is getting too hot... a simple switch will be made. WE are doing this based on the science of our own measurements, rather than, what someone told someone else's buddy one time.

The tire pressures I WAS using were near but not close enough... actual measurements of the tire temps and ending pressures etc gave us the info needed to set the tires right. Now - that's the new numbers being used instead of just kinda sorta someone else is using X pressure.

I have quite a bit of experience running and/or testing most of the Hoosier tire line. In addition to being a great autocross tire, the A6's are a great track tire as long as you don't over heat them. And by overheat them I mean run them at 230°+ for several laps. That would shorten their life considerably.

What I saw at the track was ... by the end of the weekend ... Greg was driving the hot rod at 90-95% ... braking moderately ... being smooth with the throttle, braking & steering ... which all keeps the tires happy ... and cooler. As he pushed the car harder & ran those 2.08-2.10 lap times, the tires came back in the mid-to-high 160° range.

Another part of the reason for cooler temps is the track sessions are short ... 20 minutes ... about 9 laps. Frankly, it takes a couple laps for the R6's to really come in. So for 2 of the 9 laps you need to be more conservative.

Greg will have better braking on the car for Sonoma, so the rotor temps coming up will also increase the tire temps. I think that plus the softer compound will put us 20-30° higher temps with the A6's ... putting them in the 180-190° range ... which is right in their sweet spot. And these tires will warm up quicker & provide grip the driver can be confident in MUCH earlier in a session.

Greg's goal is to have more fun. IMHO, if you tow your hot rod all the way to the track and run 4 sessions of 9 laps ... 36 laps ... and we can make 8 of those laps more fun (with more grip) ... that achieves the goal. The A6's will wear quicker than R6's, but when you factor in all the cost to go run a track day, it's minor compared to having 22% more "fun."

That's the reason I suggested A6's for Greg's Hot Rod.

Oh --- I know I'm eating my words.... but I still have to sling arrows while ducking for cover don't I?

I really didn't bring Ron in to go faster... Rather - to make the car EASIER to drive -- which happens to equate into going faster.

I think my points have always been mistaken as "I could care less" --- which is only partly true....

What IS true - is that I have never been willing to mess with stuff I know NOTHING about -- And I've been around just barely long enough to know that most people that THINK they know what they're doing - DON'T. Therefore -- I'd prefer to do nothing - than I would mess up what I know I already have.

Once Ron was willing - and able - to become part of the team... NOW I'm ready to do what he recommends. Once the car is as dialed in as I want to take it... there will be very little if any changes. The whole thing with Ron is to get the car to an acceptable race ready point - and go back to sitting on my ass.

Having TWO cars made all of this abundantly clear to me that one of them wasn't up to snuff - and the other is so much faster - that it needed to be made safer and easier.

Funny what I've learned already --- which is the OPPOSITE of what LOGIC would have told me to do.... i.e., my brake compound may need to be LESS aggressive rather than MORE aggressive... This is funny because most guys have to go for "MORE" is better and BIGGER is better... and I'm learning that it's more about what's RIGHT. Kinda like a camshaft. Once a guy learns that the cam needs only do what it's intended purpose is -- the "bigger is better" goes right out the window.

This is where a real pro like Ron comes into play. We'll get it right - rather than just toss a bunch of big name expensive parts at it, and then wonder why it still doesn't work...

Guys forget about what the actual cost is for me to run a track day weekend in California... that's a roughly 1500 mile round trip in "the rig"... so fuel down and back is $1000 just in truck fuel.

Two cars with two drivers - entry fees another $1000

Race gas = $600ish

Cheeseballs = $5

Ron Sutton = PRICELESS

Tires are just consumables... ditto brakes. While they're not giving these away... they ARE just all part of the fun. Fun, to me, means being able to go out and run @ 80 or 90% and be able to KEEP UP with the pack. I don't have the DNA (anymore) that says I have to lead the pack... I just want to go out and run and keep up, and pass some guys, while others pass me.

