That thing is a monster. I asked them what it is capable of running without traffic and they said 1:44s on race tires. That isn't fooling around!

Also, I agree with your thoughts Greg. That picture was too perfect for a snarly ass comment and i couldnt restrain myself.

It is beyond easy to get overly excited on the track and make mistakes. I'm definitely not the fastest driver out there, but I've had enough seat time and "class" time to learn how much my lap times slip when I start dive bombing corners to try and catch the guy who passed me. For us amateur Schlubs restraint is often our best friend, unfortunately it not as much fun.

I like the direction you're going with the little yellow car. The more you overbuild something, beyond the minimum, the larger window you tend to create for yourself if there is an error. That was my entire philosophy with the '06 I brought out. It's for my dad to take to open track days. It stops fast and changes directions even faster, and if you run it through the gearing properly it has some get up, not a ton compared most cars around here, but enough. His limits will be so far inside of the cars limits that if here ever gets out of shape there should be some safety margin to use up before anything happens.

Dave, the real reason the detached garage is going to cost more is because it is going to have to house a Cortex Mustang of some year.

Hes 200 lbs lighter, 200 more horsepower, and probably has some serious suspension components. Not to mention Cortex is based at Sonoma Raceway Business Park. Wheel time at their front door.

I'll take my budget racer over that money pit any day.

That place is Mare Island. The EPA put a stop to the scrapping of the ships and now what they do is bring them to Mare Island just to make them sea worthy enough to get them to Texas and then they scrap them there.
The Navy did a lot of damage to the waters in that area not to mention the surrounding land on Mare Island where they were based. Lennar Homes now owns a huge piece of the area and have put up a few housing developments there. Often during excavations for infrastructure we come across silver dirt buried below the surface. The silver dirt is lead paint that was sand blasted from the ships hulls.
I've been told that there is a lot of ammunition from the war ships that was dumped into the waters there. Story has it that war ships would be sent out on training missions and if they came back to Mare Island with any ammo left on board they would lose funding to buy more ammo so they started dumping the ammo before docking.

Thanks Skip. The car is something else in person. Doesn't stand out at all, but man it sure draws a crowd especially from people in the know. Thanks, Greg. Sorry to hear about your mechanicals, but I'm sure you'll find some very shiny solutions. I think finding out more about your Mustang was the reason I initially joined this site. If you like, I will attest to the fact that you spent a lot of time in front of a certain orange Camaro, and nobody could tell how hard you were breathing (or circulating refrigerated water across your chest).

Depending on how much the next month of my life thrashes me, I may just show up at Thunderhill in October, maybe even without any new body damage...

It was fun to put a face and a handshake to the name! Glad you came out and had a good time! I used to run Yellow group and had a blast... Frankly -- track time is track time and I don't really care what group I'm in. Apparently either does Sieg... but I digress. You car was awesome. Next time bring it up to Thunderhill and run the full 5 miles in October with us.

GregWeld

I don't do much shiny stuff -- but I do want reliability!!! I'm sick and tired of a motor that has constant issues. At least this time it happened late Sunday instead of like the last time I ran Sonoma, and it was on the first lap after a fresh rebuild! UGH. It's right after that last year that I bought the Lotus for a back up car and that worked out real well this time around. Sieg was out and I was in! LOL

The Cool Shirt was the best thing an old fat fart like me ever bought.... it was such an amazing difference in how I felt at the end of the day!! The driver suit I have to wear is too hot for the summer driving -- and I let Sieg wear the cooler summer single layer... which would be far more comfortable. I'm just too nice. LOL

The military still owns a large portion of Mare Island. Further north of the golf course there are areas that are fenced off with huge signs that say to stay off the property all around the perimeter. Rumor has it they used to do some sort of nuclear missile work and that the areas are radio active.

First session on Saturday in green group during lap 2 or 3 everybody was reminded that this is a dangerous and expensive hobby. Story is he spun in his own fluid coming out of T8. Mike in our group was a couple cars behind and said he had to catch his car coming through the section and was pretty sure something was on the track.

From what I heard the car let go then hooked up and shot left off track and moved a 7,000 pound K wall and thankfully the driver was fine. I'm guessing the speed through that section is 80-90 mph and the K wall is 50-75' off the track.

What this reinforced for me is the first session is an acclamation period for the driver and car. Pushing 9 or 10 tenths first session out isn't in anyones best interest IMO.

What's the track like today?

Are you on your game or maybe feeling slightly off?

Is the car near a 100% or was it apart prior to the event and not tested or thoroughly safety checked?

Could that fluid leak issue have been detected prior with a couple easy laps or could the crash have been prevented running the first session at 70-80%?

All speculation but worthy of consideration.......again IMO.
Hey thats my trailer in the back ground to the left of the car.. We talked to the guy and he sounded like an experienced guy, it was just one of those things that happens...

