I'm relatively new to the site and love it. Great info and ideas with plenty of support when needed. Our projects are a 69 Camaro and 1973 Trans Am. The 69 Camaro has an LSX454 going in w/TKO600. We chose Ridetech's suspension pieces and Rushforth Livewire wheels. A lot has gone into the car the last few years and we are a couple months away from getting it back on the road. The pic is at the GoodGuys Lonestar Spring Nationals at Texas Motor Speedway. 43412

Our 1973 Trans Am is a new project and brand new to us. It is an original white on white car w/55k miles that received the total pro touring treatment by the team at Carbon Kustoms. The car is currently at West Bend Dyno in Wisconsin getting the finishing touches before we take delivery. We are looking forward to getting this car out on the track and to a number of events in 2014. I need to get some pics loaded up.

Glad to be a part of Lateral-g!:newbie:

Here is a pic of the 69 Camaro project progress.

Pulled the 383 and removed the subframe. Found a crack in the shock mount weld. Decided to remove the subframe, fix the weld, clean it up and send it out for powder coating. Smoothing the firewall begins this week.

The LSX454 fresh out of the crate. Using LS7 intake, coils, ECM and throttle assembly. Installing a Street & Performance front drive assembly. Dynatech headers. Waiting on the intake assembly. The one I ordered from GMPP was mis boxed and did not have the fuels rails and throttle body. They are replacing it but costing me a week on engine assembly. Good news is there is plenty to do so not too worried about it.

Brian at Carr's Corvettes and Customs inverted the DSE wiper motor and mounted it under the front fender, totally hidden off the firewall.

The latest addition to our garage. We have quite a list of changes, mostly cosmetic, a few safety items and small mechanical stuff but this car is simply bad a$$! Thanks Albert! We are honored to be the new owners of you Project Warhorse.

The 1973 TA, aka Warhorse, without the Tire Bird wrap.

That blue car was a "wrap"? How cool.

I love wraps because you can change the look of the car DRAMATICALLY for modest money, compared to a paint job. Plus they are easy to make repairs from "off road excursions" on track days.

Thnks man! It is freakin sweet...and real carbon fiber. All the credit goes to Albert Melchior of Carbon Kustoms. This 73 was his creation. This car, Project Warhorse, was his test bed for the companies products.

He had the hood decal cut out so the inside of the image would have the CF hood show through. Brilliant idea. There are so many small details on this car. We cannot wait to get further along in the project, post more pics, and see it come together. :headspin:

The Trans Am was featured as a tech article in Popular Hot Rodding and Car Craft after SEMA. The car was wrapped in a Jerry Titus early 70's Trans Am Tire Bird design replica "paint" job. It showed very well and highlighted a number of sponsors parts. MSD, West Bend Dyno, BF Goodrich, Dynatech, Wegner and many others contributed to the effort.

Check out the link to read the article and see some more pics of the TA...

We received some updates on the progress of the TA today. The guys at West Bend Dyno in West Bend, WI have been hard at work to tidy up the trunk. They relocated and loomed a bunch of wiring for the fuel system and battery. Removed the cool box. Fixed the holes in the trunk floor where the ridetech coil over cannister lines go through to the shocks. The trunk was sprayed with black and aqua splatter paint. Lookin good! :D

Here is the trunk prior to relocating the wires, installing the roll bar and fixing the holes in the floor.

Coyote would be cool but thats an entire new front suspension to make room for it. Id rather slap an LS in there and save myself the headache. But for now, I've got another 347 Im going to be installing. Just have to find the time to go pick it up.

The guys at WBD are moving from the trunk to the engine bay. We decided to pull the engine on the TA to smooth the firewall, install a new wiring harness from American Autowire, relocate the wiper motor and add Vintage Air. I have to admit that Brad and his team are on it. We are overly impressed with their responsiveness and ability/willingness to keep us up to date on the progress of the TA.