These weekends are made SPECIAL by seeing my friends... dishing crap... (that's free).... LEARNING.... which to me is always important. If I hoover (or should this be changed to HOOSIER?) thru an extra set of tires and pads - so be it.

Please hurry! I've had 5 more birthdays since your motor was dyno'd... Remember! Change your oil ANNUALLY if letting a motor sit. And rotate it by hand so that the valve springs aren't taking a set. If you plan to let the motor sit for more than a few months (already past due!) back all the rockers off to allow the springs to be free.

Ron thanks for the info on the tires
I started in the auto crossing world and changed
over about 12 years ago with Chet's mustang
(My old car) then went to the Pantera

I had custom alignment set the mustang up and
just drove it. Very easy car to run as it would go
anywhere on the track

The Pantera took a little while to dial in and
is not as easy to drive and I am sure could
be better but still not bad for a street car

Ron thanks for the info on the tires
I started in the auto crossing world and changed
over about 12 years ago with Chet's mustang
(My old car) then went to the Pantera

I had custom alignment set the mustang up and
just drove it. Very easy car to run as it would go
anywhere on the track

The Pantera took a little while to dial in and
is not as easy to drive and I am sure could
be better but still not bad for a street car

Pantera racer NorCal Bob

You're welcome Bob.

Isn't that interesting. Most folks would think the Pantera would be easy to drive fast. But I find things often are not what they appear.

I cant think of a better way of spending my 48th bday than wadding up my blue car in turn 3. But seriously, this sounds like a great bday gift to me!!!

At Sonoma -- there's many more turns than just T3 that can bite a guy. Pete and I have both spun in T7... I leave the paint from the wall on the car as a reminder of how not to go into that turn...

There's the wall on your left at T11 -- pretty high speed and a passing zone for our group -- then the wall on your left at T12 EXIT... it can be good for a scrape... if you're running NASCAR close or just loose it a little... And last time I was there my run group at the time (red) had two cars totaled in two different sessions out of T6 AKA "The Carousel"... one was a modified weird Porsche with a crappy driver (I'd ran with him before and he SUCKED)... and one was a brand spanking new Shelby GT500 that hadn't even gotten his license plate yet!

Show respect - and unlike me - don't think your f'n Parnelli Jones - and you'll L O V E this track... and have a fantastic time.

Peronally - I'm surprised you're not going to Hot August Nights.

I've never been to Hot August nites before, my mother in law live up there and works the event every year and was hopin this year will be the first, but my bday shares with my lil sister and my brothers is three days later. I'm actually supposed to be in Bend that weekend celebrating. I would much rather be driving it at high speed than walking around a parking lot looking at everybody else's trophies. I mean, that's fun too, but I'd rather be behind the wheel, much rather.

Want you guys to watch this video of driving lines for Sonoma....

Watch for T3 spin by the Outlaw car - Blue - This corner is a quick flick from T2 left-hander to a little inside off camber right-hander @ T3. I personally LOVE this corner (never can explain things like that -- some corners you just feel you have dialed in - and others you just never own 'em).

At 3:04 ish pay attention to trying to deep drive into T7.... and watch what happens as he tries to brake while turning into it.

Trust me --- this is EXACTLY what happened to me - when I'd come down out of the Carousel (T6) and got a LATE point by just coming into T6 corner worker station... I jammed down a gear (love that Jerico!) unsettling the rear end - WOT quickly to juice it around the guy and then found myself AT the turn -- needing to turn AND brake from a higher entry speed than "normal".... so you straighten it out because there is plenty of tarmac there ------ but now MARBLE CITY! And around you go! Now looking at the headlights of the ahole you just smartly blew by... while his eyes are big as dinner plates... and you're crapping yourself... feeling like the moron rookie (that you are).

highly doubt my car will be ready but its only 10 min from my house.

Any other ford guys going to run at the ASCS for Hot august nights should make the few hour drive after the ASCS race ends friday in Reno.

Weld, Is there anyway you could talk to the shelby club and see if you could get them to turn the other cheek? let some non-fords come and run? and extend an Invite to Bill Howels caravan that will only be a few hours away? Im sure those guys wouldnt mind taking the quick trip down to run their cars at Sonoma before heading back home.