I posted in the introduction section but Ill type it out here again... Long story short my shocks ended up getting lost in shipping. I was getting them revalved. So I was about to call it quits because this is a rear coilover shock. (and it is friday night). Well I ended up stealing the penske coil over shock I was using in the front (still regular coil spring though, not using as a coil over). Had to redo the shock mounts friday night, rig up some blown 40 year old koni's for the front but we made it there. Front end was all over the place but it was great to drive the car again. Then I got home and cut the front end off

Welcome to Lat-G.

Glad that isn't your orange car, after seeing the carnage under yellow I had to inspect in person. Did you talk to the driver? Did he spin in his own fluid per the "official" story? One of our pit mates said his car got crossed up because of something on the track.

What I'm going to need is an instructor in the passenger seat if what I learned in Gran Turismo 4 doesn't work. :headscratch:

yaaaaaaa then your definitely gonna need bigger brakes.

Crap and of course I just cut my car up... I did the laguna bowl last year... Way fun! Never driven that track with my car..

If you guys go, I will definitely head out there and hang out/help. I live 20 min from the track.

Killer. I saw your car from a distance out there but never up close. Sounded great too.

If you jackasses haven't figured it out, I had to block all your numbers on my phone due to your adhd, aka, text train. If you need me, I hear pony express is still around?:D

I started getting texts from Ron Fellows & Marcos Ambrose shortly after. They are trying to talk me into coming out of retirement. I figure they would give me a run for my money. With you guys all I needed was a big old fat pig with a tko 600 and a sub woofer to wipe you up.

Signed the Pantera up for no sound issues Laguna....
need to tweak a few things on it to get ready

Just got back from Laguna and the Historic races
Kenny Epson broke a wheel on the Monza car and
hit the tire wall pretty hard.. lucky he was ok and the
car mostly just needs fiberglass work.. he went out
two races later and won the Trans Am race

Pantera took a first at our dinner on Friday night
and a first at the Italiano for modified... hope the
damn thing does not think it is a stupid show car now
Had that issue with the Firebird years past.. won a car
show then it stumbled in the next autocross and lost by
.0037 of a second.. will never forget that

Look forward to seeing whoever comes out.. I am signed
up for Blue but may go down a group a time or two so
I can run with my Viper buddy cause he has no cage

Just got a call from my buddy Joe Silva- one of the OTEC guys
to let me know about the event as he knows I have trouble
with the 92 days at Laguna...

I told him I am signed up.. he said that is good as
it will more than likely sell out early... I know they sold out
a few years back when they had the unlimited in the middle
of the winter (January) and it was $750 for the day

So if you are on the fence it would be a good idea to
pull the trigger sooner than later

Okay, so this "bunghole" signed up for Laguna Seca next month (con el Shelby Club). It'll be my first time there as a driver. What's good is that I get free rent down there, so at least I won't be doing the 100-plus mile drive thing before the event this time...

Maybe I can pull some dents beforehand...

Was looking forward to seeing the orange 69
with the fat tires. Maybe in October at thunderhill

Took my carb to the Shelby carb guy tonight
Putting in some jet extensions, tapered floats
and maybe jetting up slightly. It was time and the
fire

had me worried I might have cooked things

Rustomatic will be good to see you again. Met you when
I ran my bird at goodguys

Viper buddy was asking me what group I was in
Running blue but he can't without a cage. I don't like point
byes. Besides there are 4 or 5 other vipers running blue
I may get my ass kicked in my street car. Time will tell

Thanks Bob but try and save your car for the next Sonoma event next year if you can wait that long. Car wont be ready till then. I'll run blue group for sure. Actually got approved for blue group last event and probably should have switched.
Either way I'll probably be at the T-Hill event this year without the car just to hang out and help out if needed.

I was in the shop calculating, grinding, fitting, tack welding, measuring, cussing, cutting tack welds, recalculating, etc all while listening to my phone beep continuously. As my good friend always said......."You can snow the Snowman but you can out sh*t seasoned Bullsh*tters." :D

Hey Bob,

I do remember the Firebird--awesome car! I'm definitely looking forward to seeing your Pantera, as the Pantera is one of my all-time favorites--there should be a couple out there.

This track thing is turning into one hell of a distraction...

Trying to get one more Pantera owner to run.. my buddy Rich
with very little track time.. but you got to learn some how
Mike Drew the Pantera king-he knows everyone that has
a Pantera in the world.. will have his car there.. little time
on his car... had a brake issue a Laguna last year that is
hopefully resolved.. but has plenty of track time in his shelby clone
and other cars

Will be good to see all that can attend

I will be at Thunderhill in October... actually running with
Checkered flag (Pantera guys started that club).. will be
there Sunday and may run with Shelby... that day.. time
will tell