Progress continues on the 69 Camaro. Compared to many threads on Lateral-g these are not all that exciting. Nonetheless, getting the Camaro back on the road is in the cross hairs. We are supposed to hear the LSX454 come to life for the first time next week. STOKED!

A couple of items got knocked off the punch list in the last few days.

Battery re-located and mounted in the trunk. Will still be able to use my trunk close out panels with no modification.
45412

This was a good find. Look at the picture of the main power wire for the stereo. Needless to say this was fixed.
45414

The headers were installed and the exhaust was trimmed and being measured for fittment of new collectors.
45415

The oil cooler adapter was machined for clearance to fix this.
45418

The motor mount has been notched to fix this.
45417

The ECM is installed and wiring is underway.
45416

Re-assembled the headlights on the new core support. Hope to get the front
clip back on next week.

Looks like you're going to end up with a far nicer car than you bought!!

I didn't go back to the beginning to read what brought all of this work on. It was a "done" car....

The paint and interior was a bit tired and worn from past shows and driving events. A lot of what is expected for a car that is driven hard and used as a track car. WBD and MSD needed to do a little more tuning research on the ATOMIC EFI set up for drivability. For the most part, the car is very well sorted. We added some additional levels of safety based upon how we plan to use the car. The roll bar, new harnesses, wiring improvements, and fire bottle would better match the intended purpose and some changes to event requirements. Plus these items give us peace of mind, or at least more peace of mind knowing that if we encounter an incident while driving the car, we improve our chances of avoiding injury. The last item we were interested in was making the car ours, but maintaining the legacy of the car Albert built. The paint scheme and graphics combined with some finishing touches to enhance the overall appearance, but not radically change it is the goal we are shooting for. I can't wait to see how you feel it turns out.

I received some updated pics of the progress on the install of the LSX454 in our 69 Camaro project. We ran into a header clearance issue with the Ridetech TruTurn bump steer bracket. We are modifying the Dynatech headers to clear the steering linkage so hopefully we will hear it for the first time next week.

Great goal, and I think it's great that you have the means to accomplish this goal. I've been enjoying watching the TA come together now that I can actually see the pictures. Good luck.

The carbon fiber hood looks terrific with a fresh coat of cameo white and new decals. The OEM decal is black in the center however the center of the bird was cut out for a unique carbon look on the trans am hood. The shaker is also carbon fiber.

The rear decklid decal is installed. The 73 decals and cameo white paint give the car an original look however, this car is far from original. :secret:

I posted this in the WTB/Wanted section as well...

I'm in a bit of a bind. The company that was supposed to transport our 1973 Trans Am from West Bend Dyno in West Bend, WI to us in Keller, TX is no longer available. It was set up a couple months ago and now no response when I try to contact him (privateer) but a note from a mutual friend that he "flaked out" and to find an alternative. So I am turning to Lateral-g for some help.

Our goal was to have the car for the USCA event at Texas Motor Speedway on March 21-23rd. The plan was the shipper was to pick the car up on March 17th at the shop in West Bend and head south to deliver the car to us on the 20th.

First off, Is anyone on the forum going to the event and have room for another car? (Slim chance is my guess but figured what the hell, doesn't hurt to ask)

Or are there any members that are in the business of shipping cars that would be interested in making a run down south to deliver the car? Please PM me as I am searching all kinds of alternatives but would prefer to "keep it in the family".

-Enclosed trailer
-Bonded/insured
-References preferred
-shipping zip codes: pick up 53090, drop off 76248

Thanks for your help and I appreciate any feedback that can be offered.

Thanks man. Appreciate the comment. It is an LS7 intake assembly and throttle body. Straight out of the GM performance parts catalog. Ordered it from Hudiburg Chevrolet in Oklahoma when I bought the engine. Call Zack in parts if you need a source. The intake tube is custom made out of 4" pipe and a K&N filter. In the pic, Brian the fabricator at the shop, mocked it up with clamps for measurements and fittment angles. I'll add pics once its done.

Jay,

Good to meet you today! I was able to look over the Camaro, and it looks great! Very nice job. Sorry I won't get to see the T/A, but maybe it will be here for the fall GG.