I would try to talk to them - but this is the MINI NATS - which is a big event for the club - and they didn't even used to allow anything other than Mustangs etc for the event. It will be sold out and packed with cars... So I don't think they're going to want to do anything like that.

Glad to hear it, Craig. I'll make sure and bring along an extra-large coffee on Saturday (and drink it myself). They'll probably make me park off in the boonies between runs, but we'll definitely have to see who has the highest car, and get the photo-op. Unless you got a paint job . . . no, mine will still be the ugly winner...

I'll look forward to being beaten by another Falcon of the very same vintage. That will be a kind of cool normally reserved for legions of Mustang and Camaro owners...

Ron: This is my favorite track, too. However, I have only lapped it on various bikes. I do not have a track worthy car. Well, I do not have a track worthy budget. Fine, fine, it's the budget-disapproving wife! :D

Side note: I find it interesting that you guys refer to T2 as a slight left and T3 as a flat to off camber right at the top of the hill. To us knee-draggers T2 is the dial-a-slide right at the top of the hill and 3a/3 is the left-right that dips then rises to a crest.

Lots of good memories. Think the last time I ran at Sonoma was in 06.
Got bumped sideways once in 5 by a buddy of mine, recovered smoothly and kept going.
Passed 3 cars from the inside of 7a heading toward 8 with two wheels off on the passenger side cause I was fired up I wasn't making the lap times I wanted. Took a rash of crap from one of the guys I passed in the paddock for that one. Same day ran a best 1:56 and through a rod bearing doing it. :headspin:

On a "medium budget" --- Maison Fleurie..... Super cute -- walk to everything... small... showing some age but I'd stay there in a heartbeat.

NOTE -- ONLY THE BAKERY BUILDING -- GROUND FLOOR... don't get one of the minuscule rooms upstairs!

On my budget and where we stay when we are there -- The Meadowood.

You can pretend your newlyweds and do all the stuff that ya shoulda done back then... Take her here and you'll stay married no matter what you do in the future.

#1 -- I "THINK" we run the short T7 version and I "think" the picture is long T7 version. OUR T7 is basically one big looped turn... You don't try to make a double apex out of it - that's the newb way around.

#2 -- FOR EVERYONE -- there are always open track primers you should read - that are just good general driving info - in fact they should be mandatory IMHO.

#3 -- Track TUTORIALS

Video is okay -- but reading and digesting each corner sticks with you more. Again this is just IMHO.

I've begun studying:

1. I watched some videos from that purple '67 fastback ("512"). That car just seems like it's playing with everyone. I'll hope to see it in person. I want to get all up in its 3-link.

2. I had to watch some footage of Michael Eisenberg's (sorry if I butchered spelling, but hey, he gets yellow Konis, and mine are only red) most awesome black 1963 Falcon ever (same vintage as mine and Craig's). He's got 110 horsies on me, and takes people down--more importantly, that car is just awesome. I need a more reasonable rear end gear, but oh well. People are starving somewhere...

I've only been to Sonoma/Sears Point/Infineon to watch bikes (AMA Superbikes & Supermoto). I've never even been there for a car event, but I have an in-law who does the NASCAR thing there; we really only talk at X-Mas. I don't even really know what to call the place now, but I think Cortex has a shop there, so maybe we should just call it that...

Check out http://www.fairmont.com/sonoma/ too. You can find deals for there (much more likely for weekdays as you are considering). I think your wifey would love it.

As far as wineries, it is generally best to pick an area and then plan a mix of wineries in that cluster to hit. Some really killer places up north off the beaten path like Calistoga that have much less traffic (tourists and otherwise).

We can talk more after you make your flight arrangements. :D

Quintessa is a beautiful winery - not to mention excellent stuff... You need to make an appointment there and they offer lunch tours etc. If you need help there - I'm a rather "good" customer... and can certainly make a call for you.

Pahlmeyer doesn't do tastings - great wine but no go on the visitors...

