My folks are looking at buying an old car out of Canada and are completely lost. It's super clean and I'd hate for my mom to miss out on "her" car because they're confused.
Anyone with some insight on the procedures and what to expect would be appreciated.

From where? I may be able to help if I can.
It's pretty easy for the most part - no real secrets to it.

Thanks James, the car is located in BC, which isn't far from my folks. I think they're more worried/concerned with having all the correct papers to get across the border.
I'm looking at the Customs and Border Patrol site now...yawn. :rules:
Clear as mud! Really it looks like a few forms from both parties and you're good, registering it may be another issue. :headscratch:

One thing that helps is to have all of the paperwork - bill of sale, etc. - notarized so that customs is satisfied with the transaction. If you pay by check, and I suggest you do, keep a copy. Other than that it should be pretty simple. My general rule of thumb is to try to have way more paperwork than you think a reasonable person can want… then double it.

Hey Dan,
If you still need some more info shoot me a PM and I can put you in touch with someone here in BC that can walk you through what documents you need.
Where in BC is the car located?

as mentioned paperwork is important...they really look into how you found the car (via internet, Ebay, and adds you had...it helps if they have a price) You will have to provide the Canadian Border the title to the car prior to crossing into the U.S.
I imported a car out of the U.S and into Canada...the U.S border required 72 hours to clear the title against any leans, theft, etc. So you would need to fax the title to the Canadian border crossing your bringing it across prior to leaving.

That's good to know and something we were wondering. My parents are close enough that they're hoping to drive up, look it over and drive it home.
I'm sure my mom would absolutely hate having to spend a few days shopping and exploring before coming home.:sarcasm_smiley:

I bought a car off my uncle last year and it required a little work, but if I can get it from Canada to Australia, should be easy for you. I remember that there was a time lag required due to Customs needing the paperwork before hand also. Couple of days, not hours. And I had to prove that the car would not be sold or kept in the US but was only travelling thru to be exported.