I hate to admit this, but I didn't realize when we were talking today that the T/A was originally Albert's. Now I understand your 'lighter' comment. :) I can't wait to see the finished car, looks like it's going to be great (I just re-read this thread for the pictures. :) ).

See you tomorrow...

Bryan, it was great meeting you as well. Really enjoyed getting to see you run TOW the past couple days. Its an awesome car. Thanks for the comments on the Camaro.

It was fun to compare notes on how to approach the track. 1st gear with a shift to 2nd on the straights made a huge difference.

I sure hope you didn't get too badly rained on. We packed up and headed out just in time as it began to rain as we exited the track.

See you tomorrow.

Jay,

As you know by now, I didn't make it back out to the track today. I discovered a problem with the car after I left yesterday (dead O2 sensor it seems), so I decided to hit the road early this morning to make sure I made it back to Austin in one piece.

Loved the Camaro, and definitely look forward to seeing the T/A once it's done! Perhaps we'll have them both there for the fall event. I'll do some work to both the car AND the driver before then. :)

Next time you make it to Austin, let me know. We'll go out and eat some REAL BBQ. :)

Bryan, thats a deal! I appreciate the comments on the Camaro. We are pretty anxious to get the TA. It will definitely be at the fall event. I too will be working on the car AND especially the driver.

Hey Jay. Thanks for the ride yesterday. That 454 is a beast. I look forward to seeing the Firebird next weekend.

Absolutely man! Anytime. I need to get some more seat time to keep up with you. :RunninDog: I hope you get the Maverick back on the road soon. That car is a blast to watch on the track and ride in with ya! Unfortunately the TA will not be at this weekends event. A few parts did not make it in time so we could get it transported to us for the event this weekend from Wisconsin. Probably gonna miss it by a couple weeks now. Oh well...we will get it out soon! Definitely this fall!!

BTW, we are planning an auto-x day for us North Texan's soon. There are a few of us in the North Texas Camaro Club that want to go work on our skills and the boys at Equipe Rapide will put on an event for us if we can get enough cars out there and pick a date. We are inviting all cars and makes so no need to be a Camaro guy to participate.

In addition, we are looking to get out to Eagles Canyon soon. Plano Ford is sponsoring a track day there in May and March 29th is an open session on the Eagles Canyon website a group of us are considering.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll send you the details once we get it all figured out. Hell, if any Lateral-g members in the DFW area are interested, let me know if you want to participate (targeting $100-200 for the registration fee). If we get more cars, a few of us may sponsor the event.

Hope to see you out amongst the cones soon Chris!

Well we are not going to get the TA completed in time for the Texas USCA event. It's not for lack of trying. The West Bend Dyno guys have been working their arse's off on the car to get it finished. Hopefully we can get it out to another event soon. I'm trying to talk the wife into Daytona. Brad sent me some pretty cool updates to share.

The splitter was designed by WBD and came out great. Here's a couple pics prior to install and the finished product installed on the car.

We asked for a radiator close out panel and fender braces. The guys at WBD over delivered! They designed a great compliment to the carbon fiber inner fender wells, paying homage to the origins of the car and Albert's work from Carbon Kustoms.
46750
46751

We got the exhaust back from Jet Hot. They ceramic coated it in a high polished finish and it turned out terrific. The car actually fired Monday for the 1st time since being disassembled upon returning to West Bend after SEMA. Hope to have it on the rollers for a tune on Friday.

Thanks man! The car ran great these past two weekends between GoodGuys and the USCA event at Texas Motor Speedway.

Check out these stats for the 37 registered cars at the USCA event...on the speed/stop challenge the event logged 740 laps. Heck I think I ran around 40 myself. On the auto-x there was 1264 laps run or 33 laps per participant. Today we ran 2100 laps on the road course and a few of us had mechanicals or just flat got wore out. There was only one car, Cheryl Herrick in her Jet Hot Nova in the final Advanced class that ran for a 12 minute session all alone. She had an instructor and was hitting the rev limiter going faster and faster. For me, this was an event like none other as far as testing car and driver ability. I give the sponsors (Optima, BFG, DSE, Ridetech, Jet Hot, Snap-On, etc.) and Jimi Day and his team/partners a major round of applause. It was safe, educational and very fun.