One of the most interesting buildings and stories... is Nickel and Nickel. Their wines are crazy complicated because they do single vineyard bottling and I think there's like 29 or so... So you can't just go by the BRAND... Some we like - some we think suck.

Kapcsandy is in Yountville.... they do some unfiltered stuff that needs to be handled a little differently than your average bottle of wine...

We like Duckhorn... but I've never been to their winery

If you feel like you really want to step up your game...

Araujo and Colgin Estate.... bring a wheelbarrow... but they're yummy and worth the price.

Caymus is another one that Gwen likes....

And probably the rarest hardest to get wine in our cellar is REVANA

We also have a lot of Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in the cellar... it's good drinkable wine that's "reasonable" given what Gwen likes... and they are always having sales with ONE PENNY shipping - which I like to take advantage of.

I don't drink... but used to (30 years in AA now)... and we have a small cellar with about 1600 bottles in it... Gwen and her friends like their wine! I don't know much but I have a good nose. I can go to a tasting and smell the stuff and tell her which one she's going to want to buy. The cellar is all about "inventory" so she's drinking '06's or '07's when the stores are selling '09's and '10's stomped yesterday. LOL

She cooks with wine - sometimes she even puts some in the food.

WINE! It's how classy people get wasted!

ALL OF THE ABOVE ARE NAPA VALLEY

Then if you want to have a little fun -- and try your hand at driving a twisty --- jump over the "Oakville Grade Rd" to see B.R. Cohn in the SONOMA Valley. Bruce Cohn is a hot rodder and a buddy and he is owner of the winery.... and also just happens to be the manager of the Doobie Brothers... lots of guitars and pics of stuff there besides just wine stuff.

I will try and come out for the next big event.

I'm truly sorry you won't make this event! But it IS an annual event... and with a bit more planning - maybe a group of us can do the event and then bomb around the wine country together.

I know NOTHING about Suspension - Shocks - tires... I've never looked inside an automatic transmission...

:D

I really don't know anything about wine except what GWEN and her pals like to drink... and the names I listed there are what's in our wine cellar from that area. I've been to them - I do ALL of the buying... I've smelled them all and know which ones I'd like. Other than that - that's it as far as wine knowledge.

I like to buy wine and lay it up.... figure 300 plus bottles per year consumption -- 5 year lay up period -- so a guy needs some "inventory". We're not into buying "flights" - to me that's a giant waste of time - one bottle of one year? That's not enjoying wine - that's collecting for collecting sake... around my dump - the wine gets served until the last man hollers uncle... It's like cars - they're built to be driven - wine is bought to be drank. :disgusted: :D

So...if a man were wanting to come out for the weekend and then have the wife fly out on a Monday to spend a few days in wine country and visit a few wineries, where would be a good place to stay and places to go?

not big on wine but these are the two we visit every now and then and so far everyone I have recommended has been very happy.

Just to remind folks, this event's now less than a month away (registration may still have spots available, but maybe not). In the mean time, I've changed so much crap on my car in the last month that I'm now afraid to drive it. I'll try not to show up with tires that are too new...

There's 143 Cars registered so far.... If they run a BLUE group (fastest driver /car combo which are considered RACE CARS) they usually keep each group (4 groups) to 35 cars... so that's 140 total.

There's 18 cars registered in BLUE group.... and a few Shelby/Mustangs registered for "Parade laps".... so it's going to be a full house. The car show should be packed!

I'll be there, wife is out of town for the weekend so me and my 20 mo. old boy are gonna head out for a bit in the morning. I'm sure he'll love it, hes always stealing my PHR magazine and flipping through the pages making car noises.

Then a local RIB and chilli cook off in the afternoon.

Cars & Meat sounds like a total guys weekend to me. too bad giving beer to a 20 mo old is frowned upon or else the weekend would be complete!

All cat fights aside, I did notice some big-deal signups for Saturday, including Maier and Cortex (Mike and Filip). These represent very cool, highly developed Mustangs, and this time around, I should actually have time to appreciate the scenery, and maybe witness the catfighting in person...

I also saw Mike Musto on the list--he's the Web TV car guy, right? Cool. We've all probably seen his show...

As yet, I seem to have the only Falcon signed up, representing what might very well be the worst paint on the track. Better now than later. Heck yeah!

Ugh... I am so bummed I have to miss this event with it right here in my own back yard. I drive past Sears Point 2x a day and have been looking forward to it since Thunder Hill... that I missed because the car was still in the shop.

I have had one issue after another getting the correct parts from Hurst DL for my TKO600 kit and Ridetech over the past 3-4 months. I wont go into details but it is the old - wrong parts in the order and the you need this part to make that part work scenario. With the shipping times back and forth we've killed almost 2 months.

The silver lining is I have a new TKO 600, new triple adjust RT front shocks and new RT control arms because the new FOX shocks don't fit the old control arms... but they didn't tell me that at first. :bang: I also have a new ECU and system controller now too. So we should be good to go.

Of course, I should have the car back later this week but with zero miles on the new clutch and tranny so I didn't pull the trigger on registering fearing this would happen. Now my wife has guilted me into going to Monterey & Santa Cruz this weekend so I wont see you guys. But I do get a nice weekend away at the beach.

I will be in Pleasanton for WCN's so look forward to seeing some of you there and I'm in on the next Norcal event for sure! Have fun boys and I will be checking in each night for play by play, spirited banter with Flash & Weld and pics.

Yeah it does. We'll hook up one of these days.

A new tranny, better shocks and better camber & caster set up on the new control arms are worth it... but come with a lighter wallet. To RT's credit, they did help me out on the pricing because of the issues.

It was a great time! Couldn't ask for better weather or overall track conditions. Greg was really starting to fly and feeling confident in the little pony midway through Saturday's sessions and it threw a shoe again. You know when you're throttle steering it through T7 you're having a good time! First it appeared to be a fuel delivery issue (pressure regulator) and on Sunday's third session it failed.

Hopefully the tear down of that motor will reveal the cause(s) of the reliability issues. When that motor is working proper it sounds great and more importantly the power delivery is controllable and abundant. That equals fun as all get out to drive which is what this is all about! Considering how he treats the motor at the very least he should get two or three seasons without ANY issues IMO.

The first session on Saturday Greg is right in front of me leaving the hot pits and punches it a little to test traction and leaves two 15' blackies..........and I'm just smiling thinking how great it is to be a kid again. :D

Sears Point is an awesome track, no time to relax and plenty of opportunity to get in trouble which makes it very exciting. Pictures are coming.

Having never been on the track before the first day was learning lines especially since I didn't get a chance to do a track walk. Saturday night I walked the track by myself and learned A LOT which helped my lines and confidence on Sunday. My last session on Sunday was the most enjoyable as I was confidently starting to carry a fair amount of speed, enough that I had to tell myself to keep it in check because my lines and techniques are still far from what I'd consider refined. The little Lotus is very user friendly and amazingly potent. Greg proved that Sunday afternoon against some very serious car and driver combinations.

RE: The pony motor

My guess is it went lean. All the messing around with the carb trying to make it work without the regulator may or may not have had something to factor in IDK. I was hard in to it when whatever it was let go. The exhaust was almost white instead of the usual dove grey.

Doesn't really matter to me... we'll just build it over or put something else in. It'll be up and running for the October 5 mile at Thunderhill. Should have all new suspension as well as tires and wheels... so that will be a complete new tuning and set up challenge. Ron Sutton Race Technologies will be on the job dialing it all in.

GAETANO..... all I saw when I checked my mirrors was you getting smaller and falling further behind. Lucky for you I had a pressure regulator fail and had to go to the pits to see what was wrong. That probably saved you some embarrassment. The skinny little 245's out gunning the steam rollers. Maybe more motor will help you next event? LOL

First session on Saturday in green group during lap 2 or 3 everybody was reminded that this is a dangerous and expensive hobby. Story is he spun in his own fluid coming out of T8. Mike in our group was a couple cars behind and said he had to catch his car coming through the section and was pretty sure something was on the track.