Here is a pretty cool pic of my Camaro on the road course. My day did end early when I lost a rear axle seal but I had a blast. Limped it home without incident and now am thinking what to do next. I'd love to install a 9" full floater. Hmm...Daytona is not far off on the schedule!

I love TOW, I really do. But there's something about that splitter and stance that looks really awesome! I'd love to see some shots of the bottom to get a feel for the clearance you have. I don't remember, but were the rear floors raised to better fit the mufflers? Those are my low spot now, but thankfully I haven't scraped those yet!

Can't wait to get these two side by side... :)

Thanks man! It sits very low but love that stance is right! No mods were made to the rear floors. It was mini-tubbed but no other modifications. I will take some pics for when we get the car back to TX.

It's been a work in progress for a little over 5 years. Hind sight being 20/20, I should have done the LS swap and Ridetech suspension a long time ago. Heck, I probably could have had a third PT car or auto-x truck (really wanted the No Limits 55 F100 that was for sale last summer but wifey said "NO") and a garage built for them all with all the money spent on iterations of this car! HA! Now as Ron says, I need to enjoy it. Oh and by the way, work on the driver! More seat time. More learning and more events.

Been off the grid a bit and appreciate the "nudge" Skip.

The TA has been going through shakedown runs and we have encountered a couple issues and making a few more changes. Clutch is being changed from mechanical to hydraulic. We had to re-route some oil lines and fittings that worked loose and were sitting against the headers. The old DSE steering rack started leaking all over out of just about every line. We just replaced it instead of rebuilding. We are adding a parking brake to pass safety inspection in order to get the car registered. The power window motors had to be pulled, cleaned and re-assembled to get the windows to go up and down. Nuisance stuff for the most part.

Now the two bigger issues we are dealing with.
The Atomic EFI has a tuning issue at low RPM so working with MSD for an update to resolve the stumble off the line and low RPM's. Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this when running a 4 barrel throttle body on an LS. MSD told us a fix is coming next month and it could be a good tech article for the system. Until then we are driving through it.

The Dynatech headers are no longer. They were way too low and scraped on everything. We chose to go with Ultimate Headers swept short/mid length headers. We are tucking the exhaust way up to get more ground clearance. They over-promised on delivery so what was supposed to be less than a week has turned into 3 weeks.

The good news is my wife Amy auto-crossed the car at her first event and took third in her class out of 17cars. I will post some pics.

My wife and I have decided to move on from our 1969 Camaro and 1973 Trans Am. We want to go in a different direction. Looking at a Z06 or Z28 and want to invest in expanding my consulting business.

I simply don't have the time necessary to manage the car projects anymore. We are going to be putting our cars up for sale, buy a newer car to stay connected to the PT community that will require less time committment while we build out the business. It's bittersweet but we believe there will always be an opportunity to jump back in for us down the road.

I'll be putting the cars in the for sale section soon once we get all the appropriate spec information and pics to post on the site but I wanted to raise the flag to the lateral-g community we are moving on from our 1973 Trans Am and 1969 Camaro. If you have interest and want t learn more, please connect with me but I'll have them on the for sale page before long.

Jay,

It's a tough decision but it's a smart one. I love both of the cars you built and it was fun watching you build them. Good luck with the sales on both of these which shouldn't be a problem.

As for picking between the z06 and the z28 you might want to consider a 2014 or 2014 Camaro with the 1le track package. Incredible car for the money and you still have the creature comforts that the z28 does not have since it's more of a race car.

With the 1le you can drive it everyday and still have a beast at the track. Jump on over to the Camaro5.com forum and you will be impressed with what the guys at GM have done with the car.