From what I heard the car let go then hooked up and shot left off track and moved a 7,000 pound K wall and thankfully the driver was fine. I'm guessing the speed through that section is 80-90 mph and the K wall is 50-75' off the track.

http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-4rsfNd9/0/XL/i-4rsfNd9-XL.jpg

What this reinforced for me is the first session is an acclamation period for the driver and car. Pushing 9 or 10 tenths first session out isn't in anyones best interest IMO.

What's the track like today?

Are you on your game or maybe feeling slightly off?

Is the car near a 100% or was it apart prior to the event and not tested or thoroughly safety checked?

Could that fluid leak issue have been detected prior with a couple easy laps or could the crash have been prevented running the first session at 70-80%?

All speculation but worthy of consideration.......again IMO.

Because you sold me a LEMON POS.... and the fact that the Pressure regulator took a dump -- having nothing to do with Tony Oddo..... but the carb/motor combo found it difficult to run with 14 psi of fuel puking past the seats and flooding the motor. NOBODY EVER SAID we screwed with the jetting --- which wasn't touched. The float level was adjusted in an effort to keep the pig of a motor running so I could make it out to the track.

I plan on running T-Hill with you guys in mid October (17th ish?), right after driving home from the G-Guys Texas road trip....Got the roll bar back half in, waiting on custome door panels for the down bars, but i 'll feel a lot more comfortable having a roll bar and harness at the trac as opposed to just a seat belt....till then, keep it sunny side up:topic:

So I know we "spar" about passing and lap times and on and on... it's all good fun.

The thing I think about when everyone on here is spending big dough to have huge horsey power - and the latest in fat tires... and the most awesome clutch in the history of the universe.... is --- I bought this Lotus for 60 grand... and spent another 10 or so grand on getting it race worthy... so about 1/3rd to a half of what building a Camaro runs these days... and other than change oil between events all you do to drive this car is set the tire pressures. Yes -- there's some passing going on in this short video. This little POS car makes it appear as though the others in the group are applying brakes on the straights...LOL

The first 'Vette is a ZR1 that is tracked regularly and you've seen it fly by the Mustang in other videos.

I hope to bring the Pantera to Thunderhill in October
Checkered flag (started by Pantera owners) is running

Pantera has been a pain lately..going to the Italiano show
in Monterey next week and it seems to not like car shows
Burned the rotor up one week.. on the hook home and running
an hour later.. then on fire the next week.. blew an oil cooler line
but it burned mostly oil on the headers that set the air cleaner
on fire and killed the motor.. two squirts with the Fire Extinquisher
and it was out.. what a mess to clean up. it is still dripping oil
out of the frame rails..

All good now and new lines.. thinking about that suppression
system I never put on the car

Gaetano was registered in Green group (Advanced) which is the group that Charley, Pete, Chet, Mike and I all run. Blue group (Expert) is WAY faster than Green and the cars/driver combinations are "racers" vs what I'd
call our group "track rats".

Dave (#9) is OTEC and can run any group he chooses. A Green group stickered car can not run in Blue group - but a blue group car could be run in Green if the session isn't full. Sieg even managed to run the Lotus in Red while sporting a Green group sticker.

Sundays are generally far less crowded than Saturdays and are more fun to me with less traffic to contend with in all groups.

THIS is exactly why the Mustang was scheduled in to get some upgrades. Ron Sutton will do the math for you (you PAY HIM) and show you why you shouldn't be running 1965 STOCK ball joints and bearings and spindles --- when you're also running fat sticky Hoosiers etc. The stock stuff just isn't up to the task....

Racing is expensive (we really don't race but that's the best description) - it gets way more expensive quickly when your car comes off track on a rollback. I'd rather be a little proactive and fix it before it happens.

Here's the other thing... When your car works better (thank you Ron Sutton Race Technologies!) you go faster and harder... which puts even MORE stress on parts. The tire temps creep up - the brake temps creep up ----- and all that heat is put into the bearings and spindles... Why would a guy try to build an 800 hp motor - quadruple the tire sizes from stock - and not upgrade these other critical parts?

Busted! I got head-faked by Ron rushing to get Greg's tires set and Pete and Greg appeared to be hurrying to get fuel. So I just suited up and headed down to the hot pit and the cars had just been released and they were all waving at me to go go go! LOL

As it worked out there was about 50% less cars on track than the green group, in the no passing zones their pace killed your lap times, but in the gaps I could really focus on my lines and rhythm vs maintaining pace which I really needed having never been to this track before. Being trapped in the esses would result in 2:20-2:25 laps, I think the best finish line to finish lap in this video was a 2:02. Which according to Ron's timing was a couple seconds faster than many cars were running in the green session I was supposed to be in. :sieg:

I'm with you, this is serious business.

I actually think that it's people "DON'T KNOW" because until recently - we didn't have a Ron Sutton on board that knows and is willing to share.... I really think it's something we just don't put much thought to. We (as a group) are not racers -- we're basically hot rodders.... and we hot rod what we know. More motor - big brakes - big fat sticky tires - Fancy paint and a little gap spray. That all works until you go to start to beat on this stuff!

The reason I'm even mentioning it is to RAISE AWARENESS for others here that are more and more trying to track their cars.

Isn't that the same set up you currently have? Was it just the ballpoint or did the spindle fail, I can't tell.

Chicken and the egg..... did he have an off track excursion and cause breakage or did he break and go off track? I didn't talk to him so I can't answer the question.

Here's what I do know - and what I do think about - now that RS has brought this all to my little pea brain...

Speeds on these tracks are quite high... and that K wall starts rushing up at you real quick - like at the exit of T10 in Sonoma. I don't need to smack that because of a few parts that can easily be uprated. Frankly -- If I knew I was only going to take myself "out" -- okay -- but I'd sure hate to take out one or two other innocent guys with me because I was negligent (now that I know the dangers/potential issues).

The weak point in these cars ... and by that I mean ALL 60's-80's production cars from GM, Ford & Chrysler ... are the:
1. Front spindle snouts (very small, made with low grade steel - Prone to overheating, becoming brittle & snapping)
2. The front spindle/hub bearings (Small - not made for this kind of load or heat - Prone to overheating & self destructing)
3. The ball joints (Small shanks, made with low grade steel, over heat treated - Prone to snapping off)
4. The rear 1-piece flange type axle (Design not intended for high power twist & high-G side loads we put on them. Made with low grade steel - Prone to breaking flange off at bearing.)
5. Rear axle bearings (Open Roller or Ball Bearing Roller) - Never designed for the high-G side loads we put on them - Prone to disintegrating.)

They were very safe for street driving with G70-14 tires ... like they were intended. But we put modern suspensions, wide/sticky tires, hotter brakes & big HP in these these cool cars ... and the 5 areas I listed above are the weak links.

I'm not surprised they break. I'm surprised they last as well as they do. But it's like playing Russian roulette with a 24 bullet cylinder. Yes, the odds are better than a 6 bullet cylinder, but eventually it's going to bite you.

There are cheap ways to reduce your risk. And there are spendy ways to upgrade these areas where they are no longer a weak link.

While I agree 100% with all of Ron's points, the blue Mustang went off track with all parts intact. The wreck caused the balljoint to break, not the other way around. We spoke to the customer a day or so after the fact.

Carl are those stock spindles on the fastback, they don't look quite the same as mine, maybe just a later year.

Besides the BJ, how did the rest of the equipment do? And just to clarify, I'm not throwing stones or starting anything, (this time) just trying to learn.

Off track not due to component failure was my understanding. There was grass pinched in the rim that indicated to me that an impact caused the ball joint to separate.

Carl did your customer mention where he went off at?

Vince@Meanstreets

that car broke from the impact and not impact due to breakage. Hard to prepare for that. Is that Griggs equipment? they are pretty sturdy.

I agree Greg, everything needs to be stepped up several notches.

edit, sorry, missed the last page.

I can't say anything about the poor guy's incident with 100% certainty as I am not the one who spoke to him. It sucks to see but it's better to bend a fender by breaking a small part than it is to bend the frame.

Everything else is fine as far AFAIK.