I've converted my 2010 using some of the 1le parts and what a difference. It was comfortable enough to drive 1300 miles on the power tour and even drive both my girls to school. Best bang for the buck is the 1le for $40 grand brand new.

Stock 1LE puts down a blistering 1:54.628 at Fontana.

Guys, appreciate the feedback. It's a tough decision as we LOVE our cars. Marty, your suggestion of a 1LE is a good one. In fact, the more I look, a 2014 Z51 2LT is leading the list for us at this time. We drove it at Bondurant in March and got hooked. It has become the comparison car for everything we look at, including the TA and Camaro.

We don't see the cars going anywhere soon so we will continue to enjoy them until the right buyer comes along.

I was on the autocross friday, and i remember Bryan sayin that you had to go to "Autozone?" to replace it. I wanted to say, "drove 2400 miles, autocrossed it, then drove 1600 home". Well I did, but she limped home. I hope to do the trip again next year....I had to leave the autocross early cause the Goodguys wanted to get a cover shot of all of us "tour" people on the Gazette, they did it on the banks of the speedway, it was pretty cool.

Unfortunatly Hooker middies. I am not happy AT ALL with Hooker, and this problem has led to bigger issues. The reason i am stuck using the Hooker's is when i bought the LS kit, it moved the engine over 1/2". Plus Keith at Custom Works is stepping up for Hooker and kickin me down a set. Hooker sent me a better fitting set, but just painted and i need coated.....I did make the show saturday, thats when i hung with Bryan and met Amy....took off on Sun. THIS IS NOT MY CAR (looks like it) but it sure pains me to imagine what the owner is going through right now.

A friend in our local North Texas Camaro club sent this picture out from his shop. Apparently a driver pulled out in front of this 69 Camaro and it was totaled. The car was only on the road for 3 days since being finished. It was a sweet build. LSA, DSE goodies custom interior. It was immaculate. The driver was injured with broken bones and bruises but is recovering. Really crappy story for a guy that put a bunch of time and money into this car.

http://i1372.photobucket.com/albums/ag340/Jdeluca/20B0A465-32ED-4BAF-BA5E-D6A7341889E3_zpsoguwyokw.jpg (http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/Jdeluca/media/20B0A465-32ED-4BAF-BA5E-D6A7341889E3_zpsoguwyokw.jpg.html)

I do give credit to the owner. He is looking to start over with another 69 so if you have a lead on a good 69 Camaro body, DSE or Roadster Shop chassis, let me know and I can connect you with the owner/builder.

It does kind of look like a boat hit it now that you mention it. He ended up hitting a pole. Not sure how it all went down, losing control, swerving to avoid a head on, not exactly sure but makes my stomach hurt just looking at the pics. I totally agree with your comment Chris.

Bryan, it was not anyone you would have met. The car was not done yet. It took 6 months to build. They installed an LSA, had a full frame with some DSE parts, brand new paint job, new interior and a bunch of other updates. It was only on the road 3 days! I would be in jail if this would have happened to one of my cars. I too hope he and the guy that caused it have good insurance coverages. Not going to be cheap to repair.

Been a while since we have given an update. Besides driving the Trans Am and now deciding to sell the Camaro, we sent the TA back to Dusold Designs for more aesthetic work.

We decided to redo the wheel flares and fix a few small dents on the lower part of the passenger door. The dents resulted from hitting the timing gear at a local autocross during a spin out at an event last May. We have not been happy with the fit of the flares since we got the car back together so we decided to have brackets fabricated to mount the carbon fiber flares, eliminate the welting and form fit them to the fenders. They will retain a seam as original but we are going to modify the flare to fit snug to the fender. We are respraying them cameo white and adding 3m protective film. We are excited to have this done. It has been a sore subject for Amy aesthetically. I will post some pics once we get the updates from the shop.

In addition, we are having the window trim removed, restored, new clips and them polished for a cleaner look.

As it relates to suspension, we are going to change the spring rate on the rear shocks from 225's to 400's. This will make the rear end more predictable and reduce the loading from side to side we experience. We have never liked the "feel" of the rear of the car. Always felt loose and wallowy when driven aggressively. It will require some dial in time with the triple adjustables but we have a number of events coming up starting in March to get it sorted.

Look for pics soon.

I take it both of you will be driving this one after the sale of the 69? Or will you be upgrading to a Maverick? LOL

The Trans Am will be doing double duty. I talked Amy into letting me drive. We will see how long that lasts! HA!

Greg, no kidding. Not sure the "3M protect-o-bag" will pass inspection tho at the USCA event to keep the rocks off the new paint during the road rally segment.

The flares are from Carbon Kustoms. We are modifying them to follow the contour of the fenders.

The flares needed to be modified because the fenders are carbon fiber wide body to accommodate the 335 tires. They just never fit "right".

That is my plan as well - going square front and rear. Looks like I won't find something. I've started building a prototype now - will probably use a 67-72 C10 front inner fender grafted to a Camaro outer with a wide lip flare.

My IRS is 64" WMS to WMS so we're plenty wide, with 12" from the front of the hub to the inner tub wall.

Did Carbon Kustoms make the wide body fenders too? My front is currently 61" but I think I can go out a bit more.

It would be nice to not have to make my own. I'd prefer to put those 100+ hours some where else.

Yes, Albert from Carbon Kustoms has the fenders available. We purchased the car from him last year. Give him a call. He is a plethora of knowledge on the 2nd Gen f-body's and will definitely help you out. His white 2nd gen camaro has wide body rear fenders as well. Dude really knows his cars.

Frame rail failure where the bracket mounts ?

Yes...on one side the frame rail split where bracket mounts (welded not bolted in) and on the other side the Airbar separated from the UCA mount plate.

Similar to this I assume.

Before we installed mine I spoke with my chassis guy and he suggested a few stitch welds. He felt the full weld was the cause of the failure.

And also the obvious fact that the rail was never designed to carry such a load.

Vince@Meanstreets

yeah, when welding them in you want to avoid the corner of the frame rail. I use the bolts and then run a few 1" beads on the flats only.

Been a few months since an update. KLRBRD is a completely different vehicle with the new suspension. The guys at Dusold Designs did an incredible job. I drove it for the first time on Sunday since Mike delivered it to Amy at the Optima Search for the Ultimate Streetcar event at Texas Motor Speedway at the end of March. Thanks to Kaleb Kelley for taking some kicka$$ pics of the car during the event and for the guys at ProTouring Magazine for putting a pic of the car in the Premiere issue.

Damn! It has been over a year since my last post. We moved from Dallas, Texas to Columbus, Ohio. My wife quit her job and started/built a bakery...Nothing Bundt Cakes Columbus-Gahanna. My consulting business was relocated to Columbus. We built a house. (STOOPID!!) And through it all we remained married and look back on the transition and laugh as we drink some wine for sanity sake.

This past weekend we attended the Columbus GoodGuys event. I grew up in Columbus and use to go to the show as a kid. This was the first time I had taken a car to "The Big One" and man was it a BLAST. We ran some autocross, saw some awesome builds and reconnected with a bunch of old friends, making some new ones in the process. Here are some pics and videos of KLRBRD from the weekend.

A few videos from the Columbus GoodGuys autocross this past weekend.

This is the first time we had the car on any type of track since last March and the first time I have drive the Trans Am at an event. I finished up 16th out of 52 Street Machine participants. Not bad and not good but the fun factor was a 200 on a a scale of 0 to 100. Amy and I had a blast! Special thanks to Mike Dusold from Dusold Designs for helping me knock the rust off my driving skills and encouraging me to "Go Faster!".

Kind of a weird question, but is your dash board white? I am building a 69 Trans Am clone and I painted the 10-point cage and the dash white. I'm wondering if the top of the dash being white will cause windshield glare when driving?

Dash is satin black. Interesting question. I have never had a car with a white dash so have no clue whether it would cause glare.