The spindles appear to be stock 65-66 style.

I dunno where he went off, Sieg. I figured you were there and would be able to tell me, haha! I notice the tires aren't anything particularly sticky so there are a lot of possibilities. I could speculate but that's the same as assuming and we all know how that works out. :)

I wish I could have been there, as I would have asked him, but stuff at home required my attention.

Sorry you couldn't make, would have been nice to see you again.

The driver wasn't around so I couldn't get the good gossip. It had my curiosity because of the front impact below the bumper and the right rocker.......just couldn't figure out where that might have happened and not hit a wall too.

I remember looking at those tires and thinking they certainly didn't help and probably were the cause. :(

I have the perfect solution Greg. I'll trade you straight across either my Dale Earnhart # 3 car or my Tony Stewart # 20 car for the Mustang. You won't have to screw with all that outdated unsafe stuff that we have all been running for years and you will have big brakes, tires, dry sump, big safety cage, fire system etc.

Besides -- I STOLE the Mustang and you're never going to recover from it. And Jack Mauer will double my money when I'm ready to sell. <where's the tongue sticking out icon?>

Hey Dan,

Thanks for asking about the Falcon! It did great--I was only in the yellow group, as this was my second track day, but if it says anything, I was lapping my group members in the second run. In most of the pictures, I'm alone, even though there were something like 35 cars in each group...

They've got great pics of all of our cars at www.gotbluemilk.com--they're the track photogs, and kick butt at their jobs...

Good to hear Sieg, well not about the motor but these things happen. Looking forward to the pictures as well as Sutton and Welds plan for the car.

Rusto, how'd the lil falcon do?

It was fun to put a face and a handshake to the name! Glad you came out and had a good time! I used to run Yellow group and had a blast... Next time bring it up to Thunderhill and run the full 5 miles in October with us.

Just to reinforce the point, Carl, I've done a hard, airborne 180 into a ditch on my road (really nice, along American River) that bent steel rims (2, front and rear), tie rods, and leaf spring shackles. Other things were a bit damaged as well (see passenger side of my Falcon), but my TCP upper arms laughed at the impact. (My Global West lowers survived nicely as well.) The K772-type screw-in ball joints are used quite successfully by many racers of different stripes, with full confidence.

I wouldn't leave my house with stock '65 Mustang tie rods, however...

Here's what I've come to learn in my VERY SHORT time tracking. Some guy blows past you like you're sittin' still... and since we're all competitive -- your foot goes down - your eyes glaze over - and it's "I'm going to catch that SOB!!"

What we have to learn.... that guy might be a real veteran driver -- might have super sticky tires - might have 100 hp on ya... might have a better set up car. You have a tendency to FORGET that you're on 200 tread wear tires -- don't really have the air pressures set up right -- don't have the wheel time - and the next thing you know - you're a spinning top (if you're lucky) or going into the weeds.

After doing that a couple times --- I don't chase -- I "gauge" to see if I can run with them but within MY driving skills and limits.... If they're just running off from me -- I let 'em go.

Everybody's car is different out there... so NOTHING is even. One day I'm struggling to stay behind a f'n MIATA and I'm working hard and driving a little over my head --- and I KNOW I should catch and pass a stink'n' Miata..... then I find out it's being driven by a pro Winston Cup driver.... This dude doesn't need any power -- He knows how to roll that thing thru corners! Live and learn... Learn to just drive what you brought and how you know how to drive.

Before I go buying any Chevy engines I will find
out who was driving Dave's car. It sometimes run in
three groups. Dave only runs in blue unless he gives
Someone a ride. He did share Joe Silvas car for a few
Years and was just bringing his car back after three years

Broken parts
Was crewing on a buddies can am car for a few years
and saw suspension parts break on several cars. Tire tech
is so much better now that they tear old race cars apart

Greg is right there is always someone faster. You need to keep
your head and learn how to drive your car. It's about having
fun and bench racing later. Things can go bad real quick. I found
Viper boy and I run together real good. One day he is faster the
next it is me. We give each other a bad time but all in good fun
